Cybercriminals exploit Indo-Pak tension to steal data: Bengaluru police chief

Hindustan Times12-05-2025

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police have warned the public about cyber fraudsters using the India-Pakistan conflict situation to spread malicious content and steal personal data.
Police commissioner B Dayananda, in a video advisory, said that cybercriminals are capitalising on the public's curiosity about the Indo-Pak conflict by circulating fake news and phishing links that can compromise both personal and financial information.
'These criminals take advantage of your curiosity to deceive you into dangerous situations,' Dayananda said, urging the public to stay alert and avoid falling for frauds disguised as news or updates related to the ongoing conflict.
According to the police, common cyber threats include messages claiming to offer leaked videos or exclusive insights into military operations. These often lead unsuspecting users to fraudulent websites or trigger malware downloads that can harvest sensitive data from personal devices.
The advisory highlighted specific file names and messages that should raise red flags, such as 'Army job application', 'Dance of the Hillary', and 'Executive file tasksche.exe'. These have been identified as classic phishing tools designed to lure victims into revealing personal information or infect their devices.
In response to the rising threat, the police have issued a list of safety measures for social media and WhatsApp users. The public is urged to avoid opening unknown files—even if sent by known contacts—and to refrain from forwarding suspicious content. Additionally, users are advised to only install apps from verified online stores and to steer clear of links claiming to show breaking news or videos related to the conflict. 'Report and exit suspicious WhatsApp groups immediately,' the advisory said, underscoring the need for community vigilance.
Dayananda also recommended disabling auto-download features on WhatsApp and activating two-step verification to bolster account security. He stressed the importance of being cautious with emails from unfamiliar sources, especially those using urgent language tied to the conflict.
People should avoid clicking on unsolicited links or downloading attachments, even if the emails appear to be from trusted organisations. Scammers frequently impersonate legitimate sources in phishing emails, so users are encouraged to verify email addresses closely.
For broader cyber protection, the public is urged to enable two-factor authentication, maintain updated antivirus software, and routinely back up important data. Messages promising sensational content should be treated with suspicion, as they may be fronts for fake news or malware attacks.

Indo-Canadian groups support the visit of Indian PM to the G7 leaders' summit

Toronto: While pro-Khalistan elements campaigned over the weekend against the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 leaders' summit being hosted by Canada this month, several Indo-Canadians groups have supported the invitation and stressed that anti-India protesters may be loud but they comprise a fraction of the community. Among those supporting the initiative of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to invite his Indian counterpart of the summit in Kananaskis in Alberta in mid-June was Radio India managing director Maninder Gill. He said, 'We have received a lot of calls from our listeners at Radio India welcoming PM Modi's visit to Canada. I congratulate PM Carney for putting Canada first, diaspora politics cannot guide Canada's foreign policy. Fringe sectarian groups cannot hold the India-Canada relationship as hostage.' Gill, who also leads the Friends of Canada and India Foundation, had written to Carney earlier asking the PM to invite Modi and received an acknowledgement from the prime minister's office stating the concerns he had raised had been 'carefully read' and that the remarks had been forwarded to Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand for 'her information and consideration'. 'Those opposing PM Modi's visit to Canada do not represent the entire Sikh community, the membership of these groups limited to couple of hundred people in a 2 million strong diaspora,' Gill asserted. The Hindu Canadian Foundation also praised Carney, saying the PM was 'demonstrating strong leadership by staying true to his commitment to put Canada first. He remains steadfast in his vision, focusing on what truly benefits Canadians without yielding to external pressures'. In a post on X, Canada India Foundation chair Ritesh Malik said Carney 'did the right thing for us Canadians' by inviting Modi. 'Only people who don't like this is shallow minded, selfish, self-centred who pretend to be Canadians & work on their hateful agenda,' he added. But opponents of the invite made their presence felt over the weekend during protests in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area. On display were tableaux depicting Indian leaders behind bars for the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey on June 18, 2023. The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice has planned a 'convoy' to the G7 to protest Modi's presence there, and given a call to 'Ambush Modi's Politics' for 48 hours on June 16 and June 17. The leaders' summit is scheduled for June 15-17 and the venue adjoins the city of Calgary.

BrahMos: CPI asks Rajnath Singh not to delink BATL from BAPL

Thiruvananthapuram, June 9 (UNI) CPI Kerala Secretary Binoy Viswam has urged Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to reconsider the decision to delink the BrahMos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited (BATL) from the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL), a Joint Venture (JV) of India and Russia. Former Rajya Sabha member Binoy Viswam, who is also President of BrahMos Employees Union (AlTUC), said the BAPL Board has taken a decision to delink BATL from the management control of BAPL as a subsidiary unit. The Communist Party of India (CPI) leader sought the Centre to take appropriate action to retain BATL with BAPL or make BATL an entity under the DRDO. Any other decision in this regard may badly affect the growth of BATL as a prestigious organisation in Kerala, he claimed. He said the Kerala High-Tech Industries (KELTEC), a public sector undertaking of the Kerala state, was handed over to DRDO by the Kerala government in March 2007, envisioning its development. An asset worth 300 crore, including 17.8 acres of land, a modern plant, and machinery, was transferred to the central government for just one rupee (free of cost), he said. Since DRDO is a research and development organisation, it faced difficulties in direct takeover, prompting the then defence minister to take necessary actions for the transfer of KELTEC to BAPL, which operates under DRDO; thus, KELTEC was handed over to the Indo-Russian joint venture BAPL by the state government in November 2007, he explained. On January 1, 2008, the BrahMos Thiruvananthapuram company was restructured into a subsidiary called BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited (BATL) by the order of BAPL Headquarters, Delhi. Currently the BATL executes BrahMos, DRDO, ISRO, and BARC works in Thiruvananthapuram. BATL is now executing important and very complicated components of BrahMos missiles like BrahMos metallic air components, the gas generator control panel system (GG-CPS), the B1-BIl booster, F3 CKD-SKD for land and air versions, containers for launching, corset logistics for land and air packed containers, etc. The organisation has been profitable for the last 11 years and made a profit of Rs 24 crore in the financial year 2024-25. It is understood from employees of BATL that on May 20, 2025, the BAPL Board and AGM have taken a decision to delink BATL from the management control of BAPL as a subsidiary unit. "Hence, I request you to investigate this matter and also take appropriate action to retain BATL with BAPL or make BATL an entity under DRDO," the CPI leader said in a letter to Rajnath Singh.
