Cybercriminals exploit Indo-Pak tension to steal data: Bengaluru police chief

Hindustan Times12-05-2025

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police have warned the public about cyber fraudsters using the India-Pakistan conflict situation to spread malicious content and steal personal data.
Police commissioner B Dayananda, in a video advisory, said that cybercriminals are capitalising on the public's curiosity about the Indo-Pak conflict by circulating fake news and phishing links that can compromise both personal and financial information.
'These criminals take advantage of your curiosity to deceive you into dangerous situations,' Dayananda said, urging the public to stay alert and avoid falling for frauds disguised as news or updates related to the ongoing conflict.
According to the police, common cyber threats include messages claiming to offer leaked videos or exclusive insights into military operations. These often lead unsuspecting users to fraudulent websites or trigger malware downloads that can harvest sensitive data from personal devices.
The advisory highlighted specific file names and messages that should raise red flags, such as 'Army job application', 'Dance of the Hillary', and 'Executive file tasksche.exe'. These have been identified as classic phishing tools designed to lure victims into revealing personal information or infect their devices.
In response to the rising threat, the police have issued a list of safety measures for social media and WhatsApp users. The public is urged to avoid opening unknown files—even if sent by known contacts—and to refrain from forwarding suspicious content. Additionally, users are advised to only install apps from verified online stores and to steer clear of links claiming to show breaking news or videos related to the conflict. 'Report and exit suspicious WhatsApp groups immediately,' the advisory said, underscoring the need for community vigilance.
Dayananda also recommended disabling auto-download features on WhatsApp and activating two-step verification to bolster account security. He stressed the importance of being cautious with emails from unfamiliar sources, especially those using urgent language tied to the conflict.
People should avoid clicking on unsolicited links or downloading attachments, even if the emails appear to be from trusted organisations. Scammers frequently impersonate legitimate sources in phishing emails, so users are encouraged to verify email addresses closely.
For broader cyber protection, the public is urged to enable two-factor authentication, maintain updated antivirus software, and routinely back up important data. Messages promising sensational content should be treated with suspicion, as they may be fronts for fake news or malware attacks.

Former CM Vijay Rupani becomes second Chief Minister from Gujarat to die in plane crash

Air India Plane Crash: In a devastating aviation tragedy on June 12, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. Among those dead was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was travelling to London to meet his daughter. The London-bound flight AI171 lost altitude just minutes into its ascent and crashed into a residential building near the airport, sparking a massive fire and widespread panic. The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner confirmed the recovery of 204 bodies, with many more injured admitted to hospitals. Vijay Rupani's death places him among a tragic list of Indian Chief Ministers who have lost their lives in air accidents. He is the second former Gujarat Chief Minister to die in such a disaster, joining Congress leader Balwantrai Mehta, the state's second Chief Minister, whose plane was shot down during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Balwantrai Mehta's aircraft was attacked by a Pakistani Air Force pilot, killing him, his wife, three staff members, two crew, and a journalist. Other notable Chief Ministers who died in air crashes include YS Rajasekhara Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, who perished in a helicopter crash in 2009 due to bad weather and mechanical failure, and Dorjee Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh, who died in a helicopter crash in 2011 amid challenging terrain and weather conditions. Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 pm with 242 people onboard, including nationals from India, the UK, Canada, and Portugal. Just minutes after takeoff, the Air India plane lost altitude and crashed into a doctor's hostel building in the Meghani Nagar area, near the Ahmedabad airport perimeter. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is considered one of the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft in service, with a strong safety record and no previous fatal accidents. Boeing has stated it is cooperating fully with investigators. The aircraft involved had an average flight time of over 41,000 hours. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the black box recovered to provide crucial data. Died in September 1965 when his plane was shot down by the Pakistani Air Force during the Indo-Pak war, killing all onboard including his wife and staff. Died in a helicopter crash in 2009 due to mechanical failure and bad weather while flying over dense forest terrain. All onboard perished. Lost his life in a helicopter crash in 2011 during adverse weather conditions in the mountainous region of Arunachal Pradesh.

India foiled 2L cyber-attacks on Power infrastructure in the recent Indo-Pak conflict: Union Minister Khattar

Srinagar, June 12 (UNI) Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday said that India successfully thwarted nearly two lakh cyber attacks targeting its power infrastructure during the recent Indo-Pak conflict. Addressing a press conference marking the completion of 11 years of the Narendra Modi government, Khattar said, "Cyber security is now the biggest threat facing not only India but the entire world." He said that there was growing frequency of cyber attacks and cyber crimes. "A significant amount of work has been done in this domain. Today, our cyber security systems are robust enough to counter such threats effectively," he said Khattar revealed that a wave of cyber attacks was launched against Indian Power infrastructure following the commencement of Operation Sindoor—an offensive targeting terror camps across the border. "Specifically in the power sector, around two lakh cyber attack attempts were recorded. However, our cyber security teams neutralized each one of them, ensuring that no damage was caused anywhere in the country," he said. Highlighting the capabilities of Indian scientists and security experts, the Union Minister remarked that the nation now possesses the expertise to defend against such sophisticated threats, which, he warned, can originate from any part of the world. Touching upon developments in Jammu and Kashmir, Khattar added, "Following the abrogation of Article 370, there is now a growing sense of unity. The people of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the rest of the country, increasingly believe they are one nation." UNI MJR GNK
