‘Brighter Meals' Lead To Mass Poisoning At China Kindergarten, 230 Kids Hospitalised

Authorities arrested six kindergarten staff and are investigating 27 others after over 230 children in Gansu were poisoned by food contaminated with lead pigment.
Chinese authorities arrested six kindergarten staff and launched disciplinary investigations into 27 others after more than 230 children in Gansu province were poisoned by food contaminated with industrial-grade lead pigment. The incident, which took place earlier this month at the Brownstone Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui city, is being described as one of the worst school food safety scandals in recent Chinese history.
An investigative report released by the Gansu provincial party committee cited widespread failures, misconduct and cover-ups at nearly every level of oversight, from school administrators to public health and government officials.
According to the report, the kindergarten's principal instructed kitchen staff to enhance the visual appeal of meals by adding brightly coloured pigment to the food with the aim of boosting enrolments. The school cook purchased industrial-grade colourants online despite packaging clearly marked 'not for consumption."
One of the pigments was later found to contain lead levels 400,000 times above the legal safety limit. The kindergarten had previously used food-safe dyes but reportedly switched to the more toxic version because it produced more vivid colours.
Hundreds Of Children Affected
Initial reports said 235 children were hospitalised after eating the tainted meals, with symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting and in some cases even blackened teeth. Subsequent testing confirmed that 247 children and several staff members- including the principal- had elevated levels of lead in their blood. While most students have since been discharged from hospital, the provincial government said the case caused 'deep sorrow" and issued a formal apology to affected families.
Institutional Failure And Cover-Up Revealed
The official report accuses multiple institutions of negligence and misconduct in both the lead-up to and aftermath of the poisoning. The Gansu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention was faulted for violating health protocols while collecting samples, resulting in test results that vastly understated the true scale of contamination.
The local education bureau was also heavily criticized for allowing the kindergarten to operate without a valid license. Authorities admitted that no food safety inspections had been conducted at private kindergartens in the area for at least two years.

Can Strawberries Really Whiten Teeth? Dentist Debunks Popular DIY Trend

While the mallic acid in strawberries can whiten the teeth, the effect is short-term and cosmetic only. A dentist debunks the science behind this viral DIY hack. Strawberries are a delicious and nutrient-packed fruit, often praised for their vitamin C and antioxidant benefits. But beyond their nutritional value, they've also found their way into DIY beauty hacks, particularly for teeth whitening. From Pinterest boards to TikTok videos, the 'strawberry teeth whitening" trick continues to trend, with many claiming it gives them a brighter smile. However, according to Dr. Prakash Tekwani, Consultant Dentist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, this whitening effect is largely a temporary illusion. ' Strawberries contain malic acid, which can remove some surface stains from teeth, making them appear slightly whiter. But the change is minimal, and it does not alter the natural shade of your teeth," he explains. Why Strawberries Seem to Work The malic acid in strawberries acts as a mild natural astringent. This can break down some of the surface stains caused by coffee, tea, or certain foods. 'If you have light staining from beverages, you might notice a small difference after applying mashed strawberries or mixing them with baking soda," says Dr. Tekwani. 'However, this is only a short-term cosmetic enhancement and not a replacement for professional whitening." The Risks of Overuse While strawberries are safe to eat, applying them directly to your teeth too often can cause damage. 'The acid in strawberries can slowly erode tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and even making teeth more prone to staining over time," warns Dr. Tekwani. This is why, if you do try the method, rinsing thoroughly and waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing is crucial to minimise enamel wear. Healthier Ways to Whiten Teeth For a truly brighter smile, Dr. Tekwani recommends proven dental practices. 'Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, and visiting your dentist for routine cleaning remain the gold standard for oral care," he says. Over-the-counter whitening toothpaste approved by dentists or in-clinic treatments are safer and more effective for lasting results. While strawberries may temporarily freshen your smile and reduce minor plaque buildup, they are not a miracle teeth-whitening solution. A balanced approach by limiting staining foods and drinks, maintaining daily cleaning habits, and seeking professional care, remains the best recipe for a healthy, radiant smile. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Apple Is Bringing Back This Important Health Feature For Watch Users: Here's What It Means

Apple Watch models in the US were banned from supporting this health feature since 2024 and now the company has found a way to make it work. Apple Watch users are getting a major update this week which reintroduces an important health feature that has been missing for over a year. The availability of the redesigned Blood Oxygen feature has been confirmed by Apple via this post on Thursday, which also shares the details about the Apple Watch models that will support the new health tool. Apple has been selling Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 smartwatches in the United States since early 2024 without the ability to measure blood oxygen levels amid its patent dispute with Masimo. Apple Watch Gets Blood Oxygen Feature Back: Why Does It Matter? Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 users in the US will get the new feature via an update that is rolling out with the iOS 18.6.1 version and watchOS 11.6.1 for the Apple Watch models. 'Following this update, sensor data from the Blood Oxygen app on Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone, and results can be viewed in the Respiratory section of the Health app," the post by Apple explains. This seems to be Apple's way to bypass the sensor ban. People who bought these Watch models were able to see the Blood Oxygen feature icon but opening the app showed them the message 'the Blood Oxygen app is no longer available." The company said that any Apple Watch model indicated with part numbers ending in LW/A" was part of the banned list. The medical company even accused Apple of poaching its employees to work on similar tech for the Apple Watch which got the ban in place in January 2024. The Apple Watch models before Series 9 and those importing the Apple Watch models were not part of the ban and the users were able to normally use all the health features. view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 07:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
