William shows off football skills in partnership with Street Soccer Scotland

Glasgow Times21-05-2025
William joined a practice session run by Street Soccer Scotland, being backed by his Royal Foundation, which will fund a range of initiatives at the charity's branch in Leith, near Edinburgh.
The financial support from the foundation's Community Impact Project will also help the charity create Leith United – a collaboration with Leith Community Centre and YMCA Edinburgh.

The prince met YMCA user Shaniah Gilgun, aged 10, and learnt about her efforts with other youngsters to improve housing conditions in the area, but the conversation turned to football when he spotted a poster of Aston Villa.
Villa fan William mentioned the club's captain, who also leads the Scottish national side, telling Shaniah: 'Maybe I should bring John McGinn… might have to wait till he retires – we'll put it in the pipeline.'
He added: 'He promised me he would come up and show me around.'
After asking a group of children about their football teams during his visit to the community centre, he said of son Prince Louis: 'My youngest supports five different teams now.'

Shaniah later mentioned William's praise for her housing campaign: 'He said it was a really good thing and that we should keep doing it and only good will come out of it.
'When he mentioned John McGinn, I said, 'That's a deal'.'
Street Soccer Scotland was founded by David Duke in Leith in 2009 before he opened centres across Scotland to deliver free football-themed training and personal development programmes to support people experiencing issues like poor mental health, addiction, homelessness and isolation.
The charity will use the Royal Foundation grant to renovate Leith Community Centre, enhance sports-based initiatives at the site, enable outreach work in the community and fund an impact manager over three years to co-ordinate grassroots leaders and local partnerships.

Skye Stout, 16, scores first goal for Kilmarnock as she silences trolls just days after horrific online abuse

Former footballers, sports stars and politicians had rallied around her SKYE'S THE LIMIT Skye Stout, 16, scores first goal for Kilmarnock as she silences trolls just days after horrific online abuse Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE world of football and beyond united in solidarity with Skye Stout a few days ago. The 16-year-old was subject to horrific online abuse after signing for Kilmarnock Women on Thursday - but now she's well and truly shut them up. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Skye Stout signed for Kilmarnock on Thursday and made her debut today Credit: Facebook 2 She went straight into the team to face St Johnstone - and repaid that faith in her Credit: KILMARNOCK FC The Ayrshire side made the decision to take down social media posts announcing her arrival at the club due to her being targeted with abuse over her appearance. Since then there has been a swell of support for the youngster, who has a skin condition. Football heroes such as Jamie Carragher, John Hartson and Ally McCoist posted messages on social media wishing her good luck in what is her first season in senior football. Former Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf also commented, saying: "Skye Stout has just signed for Kilmarnock, at 16 she has already achieved more than her trolls ever will. "Imagine being a grown man abusing a 16-year-old? What a sad, pathetic, unhappy life these trolls have. "Well done Skye, many more good people are rooting for your success!" Now she has silenced the trolls in the best way possible by letting her football do the talking. During Kilmarnock Women's Scottish Women's Premier League 2 game today against St Johnstone, the midfielder stepped up and scored a stunning free-kick to make it 4-0 to her team in the first half. The team posted on X (Twitter): "37' | SKYE STOUT!! "Skye fires in a free-kick on the edge of the box! Ex-Kilmarnock & Morton star Alan Mahood quizzed about his OWN career on Cult Heroes "Kilmarnock 4-0 St Johnstone." Earlier on, she played the key pass to set up her team mate Cara Gray for the goal that made it 3-0. The match at Winton Park in Ardrossan finished 6-2 to Kilmarnock, with Skye playing the first 62 minutes before being substituted. Hundreds of fans filled the comments section with words of encouragement for the player, who may well have attracted a few new fans to the club and perhaps to Scottish women's football. One wrote: "You said you would let the football do the talking! You show them! awesome!" Another said: "Fantastic!! Go Skye, mon the Killie!!" A third said: "Ya beauty! Well done, Skye. Well done team." And a fourth replied: "This will be the best received goal of the weekend. Skye Stout scores from a free kick on her league debut (I'm sure she's got too much class to put two fingers up to the haters)." As a rival fan joked: "The only goal from Killie I'll ever cheer for." And another said: "Putting aside the fact that I'm a Saints fan and celebrating that this girl is clearly hugely talented and showing the haters what she's made of." The Chelsea Women's Supporters Group also commented: "Things you to love to to see." And former Kilmarnock captain Craig Bryson said: "Well done superb." After she was subbed off, the positive comments continued. This fan said: "Well done Skye! And indeed her team mates too." Another replied: "Well done girls and great debut Skye." Even before the game had kicked off, people on Twitter were hoping Skye would score. When Kilmarnock announced she had gone straight into the starting XI, this fan said: "Hope Stout scores a hat-trick." Another said: "It's great to see Skye Stout to be named in the squad to play her first game of the season. I wish her all best of luck. She is going to be a superstar no matter the outcome of the game and she will be a future champion in my eyes and I really mean that from the heart." And a third said: "Good luck Stout. You will smash it. I think that you will score today." The vile trolling was first brought to light by Twitter account Team Grassroots, who highlighted that the posts had been deleted by Kilmarnock just a few hours after they had gone up. They said: "Please send your love and support to 16 year old Skye Stout from Scotland. "And don't let the ignorant bullies win. Yesterday, the official page of the Scottish club Kilmarnock women's team announced that the club had signed a contract with 16-year-old midfielder Skye Stout. "A grassroots player signing her first pro contract, should have been a moment to cherish for her, however Skye was forced to endure ridicule from ignorant and disrespectful fans who began to humiliate her over her facial acne. "Things escalated to the point where the club decided to delete all posts mentioning Skye Stout in an effort to stop the bullying from haters." Their post garnered responses from Carragher, Hartson and McCoist as well as England cricket hero Kevin Pietersen, TikToker Joey Swoll and even Australian TV channel ABC Sport. Several women's football teams also sent messages of support including Newcastle United, West Ham and Exeter City. Pundit floored by sensational Hibs moment that outclassed ‘outrageous' strike as he holds Legia play off hope

Disbelief coursed around all corners of Easter Road as the Hibs faithful celebrated one of the most stunning strikes witnessed at their famous old home. With their participation in this season's UEFA Conference League in the balance after Partizan wiped out David Gray's side's two-goal first leg advantage, Scotland striker Kieron Bowie found himself around 40 yards from goal and took centre stage in a pulsating tie. With several options around him, the former Fulham man wasted little time in trying his luck from distance and sent a powerful, looping volley over visitors goalkeeper Marko Milosevic and into his net via the far post. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The reaction of team-mate Martin Boyle said it all as the Australia international put his hands on his head in utter disbelief over what he had witnessed from Bowie. It was far from the final act in a pulsating night at Easter Road - but it did prove to be a defining moment as it set the foundations for Hibs to progress into a play-off round tie with Legia Warsaw as the two sides meet in the first leg later this week. For pundit Andy Walker, who had a short loan spell at Hibs during his playing career, Bowie's strike was 'sensational' and the former Celtic and Sheffield United striker expressed his hope that David Gray's men could secure safe passage into the league phase of UEFA's tertiary club competition. He told Go Radio: 'I said earlier this week, I don't think I would see a better goal than Ben Brannan, the Kilmarnock volley that was absolutely outrageous. And that one last night from Kieran Bowie. Sensational stuff. So certainly it looks as though Easter Road is a place to be to see some special goals. It'll be a great tie against Legia Warsaw. I really hope Hibs can make that step. I just love to see any of the Scottish clubs that are involved in Europe getting involved in the group stages, the guaranteed European football that takes you up to Christmas and beyond. It's exactly what the players want. The players will learn a lot from it, just as the managers and all the coaching staff will as well.' What did David Gray say about Kieron Bowe's goal for Hibs against Partizan? Hibs head coach David Gray celebrates at the full time whistle | SNS Group Speaking after the game, the Hibs boss said: 'It's a good clearance. No, as I say, take his goal out of it, he was exceptional tonight. Everything he did from the first second onwards, he was a real handful. Everything we've spoken about Kieron before was there again to see. His goal was a special goal for a special night. I spoke about if you win the game tonight, it would be a special night. It doesn't matter how you get through, it would be a special occasion. It was great a goal, probably unfortunate that didn't actually win us the game there and then. So I'm delighted for him on a personal level because of what he's been through.'

Celtic outcast makes immediate impact at loan club as he's called ‘best player on the pitch'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HE was cast aside and essentially forgotten about by Celtic. But after just a few games at his new club, he's being hailed as the best player on the pitch. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 2 Luis Palma in action for Lech Poznan, where he is on loan from Celtic Credit: Getty 2 Palma was loaned out last season too Credit: Kenny Ramsay It became clear last season that Brendan Rodgers simply wasn't having Luis Palma. The Honduran winger had a productive first year at Parkhead in 2023/24 but last season he was sent on loan to Olympiacos for the second half of the campaign after making just 12 appearances for the Hoops, mostly from the bench. This summer the club were keen to try and move him on and last month he agreed to another loan switch, this time to Lech Poznan in Poland. The 23-year-old has so far played five times for his new loan club and last night he scored his first goal. Palma headed home an 83rd-minute equaliser against Korona Kielce and his performance in general impressed fans. One said: "Man, he impressively hustles in every match. Hopefully, success doesn't go to his head." Another said: "Luis Palma's first goal in Poland. May many more come." While this supporter said: "The best footballer on the pitch today, Luis Palma." An option to buy clause for Poznan was inserted into the deal for Palma at the end of the season. He penned a five-year deal with the Hoops when he arrived in 2023 and scored ten goals in 36 matches during his first season in Scottish football. Sarmiento launch a throw back shirt design inspired by Celtic Celtic paid Aris Thessaloniki a fee of £3.5million for the player, who can also play centrally as well as out wide. When joining Poznan, Palma insisted that it was he who had pushed to leave Celtic Park. He said: "I am very happy with the move. I'm delighted to be joining my new club and it was all done very quickly. "I spoke with Celtic and it was my decision to look elsewhere. "I don't know too much about the Polish League, except that it's a good league, with big stadiums and big clubs. "I am going to learn a lot about football there. My goal is to play as much as possible and make a good impression. "I spoke to Reinaldo Rueda about the move, but I did so more as a friend."
