Wolverhampton Wanderers fan takes on abseil in dad's memory

BBC News14 hours ago
A Wolverhampton Wanderers fan is set to abseil down a stand at the club's stadium in memory of her late father.Wendy Cullis's dad Barry, who was known by everyone as Stan, died in December 2023, seven years after being diagnosed with cancer.Ms Cullis said she wanted to do the Molineux Abseil, which involves descending 25m (82ft) down the Billy Wright Stand, to pay tribute to him and her sister Lorna, who also died from cancer."As a family, I thought it would be a good way to pay tribute and help us move forward, while also raising money for Wolves Foundation," she said.
The family happen to share their surname with the team's former manager Stan Cullis, a name which was "synonymous with the club's illustrious history", a Wolves spokesperson said.Ms Cullis said she thought her father was actually a "distant relative of the man himself" and may have been a second cousin."I don't think the name ever leaves us," she explained. "Every person we meet in Wolverhampton asks us if we knew Stan, and it's something to treasure really."In his final weeks in hospital, Barry was also sent some gifts from the club and was set to receive a call from a former player, but died before it could be arranged.Ms Cullis said she wanted to "repay the favour and that compassion", with money raised from the abseil on 6 September going to the club's official charity."I am definitely looking forward to the challenge, it's a really nice thing to do and I am sure I'll have plenty of support," she said.

Nottingham Forest complete signing of James McAtee from Man City

Nottingham Forest have signed James McAtee from Manchester City for a fee rising to £30m. The England Under-21 captain is set to spark a spell of spending from Forest, who are also expected to confirm the club-record signing of Omari Hutchinson from Ipswich. McAtee has signed a five-year deal at the City Ground after Forest beat off competition from a host of other clubs who were interested in the 22-year-old. He said: 'I feel ready for a new challenge and the club had a great season last year so I want to help build on that and show what I can do. 'I'm so happy to be here and really looking forward to getting started with my new teammates and I know the ambition of everyone associated with the club which is something I want to be a part of.' Forest's Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson added: 'We're absolutely delighted to welcome James to Nottingham Forest. He's a player we've admired for a long time, and our conversations with Manchester City, James, his family and his representatives over the past month have been incredibly constructive. 'After captaining England to the Under-21 European Championship title, James took some time to reflect on his next step - and we're thrilled he's chosen Forest. We are proud to now have three extremely exciting young talents from the group that lifted the Under-21 trophy with Elliot [Anderson], Omari and now James. 'There was strong interest in James, but he showed a real determination to join us. Our players have been excited about the possibility of him arriving, and now we can officially welcome him into the group.' McAtee scored seven goals for City last season but only started three Premier League games for the club and has left in search of more regular first-team football. City manager Pep Guardiola had a host of other options for the attacking midfield positions, including new captain Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Oscar Bobb, Omar Marmoush, Claudio Echeverri and new signings Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.

Manchester City squad too big and ‘not healthy', warns Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola said he was delighted with his new signings' immediate impact in Manchester City's 4-0 rout of Wolves but insisted his squad is too big and at risk of being unhealthy. The summer arrivals Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both scored in the victory at Molineux, where goalkeeper Ederson and midfielder Savinho were absent amid doubts over their long-term futures. The City manager said the club's hierarchy must 'find a solution' before the transfer window closes next month. The injured City pair Rodri and Phil Foden were in the stands, while Guardiola also cited Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol, who are both nearing returns to match fitness. Ederson has been linked with a move to Galatasaray while Savinho is of interest to Tottenham. Rico Lewis, who is wanted by Nottingham Forest, started at full-back in a sign he could stay at City. Asked if he was happy with his squad after the victory at Wolves, Guardiola replied: 'Too many people. It's not about Eddy [Ederson], today [there] was [no] Rodri, Phil, Kovacic, Savinho and Josko. On the bench we had Nathan [Aké] and Gündo [Ilkay Gündogan]. I like a deep squad to compete in all competitions but I don't want to leave players at home. It's not healthy. You cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. 'The club has known [about] it since last season but the situation is what it is. In the next two weeks, people will talk with players and agents to find a solution. We have to reduce the squad because it will be difficult to sustain the vibe of the team.' Wolves paid tribute to Diogo Jota in their first competitive game since the death of their former player and his brother, André Silva. 'Jota and his brother are in our minds and were in our hearts before, during and after the game,' said the Wolves head coach, their Portuguese compatriot Vítor Pereira. 'They are still with us and we tried to do our best to honour them as players, people, because of their families. We will keep him in our hearts for the future and he will be with us for ever.'
