Musk's Starlink finally gets government licence to launch satcom services

Starlink got approval for three licences - Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS), Commercial Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT), and Internet Service Provider (ISP) - which will enable the company launch a slew of satellite-based communication services in India, ranging from consumer to enterprise internet solutions.
TOI was the first to report in its June 4 editions that the govt has decided to approve Starlink's licence applications, which had been pending for the past three-four years, after the company agreed to abide by security and other requisite conditions.
Starlink, which becomes the third telecom company to receive the GMPCS licence after Bharti group-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio SES, is expected to get trial spectrum over the coming weeks.
However, the company is not likely to launch consumer and enterprise services any time soon, since none of the satcom licence holders have been allotted spectrum yet. Recommendations regarding the method of administrative allocation of satcom spectrum, as well as the charges, have been submitted by regulator Trai to govt, but no final decision has been taken on the matter.
Starlink will also have to put the ground infrastructure within India to correspond with its satellites and enable communication services. "This will take months to build, and will require approvals from security agencies," sources said. Starlink operates a constellation of Low-Earth Orbit satellites that are positioned around 550 km above the earth and closer than traditional geostationary satellites.

Trichy corpn may curtail land acquisition for IBT link road
Trichy: Municipal administration minister K N Nehru on Thursday inspected the work for the IBT link road to connect various parts of Trichy city with the KKBT Panjapur through the banks of a river and canal. Trichy corporation sources said that the extent of land acquisition for the project is most likely to be curtailed but without any major alterations to the total length and width of the original plan. The work is undertaken in three phases, with phase I connecting KKBT vicinity with Karumandapam, phase II from Woraiyur to Kudamurutti bridge on Karur national highway, and phase III, the longest stretch from Karumandapam to Woraiyur. Administrative approvals for phases I and II were obtained at 81.7 crore and 68 crore respectively, but phase III proposed at 182 crore is making slow progress due to private land acquisition. Around 20.9 acres of land were slated to be acquired, however, considering the tedious process, the local body is inclined to restrict the land acquisition to around five acres. Multiple sources confirmed that the length and width of the two-lane link road will not be altered much. "We are trying to reduce the extent of land acquisition with a minor modification plan in short stretches so that the work for the pending phase will commence in a month's time without waiting for land acquisition," a source said. The total cost of the 9.9km long link road was estimated at 331.7 crore. Govt launches archaeological research fellowship scheme
Panaji: Govt has launched the Goa archaeological research fellowship scheme to encourage qualified scholars to delve into Goa's ancient history using primary archaeological sources. The scheme offers four research fellowships, split evenly between junior and senior levels, each awarded for two years. Junior fellows will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 25,000, and senior fellows Rs 40,000. The scheme targets scholars with a background in ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology, history, or Indology. The fellowship is a one-time award per category per individual, and recipients cannot avail themselves of other department of archaeology fellowships for five years after their project submission. A five-member committee will review proposals and select fellows based on academic merit and project relevance. Selected scholars must submit half-yearly progress reports and deliver their final project within 30 days after completing their tenure. The research outcomes will become the exclusive property of the department of archaeology. A dedicated monitoring and review committee will oversee the fellowship's progress, meeting regularly to evaluate ongoing projects.
