Gold prices dropped on Monday as traders locked in profits following a rally to a near two-month peak, sparked by intensified clashes between Israel and Iran over the weekend that heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.
Spot gold was down 0.5% at $3,414.32 an ounce, as of 0634 GMT, after hitting its highest level since April 22 earlier in the session.
U.S. gold futures were also down 0.5% at $3,434.80.
"It's the joint political risk premium that's rising due to the Iran-Israel conflict at this point that has boosted safe-haven demand for gold," said Kelvin Wong, a senior market analyst, Asia Pacific at OANDA.
"We have a clear break above $3,400 right now and the short term uptrend is intact. We are seeing resistance level at $3,500 and with the possibility of breaking new high above the $3,500 level."
Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on Sunday, killing and wounding civilians and raising concerns of a broader regional conflict, with both militaries urging civilians on the opposing side to take precautions against further strikes.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he hopes Israel and Iran can broker a deal but said sometimes countries have to fight it out first.
Gold is considered a safe-haven asset during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
Investors this week will look forward to a host of central bank monetary policy decisions, with the spotlight on the U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday.
The U.S. central bank is widely anticipated to keep interest rates steady, with markets awaiting signals on potential rate cuts in the months ahead.
Futures markets suggest expectations for two rate cuts by year-end, possibly starting in September, bolstered by tame inflation data last week.
Elsewhere, spot silver gained 0.2% to $36.36 per ounce, platinum rose 1.5% to $1,245.67, while palladium climbed 1.5% to $1,043.53. - Reuters

G7 unity tested as Trump calls Russia ouster a mistake
KANANASKIS, Alberta: Leaders from the Group of Seven nations began annual talks on Monday with wars escalating in Ukraine and the Middle East, as US President Donald Trump said removing Russia from the former Group of Eight was a mistake. The G7 leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US, along with the European Union, are convening in the resort area of Kananaskis in the Canadian Rockies until Tuesday. With an escalating Israel-Iran conflict, the summit in Canada is seen as a vital moment to try to restore a semblance of unity among democratic powerhouses. In an early sign that they may struggle to reach agreement on key issues, a US official said Trump would not sign a draft statement calling for de-escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict. Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said kicking Russia out of the former Group of Eight was a mistake. Members removed Russia in 2014 after it annexed Crimea. "This was a big mistake," Trump said. "You wouldn't have that war. You know you have your enemy at the table, I don't even consider, he wasn't really an enemy at that time." Canada has abandoned any effort to adopt a comprehensive communique to avert a repeat of the 2018 summit in Quebec, when Trump instructed the US delegation to withdraw its approval of the final communique after leaving. Leaders have prepared several other draft documents seen by Reuters, including on migration, artificial intelligence, and critical mineral supply chains. None of them have been approved by the United States, however, according to sources briefed on the documents. Europeans are on the same page on most issues, a European diplomat said. But without Trump, it is unclear if there will be any declarations, the diplomat said. The first five months of Trump's second term upended foreign policy on Ukraine, raised anxiety over his closer ties to Russia, and resulted in tariffs on US allies. Talks on Monday will centre around the economy, advancing trade deals, and China. Efforts to reach an agreement to lower the G7 price cap on Russian oil, even if Trump decided to opt out, were complicated by a temporary surge in oil prices since Israel launched strikes on Iran on June 12, two diplomatic sources said. Oil prices fell on Monday on reports Iran was seeking a truce. The escalation between the two regional foes is high on the agenda, with diplomatic sources saying they hope to urge restraint and a return to diplomacy and would encourage Trump to sign a declaration. "I do think there's a consensus for de-escalation. Obviously, what we need to do today is to bring that together and to be clear about how it is to be brought about," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters. RUSSIAN ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM Further highlighting the unease among some of Washington's allies, Trump spoke on Saturday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and suggested the Russian leader could play a mediation role between Israel and Iran. French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the idea, arguing that Moscow could not be a negotiator because it had started an illegal war against Ukraine. A European diplomat said Trump's suggestion showed that Russia was very much on US minds. "In the eyes of the US, there's no condemnation for Ukraine; no peace without Russia; and now even credit for its mediation role with Iran. For Europeans, this will be a really tough G7," the diplomat said. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte will attend the summit on Tuesday. European officials said they hoped to use the meeting and next week's Nato summit to convince Trump to toughen his stance on Putin. "The G7 should have the objective for us to converge again, for Ukraine to get a ceasefire to lead to a robust and lasting peace, and in my view it's a question of seeing whether President Trump is ready to put forward much tougher sanctions on Russia," Macron said.--REUTERS

Trump Organization launches Trump Mobile smartphone service
FILE PHOTO: A supporter uses his mobile phone ahead of Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump's watch party in Palm Beach County Convention Center, in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S., November 5, 2024. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/ File Photo (Reuters) -The Trump Organization launched a self-branded mobile service and a $499 smartphone on Monday, dubbed Trump Mobile, signaling a new effort to court conservative consumers with a wireless service positioned as an alternative to major telecom providers. The new mobile venture will include call centers based in the United States and phones made in America, the organization said. The Trump family, long known for its real estate empire, luxury hotels, and golf resorts, has in recent years ventured into newer arenas including digital media and cryptocurrency. The Trump Organization, which is the main holding entity for most of the U.S. president's business ventures, said ahead of Trump's inauguration that control of the company would be handed to his children, replicating the arrangement from his first term, though concerns about potential conflicts of interest remain. COMMENTS: US MEDIA, CABLE AND TELECOM EQUITY RESEARCH, BARCLAYS "Needless to say, it is quite unprecedented for a sitting president's name to be attached to a commercial mainstream service that is regulated. None of the telecom companies have formally announced an agreement with the Trump Organization for an MVNO agreement and therefore it is not clear which entity is providing the network. "However, telecom is a highly regulated industry and the present FCC chair has been politically close to the current administration1 and one of the co-authors of Project 2025, a wish list of administration goals and potential paths to achieving its objectives. This puts telecom companies in a tough position, as it is not clear how much negotiating leverage they really have in this situation, especially given that VZ and AT&T are both still in the process of getting deal approvals. This may also result in increased scrutiny at the state level and put operators in a politically sensitive situation. It is also possible that operators have most favored nation (MFN) clauses in their existing MVNO deals – for instance with the cable companies – which could increase risk if favorable terms are extended to the Trump Organization." GIL LURIA, HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH, D.A. DAVIDSON & CO, PORTLAND: "The new wireless plan and handset announcement is the latest attempt by the Trump organization to capitalize on the President's popularity, much like Truth Social, the DJT stock listing and crypto endeavors." LAWRENCE LESSIG, LAW PROFESSOR, HARVARD "No one who has been paying attention could miss that President Trump considers the presidency a vehicle to grow his family's wealth. Maybe this example will help more come to see this undeniable truth." PAOLO PESCATORE, TMT ANALYST, PP FORESIGHT "This latest move raises more questions than answers. As always the devil is in the detail given that it is unclear around the actual commercial relationship with the telecom players and so forth. "Inevitably as seen to date, we should expect to see backlash from a slew of stakeholders. "All parties will be keeping a close eye on how this evolves." BRIAN MULBERRY, CLIENT PORTFOLIO MANAGER, ZACKS INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT "Its pointed at Apple, that's a really big downward price pressure on what Apple's trying to do." "There's been kind of an opening for this type of device, if you will, simply because not just Apple, but Samsung devices to a certain extent as well, have really gotten so expensive in the moment in time and we haven't really seen that big of a measurable increase in utility." "Most of the apps that you can download on a smartphone are just like super search kind of functions, if you will. So having that same functionality at half the price, there's a market out there for that." "I think it's going to get probably some extra attention just because it has Trump's name on it but I think the marketplace has been ripe for this type of competition." "Competition is always good for consumers and that benefits markets in general. It's going to drive people to be more productive and compete more for consumers' dollars." DAVID WAGNER, HEAD OF EQUITIES, APTUS CAPITAL ADVISORS, CINCINNATI, OHIO "I don't see much impact from Trump mobile across the industry, as half of it's addressable market is negated by political parties, and then from there, this industry already has a lot of stickiness to current providers. These companies need scale to work, and we'll see if the company can execute on the most important thing - consistency of network." (Compiled by the Global Finance & Markets Breaking News team)

Trump Media seeks SEC approval for bitcoin and ethereum ETF
FILE PHOTO: Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump gestures at the Bitcoin 2024 event in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., July 27, 2024. REUTERS/Kevin Wurm/File Photo (Reuters) -Trump Media & Technology Group is seeking to launch an exchange-traded fund that will invest in both bitcoin and ethereum, the two largest cryptocurrencies, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. This marks the second cryptocurrency ETF filing from the social media company associated with President Donald Trump in less than two weeks. If approved, the Truth Social Bitcoin ETF and the Truth Social Bitcoin & Ethereum ETF would join a crowded and competitive market already dominated by a handful of established asset managers such as BlackRock, whose iShares Bitcoin ETF has $72.5 billion in assets. "It will be a challenge for any new entrant in this market," said Bryan Armour, ETF analyst at Morningstar. "The only way to stand out will be through fees or brand." The filing for the new bitcoin and ethereum ETF does not disclose proposed fees, and Trump Media has yet to reveal fees for the bitcoin ETF. Similar products have fees of 0.12%. Trump Media representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Armour noted that the latest filing spells out a specific allocation ratio between bitcoin and ethereum. The issuer, Yorkville America Digital, said it initially anticipates holding three bitcoins for every ethereum token in the ETF. "There is little that is different about this new venture other than the way it could be marketed," said Sui Chung, CEO and chairman of CF Benchmarks. "Given Truth Social's involvement, it may very well be that (these) are marketed directly to individual investors and that this ends up getting attention from those investors in the same way that people who love their iPhones buy Apple stock."
