Indigo flight makes 8,500 ft/min drop after Pak refusal
The incident of the aircraft encountering turbulence is being probed by the DGCA.
On Wednesday, IndiGo's A321 neo aircraft operating flight 6E 2142 encountered hailstorm and severe turbulence near Pathankot. "As per crew statement, they requested Northern control (IAF) for deviation towards left (International Border) due to weather on the route, however, it was not approved. "Later, the crew contacted Lahore to enter into their airspace to avoid the weather but the same was refused too," DGCA said.
The DGCA statement confirms the report of May 22 that the Lahore ATC had rejected the flight pilot's request to use the Pakistan airspace to avoid turbulence. Indian Air Force (IAF) sources said the Northern Area Control advised the IndiGo crew within the frame of the NOTAM, ensuring safety of aircraft and passengers.
Pakistan civil aviation authorities have issued the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) shutting the country's airspace for Indian aircraft. The sources said the IndiGo aircraft was immediately assisted in co-ordinating their route diversion by contacting Delhi Area and passing requisite contact frequencies of Lahore control for overflight weather diversion request.
Once Lahore refused overflight clearance, and the aircraft proceeded towards Srinagar, the flight was subsequently professionally assisted till a safe-landing at Srinagar airfield by giving control vectors and groundspeed readouts, the sources said.
According to the DGCA, the IndiGo flight crew initially attempted to return but as they were close to the thunderstorm cloud, they decided to penetrate the weather. "Subsequently, they encountered hailstorm and severe turbulence. Crew chose to continue at the same heading to exit the weather by the shortest route towards Srinagar," the statement said.
While in a thunderstorm cloud, the regulator said warnings of Angle of Attack fault, Alternate Law protection lost, backup Speed scale unreliable were triggered. "Due to updraft and downdraft encountered by the aircraft the Autopilot tripped and aircraft speed had wide variations. As a result, Maximum Operating Speed/Maximum operating Mach (VMO/MMO) warnings and repeated stall warnings were triggered," the statement said.
During this period, DGCA said the aircraft rate of descent reached 8,500 fpm (feet per minute) and crew flew the aircraft manually till they exited the hailstorm. "After carrying out all checklist actions (ECAM actions), the crew declared 'PAN PAN' to Srinagar ATC and requested for RADAR vectors and made a safe landing with Auto Thrust operating normally," the statement said.
Generally, 'PAN PAN' refers to an emergency situation. The regulator said the matter is under investigation and that there was no injury to any of the passengers on-board the flight. "Post-flight walk around revealed damage to the Nose radome," the statement said.
On Thursday, IndiGo, in a statement, said the aircraft was undergoing necessary inspection and maintenance in Srinagar and will resume operations once all clearances have been secured.

Over 200 Prisoners Escape From High-Security Jail After Quake In Pakistan
Karachi: Over 200 prisoners have escaped from a high-security jail in Pakistan's port city of Karachi after chaos erupted following an earthquake, a minister said on Tuesday. Hundreds of prisoners broke down the doors of their cells after they felt tremors at Malir Jail in Karachi, which was hit by three low-intensity earthquakes on Monday, police said. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul Hasan Lanjhar confirmed on Tuesday that 216 prisoners had escaped the jail. He added that 78 prisoners were re-captured in 24 hours. Mr Lanjhar said that when the tremors occurred on the night of Monday night, prisoners panicked and started resorting to violence to come out of their cells. "Police officials tried to ensure their safety and brought them out of the cells after which some prisoners resorted to violence and escaped," he added. He said a dozen policemen and prisoners were injured in the violence while a prisoner was shot dead while trying to escape. The minister said if the prisoners returned voluntarily, the government would consider a reduction in their sentences. He warned that those caught by the police would be tried under anti-terrorism laws. Malir Jail also houses over 100 Indian prisoners, most of them poor fishermen serving time for allegedly fishing illegally in Pakistan's waters. A police official said that they were kept in a separate barrack and they remained in their cells during the earthquake. Earlier, Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah said over 600 prisoners were taken out from their barracks during the quake, Pakistan's Geo TV reported. Law enforcement authorities have launched a joint operation to track down the remaining escapees. The incident has led to the dismissal of IG prisons, the jail superintendent and other high-ranking officials.

Unseasonal rains have dampened consumer demand, but rural growth provides positive outlook for FMCG sector: Report
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): The Indian FMCG sector is facing mixed conditions, with unseasonal rains posing a challenge to the sales of summer-centric products, while rural markets outdid urban for the fourth straight quarter, a report said on Tuesday. According to the report by Anand Rathi Research, the unseasonal rainfall in April and May has dampened consumer demand for items like soft drinks, ice creams, prickly heat talc, and skincare products. Weather disruption has affected sales of items whose demand fluctuates with seasons but the report says that impact may be limited. Most FMCG companies remain optimistic about a rebound in demand. The expectation is that rural markets, which have shown strong growth, could be further bolstered by a normal monsoon season, offsetting some of the losses in summer product sales. The report also emphasizes that the FMCG sector is demonstrating resilience. While the unseasonal rains have posed a challenge, the sector's overall outlook remains largely positive. This optimism stems from several factors, primarily the continued strength of rural markets. Rural market outperformed urban market for the fourth consecutive quarter, with rural volume growth at a rate of 8.4%, which was nearly 4 times of the urban growth. 'Most companies are seeing stronger rural traction, while urban demand is muted, but gradual recovery is expected in coming quarters,' the report said. This rural strength is expected to continue, particularly with the anticipation of a normal monsoon season, which is crucial for agricultural output and rural incomes. A favourable monsoon would further fuel consumer spending in rural areas, potentially offsetting some of the losses incurred in the summer product segment due to the unseasonal rains. FMCG companies are banking on a gradual recovery in urban demand. While currently lagging behind rural markets, urban centers are expected to regain momentum in the coming quarters, contributing to a more balanced growth trajectory for the sector. Companies are also adapting to evolving consumer behaviour, with e-commerce and quick commerce channels playing an increasingly important role in FMCG sales. (ANI)
