Zohr gas field output increases after well redrilling - Energy

Al-Ahram Weekly3 days ago

Egypt's Zohr gas field has increased its natural gas output by 60 million cubic feet per day following the successful redrilling of the Zohr-6 well, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Friday.
The redrilling was carried out using the deepwater drilling rig "Saipem 10000," after it returned to the Zohr gas field in January to resume operations per the approved development plan.
Following the completion of Zohr-6, the rig carried out its scheduled tasks. It began drilling at the "Zohr-13" well, which engineering studies estimate will add 55 million cubic feet of gas per day.
The drilling operations mark a significant step toward strengthening the natural gas supply system. They will further enhance domestic production levels and confirm earlier predictions by the Ministry of Petroleum.
Furthermore, these efforts align with the ministry's strategy to boost domestic production, ensure energy availability, and provide petroleum products to various sectors while meeting citizens' needs.
In a statement, the ministry further highlighted its successful partnership with Italian company Eni, operator of the Zohr Field, resulting in the implementation of previously agreed development plans.
It highlighted the Egyptian government's full support of its operations to encourage investment in the petroleum sector, maximise domestic output, and ensure energy security and resource sustainability.

Egypt real GDP grows by 4.7% in 3Q of FY24/25 despite global uncertainty - Economy

Egypt's economy accelerated its recovery in the third quarter (3Q) of the current FY2024/2025 (January-March 2025), recording a growth rate of 4.77 percent, the highest quarterly performance in three years, according to a statement by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation on Monday. This figure is nearly double the 2.2 percent recorded in the same quarter of FY2023/2024. This pushes the average growth rate for the first nine months of FY2024/2025 to 4.2 percent, up from 2.4 percent in the corresponding period of FY2023/2024. Minister of Planning Rania Al-Mashat said this robust performance reflects the growing resilience of the Egyptian economy, particularly amid mounting global geopolitical and financial volatility. The third-quarter GDP surge was primarily driven by sustained progress in the government's structural reform agenda under the National Structural Reform Programme, which focuses on macroeconomic stability, efficient public investment governance, competitiveness, and private sector empowerment. Key drivers of growth Among the key sectors driving Egypt's economic growth are non-oil manufacturing, tourism (including hotels and restaurants), and telecommunications. The non-oil manufacturing sector grew by 16 percent, marking its fourth consecutive quarter of positive growth and contributing 1.9 percent to the overall GDP growth. This follows a contraction of nearly four percent in the same quarter of FY2023/2024. Tourism also continued its strong rebound, growing by 23 percent year-on-year in 3Q. The sector hosted four million tourists during that quarter, generating 41 million tourist nights. Moreover, the telecommunications sector registered a solid growth rate of 14.7 percent. Other supportive sectors like financial intermediation (17.3 percent), insurance (7.7 percent), electricity (5.8 percent), and construction (3.1 percent) added further momentum to economic recovery. Additionally, Egypt's industrial production index (except petroleum products) rose by 16 percent. High-growth industries included motor vehicles (93 percent), ready-made garments (58 percent), beverages (34 percent), paper (20 percent), and textiles (17 percent). Export-led expansion, private investment boom On the expenditure side, net exports made a significant contribution to GDP growth, adding 2.7 percent. Exports surged by 54.4 percent, far outpacing the 18.7 percent growth in imports. Industrial exports of finished goods rose by 12.7 percent, driven by increased competitiveness and demand. The ready-made garments industry was a standout performer, growing by over 23.7 percent in the third quarter, a testament to Egypt's capacity to adapt to shifts in global trade dynamics. Private investment also grew impressively by 24.2 percent year-on-year at constant prices, accounting for 62.8 percent of total investment (excluding inventory) and outpacing public investment for the third straight quarter. This reflects investor confidence and the impact of pro-business policies aimed at harnessing the potential of the private sector. However, the steep 45.6 percent decline in public investment, which now accounts for only 37.2 percent of implemented investments, led to a negative contribution from overall investment, subtracting approximately 2.44 percent from GDP growth. Declining sectors and global headwinds Despite the upbeat overall outlook, some sectors continued to contract. The Suez Canal, affected by regional geopolitical tensions and lower shipping traffic, saw a 23.1 percent year-on-year decline in 3Q, though this was a notable improvement from the 51.6 percent contraction a year earlier. Meanwhile, the extractive industries sector continued to face pressure. Petroleum activity contracted by 9.5 percent, and natural gas extraction declined by 20.5 percent. However, the government expects upcoming field developments and discoveries to reverse this trend. Structural reform and outlook Minister Al-Mashat noted that the ongoing reform efforts are integral to Egypt's development vision, especially the shift toward a competitive, export-oriented, private sector-led economy. These efforts are also reflected in the broader Economic and Social Development Plan for FY2025/2026, which the parliament approved in June 2025. The new plan projects a 4.5 percent GDP growth rate for the next fiscal year, despite ongoing global uncertainties. It maintains a cap on public investment at EGP 1.154 trillion and emphasizes redirecting government spending toward human capital development. Approximately 47 percent of treasury-funded public investments are allocated to education, health, and social services. Recovery confirmed by indicators High-frequency indicators continue to point to a broad-based recovery. Egypt's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reached 50.7 in January 2025, its highest in over four years. Though it dipped slightly to 49.2 in March, the index remained near the neutral mark, indicating relative stability in non-oil private sector activity. Preliminary data suggest that Egypt's full-year GDP growth in FY2024/2025 will exceed the four percent target, driven by solid non-oil manufacturing, strong export performance, and a recovery in private sector activity. This strong momentum positions the country for further gains in FY2025/2026. Impact of geopolitical risks contained The recent outbreak of war between Israel and Iran on 13 June initially raised concerns about broader regional volatility. However, the economic impact on Egypt's key markets has so far remained limited. Oil and commodity markets have shown resilience, enabling the government to maintain its FY2025/2026 targets. Egypt set to become regional industrial hub across ME, Africa

10TH OF RAMADAN CITY, Egypt, June 28 (MENA) – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stressed on Saturday that Egypt is on track to becoming a true regional hub for industry in various sectors across the Middle East and Africa, thanks to its success in attracting leading global manufacturers. In a press conference following the inauguration of the Bosch home appliances factory in 10th of Ramadan City, Madbouly extended his greetings to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Egyptian people on the upcoming anniversary of the June 30 Revolution, describing it as a cherished milestone that set Egypt back on the right course. The prime minister noted that the newly inaugurated Bosch facility represents the third major plant in Egypt's home appliances sector, following earlier inaugurations of the Chinese company Haier and Turkey's Beko. He underlined that these achievements were the result of the Egyptian state's proactive approach, personally reaching out to top executives and convincing them of Egypt's strong appeal as an investment destination. Madbouly explained that the government succeeded in granting these companies direct land allocation and the golden license, while removing all obstacles to expedite the establishment of their factories. 'As a result, Egypt is not only becoming a center for local manufacturing, but also a strategic industrial hub serving the broader Middle East and Africa.' He highlighted that the inauguration of these plants comes amid intensive efforts by the government and daily follow-up by President Sisi, who is deeply committed to advancing Egypt's industrial renaissance. Madbouly added that the Bosch plant was constructed under the highest international standards and currently employs around 1,000 Egyptians who have been trained to deliver products matching the quality of the company's factories worldwide. He pointed out that half of the plant's annual output of 350,000 cookers is earmarked for export, while local components now account for nearly 50 percent of the product, expected to rise to 70 percent within two years. Sisi orders continued airport development under int'l partnerships

NEW ALAMEIN CITY, Egypt, June 28 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has directed that the development of Egyptian airports continue through international partnerships grounded in efficiency and sustainability, alongside encouraging private sector involvement. The steps are part of Egypt Vision 2030, aiming to transform airports into advanced regional hubs operating under the latest global systems, while also providing an attractive investment climate that ensures economic viability and sustainable development, Presidential Spokesman Mohamed al-Shennawy said in a statement Saturday following Sisi's meeting in Alamein with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh el Hafny and Chairperson of EgyptAir In-Flight Services Soheir Abdallah. The meeting reviewed the comprehensive strategic vision to advance the civil aviation sector, covering air navigation, fleet expansion, airport upgrades, and human resource development in support of Egypt's target to raise annual tourist arrivals to 30 million. The President was also briefed on the 'New Republic Air Gate' at Terminal 4 of Cairo International Airport, including the technical and operational specifications of the project, which will establish a new passenger terminal under the highest global standards, with a capacity of at least 30 million passengers, raising the airport's overall capacity to over 60 million annually. The project will fully comply with safety, security, and environmental sustainability standards. The minister further outlined the national strategy, developed with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as the ministry's strategic advisor, to involve the private sector in operating and developing airports. The plan aims to be finalized by summer 2025 and seeks to enhance the civil aviation sector's efficiency, improve passenger services, and attract private investments and advanced operational expertise to develop 11 key airports, while fully maintaining public ownership of these strategic assets. Sisi instructed moving ahead with modern airport development approaches and to offer Hurghada Airport for private sector partnership by the end of 2025. The spokesman added the meeting also covered Egypt's air navigation sector, highlighting international praise for the country's air traffic management amid recent regional crises and neighboring airspace closures, which increased traffic over Egypt to more than 1,600 aircraft daily. Organizations such as Eurocontrol, ICAO, and IATA commended Egyptian air traffic controllers for managing the surge efficiently without compromising safety or operational discipline. The talks also tackled plans to restructure Egypt's airspace and upgrade radar and communication systems. The session further touched on EgyptAir's recent progress, including winning, for the first time, the Skytrax award for 'Best Airline Staff in Africa' for 2025 during the Paris Air Show. The airline also earned awards for best economy class meals, fastest-growing airline in Africa (for the second year running), and best cabin crew on the continent. The minister noted EgyptAir advanced 20 places from last year, ranking 68th among the world's top 100 airlines out of over 325 carriers, and outlined the airline's plan to grow its fleet to 97 aircraft by 2028/2029 to boost competitiveness and enhance passenger experience. Additionally, he reviewed efforts to upgrade EgyptAir In-Flight Services by improving infrastructure and equipment, training staff, modernizing ground services, elevating international service standards, and upgrading business lounges to meet the highest levels of comfort and service. The company is also working to improve its on-time performance. (MENA)
