BJP accuses Trinamool of ‘booth jam, rigging' in Kaliganj bypoll; voting continues amidst rain
In West Bengal's Kaliganj, one of the five Assembly Constituencies across the country, which went to bye-election on Thursday (June 19, 2025), allegations flew thick and fast.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ashish Ghosh, alleged that polling officials deliberately marked with ink on his middle finger instead of the customary index finger. 'This was done in a pre-planned manner. Initially, they did not put ink on my finger. Then they did, after I went back for it. But before I could say anything, they put the ink on my middle finger. This was premeditated,' Mr. Ghosh alleged after he cast his vote in a booth at Debgram in Kaliganj.
The bye-election to the Kaliganj seat in Nadia district was necessitated after the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2. The seat saw a three-pronged contest with Mr. Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as the Trinamool candidate, Ashish Ghosh for the BJP, and Kalbiluddin Sheikh of the Congress, who fought in alliance with the Left front, in the fray.
On Thursday (June 19, 2025), the BJP accused the Trinamool of 'booth capturing' at multiple places in Kaliganj. 'The Trinamool did not allow our polling agents in two booths. I have informed the Election Commission. Booth jam and rigging are part of the Trinamool's culture,' Mr. Ghosh said.
However, the Trinamool candidate, Ms. Ahmed, denied such allegations and said the opposition parties do not have 'organisational strength in Kaliganj' and should focus on 'working for the people' instead.
Rain mars polling
Voting continued on Thursday (June 19, 2025) amidst pouring rain in the constituency.
'I am confident that the people of Kaliganj will stand by our side… However, we are fighting not just against two political entities today but also the adverse weather conditions. It has been raining heavily since morning,' Ms. Ahmed said.
While there were no reports of violence, many local people alleged that they could not arrive at their polling booths due to lack of transport, including ferry boats.
As of 5 p.m., Election Commission officials pegged the turnout in Kaliganj at nearly 70%. The number is expected to increase as the voting closes.
Kaliganj has 2,52,670 electors in total, according to the revised electoral list published by the Election Commission on May 5. A total of 14 companies of central forces had been deployed in the constituency for the bypoll.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari took to social media to accuse the Trinamool Congress of displaying 'regional bias' and an 'anti-Gujarati mindset' in its letter to the Chief Election Commissioner dated June 18, 2025, regarding the selection of a Gujarat-based webcasting agency for polling in the Kaliganj constituency.

Uddhav Thackeray attacks BJP; Eknath Shinde hits back, accuses him of ‘abandoning' Hindutva
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday accused the BJP of attempting to derail a potential alliance between his party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray. The remarks drew a sharp response from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who hit back by accusing Uddhav of 'abandoning' Hindutva. Uddhav was speaking at his party's 59th foundation day rally in Mumbai and used one of his frequent barbs, referring to the Shinde-led faction as 'gaddars' (traitors) for breaking away from him three years ago and aligning with the BJP. Both Uddhav and Shinde held separate rallies to mark the Shiv Sena's foundation day, which was established by Uddhav's father Bal Thackeray in 1966, news agency PTI reported. The Shinde-led Sena celebrated at NSCI Dome in Worli, while the UBT faction gathered at Shanmukhananda Hall in Sion. Uddhav alleged that behind-the-scenes efforts were underway to block unity among 'Marathi parties,' saying that meetings were being held at hotels—an apparent reference to Raj Thackeray's recent interaction with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. "What people want will happen. We will see how it is to be done. The BJP and Shinde Sena do not want Marathi parties to unite. If you try to finish the Thackeray brand, we will finish off the BJP,' Uddhav said. Uddhav Thackeray said that any attempts to impose Hindi in the state would be strongly opposed. 'The imposition of Hindi in the state will not be allowed at any cost. The BJP wants to create a divide among Marathi and Hindi-speakers on the eve of civic polls,' he said, expressing confidence that his party would retain control of Mumbai's civic body. Criticising the BJP-led Mahayuti's poll manifesto, which included promises such as monthly assistance of ₹2,100 for women under the Laadki Bahin scheme and loan waivers for farmers, Thackeray said the BJP had failed to deliver on those commitments after the assembly polls. He also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging inconsistency in his stance towards the opposition. 'When the opposition contested the Lok Sabha polls by forming the INDIA group, PM Narendra Modi compared the opposition bloc to the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen,' Thackeray said, adding, 'after Operation Sindoor, Modi sent MPs of the same opposition bloc all over the world to present India's stand.' Thackeray further alleged hypocrisy in the BJP's anti-corruption stand. 'The BJP maligns opposition leaders with corruption charges, and then inducts them into the party,' he said. He urged BJP loyalists to speak out against this trend: 'If 'original' BJP workers have any self-respect, they should oppose the entry of people, whom they had accused of corruption in the past, in their party.' Responding to Uddhav Thackeray's criticism, Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde accused him of being power-hungry and said that's why he was now seeking an alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shinde asserted that his faction continues to operate according to the ideology of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Shinde also pointed out that in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, the UBT faction failed to secure even one-third of the votes that his Shiv Sena received. 'Whatever votes they got was because of the Congress as the real Shiv Sena voters have bid them good bye,' he said. He further said, 'Balasaheb Thackeray opposed Congress, but those desperate for power aligned with that party as they are desperate for power. UBT has betrayed the Marathi people, Shiv Sena voters and have abandoned Hindutva.' Shinde didn't hold back on his personal attacks, saying, 'I have never seen a betrayer like Uddhav Thackeray who changes colours like a chameleon.' He reaffirmed his commitment to Hindutva, saying, 'I will never compromise on Hindutva for power.' Challenging Thackeray's political alliances, Shinde asked, 'Why do you hesitate to call Balasaheb as Hindu Hriday Samrat? You join hands with those who abuse Modi and (Amit) Shah who fulfilled Balasaheb's dream of Ram temple and abolishing Article 370. Why do you sit with those who abuse Savarkar and Hindu religion?' Shinde also accused Thackeray of harming national interests: 'Are you Indian or are you a Pakistani agent? Pakistan uses your statements against India,' he said, directly addressing Thackeray. He took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as well, saying, 'Rahul Gandhi has become a hero in Pakistan but is a zero in India.' Mocking the UBT faction's claim to Shiv Sena's legacy, Shinde said, 'How can a group formed on October 10, 2022, celebrate the Shiv Sena's 59th foundation day?'

Opposition criticises Jammu and Kashmir government for ‘dragging its feet' on quota revamp
The Jammu and Kashmir Government is dragging its feet on finalising a report on the rationalisation of reservation categories in the Union Territory (UT), which is being studied by a Cabinet sub-committee. The committee, in turn, submitted it to the Law Department for legal vetting months ago, and it has been bogged down since. Several opposition parties have expressed dismay and demanded that the Cabinet report be made public. J&K's reservation quota was revised under Central rule after new categories like Paharis, Paddari Tribe, Koli, and Gadda Brahmin, etc., were included in 2024. The open merit category was reduced significantly, to less than 40%. The ruling National Conference (NC), which promised to rationalise the quota, constituted a Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC), which was to file its report in six months. However, no final decision was taken on the rationalisation and no deadline was set for the Law Department, evoking sharp reactions from Opposition parties and open merit aspirants. 'Despite the six-month deadline, the Cabinet has neither offered clarity nor transparency on the report, only vague assertions and now a reported referral to the Law Department. This ambiguity is not just disappointing but also damaging,' Engineer Ehtisham Khan, a student rights activist, told The Hindu. Aspirants in the dark He accused the NC Government of 'keeping the open merit aspirants in the dark yet again.' Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and MLA Waheed-ur-Rehmaan Parra said the Cabinet move has left 'thousands of students heartbroken and disillusioned.' 'This is a deliberate denial of justice. These students have already endured violence, lockdowns, and lost opportunities. Now, as they seek fair representation and rationalised reservation, the government is pushing them further to the margins,' Mr. Parra said. He said the NC Government has the power to strike down the BJP-imposed policy with a single administrative order. NC insincere 'But the party that promised to reverse the BJP's damage is now complicit in continuing it. If the Kashmiri youth are not offered hope, it will only empower subversive elements, further destabilising a generation and their future. Rationalisation of reservation and proportional representation represents the only fair path forward, and it must be implemented without further delay,' Mr. Parra said. He demanded that the government make the report public. J&K Peoples Conference chief and MLA Sajad Lone accused the Abdullah Government of being 'clueless on reservations.' 'It has no intention of doing anything. Now, coming to this draft proposal. To the best of my knowledge, anything sent to the Cabinet should be vetted by the Law Department. It is not the other way around. It looks like another round of time-wasting tactics,' Mr. Lone said. J&K Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari asked the government to set a timeline for addressing the reservation issue. 'Whether the government focus is on revising the CSC report or obtaining legal vetting, it is essential that a clear and fixed timeline be established,' Mr. Bukhari said. He called for 'a judicious reservation policy.' 'One thing is clear beyond a doubt that the current reservation policy is highly flawed and injudicious. There is broad consensus that we require a more judicious reservation policy to protect merit,' Mr. Bukhari said.
