Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed the first penguin chicks of the year. The zoo shared adorable photos of the youngsters.
On Thursday, May 1, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland revealed that the first penguin chicks of this year's breeding season have hatched. The chicks were born to Gentoo penguin couple Muffin and Mittens.
One of the chicks pictured was born at Edinburgh Zoo on April 24, following an incubation period of between 34 and 37 days. During this time, Muffin and Mittens took turns to look after the egg.
Gentoo penguins typically mate with the same partner each year. When hatched, their chicks weigh approximately 98 grams—around the same as half of an avocado.
Visitors to Edinburgh Zoo can now spot the chicks and their parents. They will be lounging around Penguins Rock, which is the biggest outdoor penguin pool in Europe.
The chicks can also be spotted on the zoo's Penguin Cam. This is a live webcam that was created for animal lovers to keep an eye on the penguins as their eggs begin to hatch.
The Edinburgh Zoo website states: "This year, we're going behind-the-scenes of our penguin breeding season to bring you all the latest gossip from Penguins Rock!
"With pebble pinching, beaks being turned and love triangles, it's the most exciting time to be a penguin at Edinburgh Zoo.
"Make sure you're keeping up-to-date by following along on our social media channels."
Edinburgh Zoo is home to a sizeable population of gentoo penguins. There are approximately 100 of the species living at Penguins Rock.
Gentoo penguins are the third-biggest species of penguin in the world. They have the most prominent tail of all penguins, and are among the fastest underwater birds.
The species can dive to depths of up to 665 feet, and can remain underwater for around seven minutes. While swimming, they can reach speeds of up to 22 miles per hour.
According to Edinburgh Zoo, while gentoo penguins all look similar, each one "has distinct personality and they are well known by our keepers". Staff at the zoo use different coloured flipper bands to help tell them apart, with males having bands on their right flipper and females on their left.
As previously reported by the Daily Record, Edinburgh Zoo recently welcomed a "famous" TikTok capybara. Rodney arrived at the zoo in early April, joining fellow capybaras Luna and Cali.
Rodney rose to fame on TikTok in 2024, when he was born at Dartmoor Zoo in England. He became the only pup, also affectionately known as a babybara, born to mum Hoodoo.
We also reported that Edinburgh Zoo is to welcome sloth bears for first time ever with an "amazing" habitat. The zoo is working to build a habitat for the vulnerable species, after which they will be able to call the Scottish capital home.

David Laing writes letters to people who helped take record to No. 1

Sign Up When David Laing cooked up the idea to write letters to fans of his new album, he wasn't expecting to develop writer's cramp. But when the singer songwriter's latest LP cracked the charts, he proved as good as his word – by sending handwritten epistles all over the country. His new record We, Then Me, landed at No. 1 on the UK Amazon folk chart last month, meaning Laing – who works as a chef and performs under the moniker I am David Laing – had to get his writing pad out. He said: ' I didn't just want to go on the beg asking for people to buy my record. In the past I've done stupid things like telling people I'd give them a Twix if they came to a gig. 'So I figured I'd write a thank you letter to people for buying an album, because the act of writing a letter really has become a dying art. I didn't think it was going to have an impact, but people started to pre-order the album so they could get a handwritten letter, which I couldn't believe.' © Supplied Laing has now sent letters to fans as far away as Spain, and up and own the UK. 'I didn't realise how much it cost to send letters,' said the Inverclyde songwriter, who lives in the seaside town of Gourock. 'So I've been writing a batch and actually going out and hand-delivering them as far as possible, chapping people's doors or popping them through the letterbox. Every letter has been different.' And he joked: 'At times it reminds me of sitting outside the classroom writing a punishment exercise in third- year French. It's been so time consuming, but I'm loving it. I've written loads and still have some left to write. It's hilarious how it's worked out.' Getting his thoughts down on the page is something that comes naturally to 33-year-old Laing, who has been writing songs since he was a teenager and who honed his craft with pals rehearsing in the garage of the late sculptor and musician George Wyllie, one of the most significant Scottish artists of the last 50 years. His self-run label, Lonesome Boat, is inspired by Wyllie's famous Paper Boat, which he launched to pose a question about de-industrialisation on the Clyde. The singer, who studied music with Deacon Blue's keyboard player Jim Prime and Pearlfishers' frontman Davie Scott at University of the West of Scotland, has had support slots with Emeli Sande, as well as top indie acts Admiral Fallow and King Creosote. He's due to back up Edinburgh favourite Withered Hand at a hometown gig in Greenock next month. It's a change of scene from the day job, working as a chef in Gourock's riverside Cafe Continental. He said: 'All I wanted to do was to get this album into the lower reaches of some chart somewhere. So when it landed at number 68 in the UK official downloads chart, I couldn't believe it. And he admitted he decided to have fun promoting the record, which tracks the aftermath of a break-up and contains songs he refers to as 'sad bangers'. 'I've tried to be cool before, trying to emulate bands like Frightened Rabbit, but my music's not cool. Del Amitri are my favourite band, and my mates are constantly rinsing me for that because they've never been cool.' The songwriter's already working on new tunes, while basking in his unexpected success. He joked: 'I've been No. 1-selling artist, even if I was only at the top of that folk chart for a day. We told in January how the hotel shut its doors for a "complete makeover". The popular wedding venue is famed for its links to Robert Burns - featuring in one of his most celebrated poems, Tam O'Shanter. Dating back to Medieval times, the hotel is situated by the banks of the River Doon and falls within the Burns Monument Conservation Area. It was built in 1829 as a Traveller's Inn, and has seen various owners over the years. In 2022, it was bought over by the Cumnock-based RAD Hotel Group. The family-owned property has undergone extensive renovations, including this final phase that includes a newly built wraparound extension. The new extension houses Tales, a lounge bar and private dining room, and elevated public spaces - inspired by Scottish folklore. The final revamp phase completes earlier refurbishments to the hotel's grand ballroom, luxurious bedrooms and new stunning suites. Tales will be open seven days a week from noon until 10pm offering seasonal Scottish cuisine, and sweeping views of the iconic River Doon and gardens below. There is an intimate private dining room for up to 24 guests, ideal for quiet celebrations or pre-dinner gatherings or semi private spaces with picturesque views seating up to 16. Beyond the lounge, there is a 80-cover romantic dining space. Storytelling is featured throughout with local art adorning the walls, and a hand-painted Tam O' Shanter mural by artist Roderick McKenzie. TikTok megastar Khaby Lame leaves United States after getting detained by ICE amid Trump immigration crackdowns
TikToker Khaby Lame has departed the United States voluntarily after he was detained by ICE. An ICE spokesperson revealed in a statement obtained by that Lame - an Italian citizen born in Senegal - was detained by the agency on June 6 due to 'immigration violations' after entering the U.S. on April 30. Khaby - whose full name is Seringe Khabane Lame - was granted voluntary departure and has now left the country. 'U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, June 6, at the Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada for immigration violations. Lame entered the United States April 30 and overstayed the terms of his visa. Lame was granted voluntary departure June 6 and has since departed the U.S.' has representatives for Lame for comment. Conservative influencer Bo Loudon claimed to have reported Lame on June 6 and posted an alleged screenshot from the ICE website stating he was at Henderson Detention Center in Nevada. Khaby, who posts posts under the name @ and moved from Senegal to Chivasso, close to Turin in Italy aged one. He officially became an Italian citizen in 2022. The social media sensation was working as a factory worker when he was made redundant in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. He told the New York Times that he began spending hours of his free time every day posting TikTok videos - and his comedy clips soon started going viral. His most watched videos include him deriding a fellow TikToker who cuts himself free from a car door by shearing through his t-shirt - which has had more than 158 million views. Khaby films himself in the same predicament but instead of reaching for the scissors to hack his way out of the situation, he simply opens the car door to free himself - and then offers his signature shrug of exasperation. Another TikTok clip sees the joker mocking someone who uses a plastic pizza saver to cut their takeaway Italian staple dish into slices. Khaby simply neatly divides his own using his hands - and then lifts in shoulders in frustration. Much of his success appears to come from the fact he doesn't usually speak in his clips, he thinks. While the work opportunities have flooded in since his rise to the top of the TikTok rankings, he said at the time that he's not yet set for earning 'steadily' - but planned to snap up a house for his mother as soon as he could afford it. Khaby, a huge Juventus fan, has been open about his tough start in life, telling Olhar Digital last year: 'Public housing is a place to which I owe everything. They taught me education and allowed me to cultivate many bonds.' The social media comedian, who posts in English and Italian, also has no time for dramatic over-reactions - or people who offer up delayed reactions when something goes wrong, while pointless life hacks are his biggest targets. 'I came up with the idea because I was seeing these videos circulating, and I liked the idea of bringing some simplicity to it,' Khaby said to CNN last year, 'I thought of a way to reach as many people as possible. And the best way was not to speak.' The star told the US newspaper that the success behind his videos are down to the fact that he speaks a 'global language', saying he has a huge following in Brazil and South America. He now rubs shoulders with A-listers, appears on red carpets and has run the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week in 2022. Last month, he attended the star-studded Met Gala.
