Meta keeps trying to invent the future. It hasn't worked yet

CNN17-02-2025
Facebook kickstarted the modern social media age in the early 2000s. But its parent company Meta's ambitions to expand over the last decade haven't had nearly the same success. It's still apparently trying again anyway, with the latest big thing: humanoid robots.
A new Meta team is working on robots capable of doing household tasks, Bloomberg reported Friday. But the broader goal, according to the report, is to create a platform that other companies can use to build their robots – a feat that would make Meta a critical part of the robotics industry.
And Meta needs that kind of win. While its social media apps have proven to be wildly popular, it lost the race to control the devices you actually use those apps on – namely phones. Apple and Google quickly dominated the smartphone landscape in the early 2000s, leaving little room for anyone else, including Meta, to compete.
Now, Meta is seemingly trying to make sure it doesn't miss out again. Over the last half-decade, it's made an aggressive push into artificial intelligence and the metaverse to get ahead of whatever the next big thing may be – and to escape Facebook's shadow. An expansion into robotics would be a big step toward that goal.
But the company will face competition. Tesla flaunted its humanoid Optimus robot at last year's Cybercab launch event, and chipmaker Nvidia announced new AI tech designed to power robots at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
A Meta spokesperson did not respond to CNN's request for comment.
Meta's biggest effort to move beyond Facebook came in 2021 when it rebranded itself as Meta to orient the company around the 'metaverse,' a broad term for digital communal spaces typically in virtual reality.
It was a statement that Meta is far more than just a social media app, but a platform that would help define the next era of computing.
'We are at the beginning of the next chapter for the internet, and it's the next chapter for our company too,' the company said in its 2021 founder's letter, signed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Still, nearly half a decade later, the metaverse remains niche, unlike the ubiquitous smartphone.
Just 7.7 million mixed reality headsets are expected to ship globally in 2025, according to market research firm the International Data Corporation (IDC), compared to the 331.7 million smartphones estimated to have shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2024 alone. Still, Meta is by far the headset leader, with the IDC reporting that it accounts for nearly 71% of the market.
Meta's previous efforts to branch out from social media didn't resonate broadly with consumers.
In 2013 it launched a Facebook-branded phone in partnership with Taiwanese tech company HTC, once a major player in the Android phone market. But shortly after its release, AT&T dropped the device's price down to just $0.99 in what was an unmistakable sign of poor sales – and perhaps an indication that consumers didn't want more Facebook on their phone other than in its app.
Meta also tried to get in on the smart home business with a video calling device called the Meta Portal (initially Facebook Portal), which in launched in 2018 but has since been discontinued.
But Meta's latest expansion into consumer hardware with its Ray-Ban smart glasses shows promise. Ray-Ban parent company EssilorLuxottica said in its 2024 earnings release on February 12 that it has sold two million pairs of the glasses since their 2023 debut.
That number is small in the context of well-established devices like smartphones, and even in the world of virtual reality headsets. But smart glasses are still a very new category, leaving plenty of potential opportunity for Meta.
That's if it can fend off upcoming competition from Google and Samsung, which announced a new version of Android for mixed reality headsets and smart glasses in December, hoping to replicate the success they've experienced in the mobile industry.
Meta's ambitions with humanoid robots may be slightly different, according to Bloomberg's report. While the company may consider making a Meta-branded home robot, the primary ambition would be to create a platform for robots – much like how Android is a platform that powers phones.
It's all part of Meta's mission to make the name 'Meta' mean something other than just social media apps.

Google's AI could lead you into scam support numbers on Search

Over the past few months, we have come across numerous cases where sophisticated AI tools have been used to duplicate a person's voice and trap a person in financial scams. Experts have also warned that AI is opening new avenues of online fraud. It seems Google's AI overviews and the AI Mode results could unknowingly entangle you in a similar trap. The owner of a real estate firm recently reported how they came across a phone number while looking up Royal Caribbean's customer service number. The number they found in the Google AI Overviews section at the top of the Search page wasn't real and was run by a scammer instead. Recommended Videos 'I'm sharing this as a public service announcement. With AI-generated results and spoofed numbers, the game has changed,' Alex Rivlin, owner of the company, said in a Facebook post. He added that he managed to escape at the last moment, but not before he had already handed over his credit card details to the bad actor. Another report mentions a similar fake support number attached to Southwest Airlines. The number that appears in the Google AI Overview doesn't appear on the Southwest Airlines website, and apparently handled by tricksters trying to charge hundreds of dollars for fixing a misspelled name on tickets. Why is it risky to seek helpline numbers with AI? On Reddit, I came across a report detailing the account of an individual who was also on the verge of getting scammed after looking up the number of a food delivery service's customer support contact on Google Search. The scam has already tricked many, and a 65-year-old man recently lost over three thousand dollars after looking up 'Swiggy call centre' on Google Search. To test whether the issues persist, I looked up 'swiggy customer care number' and switched to the new Google AI Mode. This is where the confusion begins. Swiggy's website clearly mentions that they do 'not have any official customer care phone lines. Beware of fake numbers.' Google's AI mode says Swiggy 'primarily' refers users to solve the issue within the apps. Underneath, it adds that 'some sources mention these numbers as Swiggy Customer Service contact options.' This is again confusing and misleading in its own right. One of the numbers is only for partner onboarding, and not for 'customer care,' which was the original search query. Moreover, the two other numbers don't appear on an official Swiggy directory. Furthermore, one of those numbers even appears in a report lodged by a misled customer on the non-profit ConsumerComplaintsCourt website. How to proceed safely? This is not a unique problem. For a while now, Google Search results have been flooded by fake numbers in the guise of customer support helplines, waiting to scam an unsuspecting user. But with the advent of AI tools in Search, such as AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, the risks have multiplied. 'Scammers have discovered that they can flood user-generated content sites and forums with fake phone numbers for major businesses, then trick callers into sharing their credit card information,' Lily Ray, Vice President of SEO Strategy & Research at Amsive, wrote on LinkedIn. Experts at Odin and ITBrew also highlighted how hackers can write a 'command that Gemini must include the message and its phony tech-support contact number in its summary response.' Google, it seems, is aware of the problem. Google told The Washington Post that it continues to remove unreliable entries from AI Overviews. In the meantime, as an average internet user, the best advice that I can give you is that for all customer support helpline numbers and email addresses, visit the official website of the companies and look up the required contact details.

Constellation Energy (CEG) Strikes 20-Year PPA with Meta, Boosts Nuclear Expansion Plans

We recently published .Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CEG) is one of these profitable utility stocks. Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CEG), a Fortune 200 leader in emissions-free energy, delivers nearly 90% carbon-free power through nuclear, hydro, wind, and solar sources, serving businesses, homes, and public sectors nationwide. It powers the equivalent of 16 million homes, including three-fourths of Fortune 100 companies. Recent highlights include a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Meta starting in 2027, covering the full output of the Clinton Clean Energy Center. This deal supports Meta's clean energy goals and enables a 30-megawatt capacity expansion at the Clinton facility, which will provide low-cost, reliable power to the local grid for decades. Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CEG) is making major investments in Pennsylvania's nuclear sector: the Crane Clean Energy Center is set to restart operations a year early in 2027 with 835 megawatts capacity; the company is seeking Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval to extend Peach Bottom Energy Center's operations through 2054; and the Limerick Clean Energy Center plans life extension and a 340-megawatt capacity boost to operate through the 2040s, backed by customer commitments. These efforts aim to enhance grid reliability and foster innovation, including in AI. The business also launched an AI-driven demand response tool to help businesses reduce energy consumption during peak periods, boosting grid efficiency and cutting costs. Copyright: highwaystarz / 123RF Stock Photo In Q2 2025, Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CEG) reported adjusted operating earnings of $1.91 per share, surpassing analyst expectations, fueled by rising electricity demand from AI, electric vehicles, and industrial growth. Opinion: The 3 Best Tech Stocks to Own Right Now

Key Points Meta's business is building momentum. Tech conglomerate Sea Limited is sailing a familiar path to growth. Reddit's revenue grew by 78% in its most recent quarter. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Investors often look at stocks in terms of what they want to buy. This is understandable as they frequently have money to put to work, and opportunities in specific stocks can disappear after a short time. Still, as many investing experts have taught, time in the market almost always beats timing the market, meaning investors may want to seek a stock that is more than a short-term trade. This is particularly true with tech investing. Fortunately, the tech industry offers stocks that are great buys right now and could deliver returns year after year. Knowing that, three analysts from The Motley Fool have chosen stocks that hold such potential. Meta Platforms remains a strong buy after a blowout quarter Justin Pope (Meta Platforms): My pick is social media giant Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), the company behind Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Messenger. To put it simply, the company represents one of the most compelling combinations of high-level performance happening right now and long-term potential you'll find on the market. Meta Platforms recently delivered a stellar earnings report that punctuated the momentum of its core digital advertising business. Ad impressions (volume) were up 11% year over year, while ad pricing increased by 9%. Meanwhile, its app family's daily active user count rose by 6% to a whopping 3.48 billion people. The result? Meta's net income surged 36% in the second quarter, and the growth kept its cash flow positive despite massive investments in data centers for artificial intelligence (AI). Moving to the long-term upside, Meta is investing in the infrastructure and people to become an AI leader, a tremendous opportunity to enhance its core advertising business, build out potential future revenue streams like wearable devices, and monetize its AI model, Llama, which has over 1 billion downloads. Meta Platforms is investing tens of billions of dollars into AI, but isn't drowning itself in debt to fund it. The company's financial prowess has enabled it to primarily fund its data center buildouts with cash and cash flow. The stock also remains attractively priced, despite the stock rising by over 340% over the past three years. Meta Platforms trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 28, an appealing valuation if the company grows earnings at a 17% annualized rate over the long term, as analysts anticipate. Investors should stop ignoring this Southeast Asian tech giant Will Healy (Sea Limited): Although it often gets overlooked since it operates primarily in Southeast Asia, my choice is the tech conglomerate Sea Limited (NYSE: SE). The Singapore-based company runs a gaming segment as well as e-commerce and fintech arms that conduct business primarily in seven Southeast Asian countries and Brazil. This leads to the inevitable comparisons to Amazon or MercadoLibre, tech conglomerates in different parts of the world that are well known for e-commerce but have arguably had their most significant successes in other businesses. Indeed, one could arguably perceive Sea Limited as a second chance at investing in Amazon. The company started as a gaming enterprise, Garena, a segment most famous for its popular mobile game Free Fire. It later ventured into e-commerce with Shopee, and that has since become the largest e-retailer in Southeast Asia. Moreover, to bolster online sales to its developing world customer base, it introduced fintech enterprise Monee, which has often served as Sea Limited's fastest-growing segment. Its other two segments have not grown as consistently. Still, Shopee improved when the company pulled out of most faraway markets where it held no competitive advantage and began investing more heavily in logistics in its home region. Also, amid a recovery in Free Fire, the long-suffering Garena segment has finally returned to growth. Consequently, the $10 billion in revenue for the first half of 2025 grew 35% compared to the same period in 2024. Also, since expenses grew by only 24% over the same time frame, its net income attributable to shareholders for the first two quarters of 2025 was $809 million, far above the $58 million in the same year-ago period. That improvement took the stock higher by approximately 160% over the last year. Also, even though the 123 P/E ratio may appear pricey, the forward P/E ratio of 41 arguably makes the stock attractive given its massive growth. Ultimately, as it draws gamers and solidifies its position in Southeast Asia, Sea Limited is likely to remain an attractive tech holding for some time to come. Reddit's explosive growth make it a tech stock to watch Jake Lerch (Reddit): For me, Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) is the best tech stock to own right now. First of all, Reddit is enjoying explosive growth across the board. The company recently announced fantastic second-quarter earnings results (for the three months ending on June 30, 2025). Revenue skyrocketed by an astounding 78% year over year to $500 million. Ad revenue, which makes up 93% of Reddit's total revenue, grew by 84%. In addition, the company recorded its highest-ever quarterly profit, with net income climbing to $89 million versus a loss of $10 million a year ago. Moreover, user engagement on Reddit remains strong. The company reported 110 million daily average uniques (DAUqs), representing a 21% increase from the same period last year. Reddit is also benefiting from the AI revolution. The company's vast library of content is appealing to large language model (LLM) developers, who rely on it to train their models. Accordingly, Reddit has already signed a licensing deal with Alphabet. In turn, Reddit further benefits from the use of its content library, as search results often boost site traffic. Finally, the company's incredible margins mean that Reddit could become immensely profitable once it fully scales up its business model. For example, Reddit's gross margin in its most recent quarter was 91%, while its operating margin was only 3%. If the company can become more operationally efficient -- by increasing ad rates, reducing operating costs, or introducing subscription services -- it has plenty of room to grow its profits. In summary, Reddit is an ideal choice for growth-oriented tech investors right now. Should you buy stock in Meta Platforms right now?
