Transparency and awareness are crucial to avoid health insurance claim rejections: Experts

New Delhi: The majority of health insurance claims in India are rejected due to policyholders misunderstanding the terms of their policy, failing to disclose
pre-existing health conditions
, or submitting claims that are not covered by their policy.
Experts from the insurance industry emphasise that proper awareness and transparency are essential to ensure a seamless claims process.

, highlighted that many policyholders face financial stress during medical emergencies because their health insurance claims get rejected.
He said, "Rejection of claims majorly tends to occur on account of misunderstanding of policy wording, failure to disclose pre-existing conditions, procedural failures, or claims falling out of policy purview, etc."
Jain emphasised the importance of educating customers on these issues. He also shared that India's health insurance industry has expanded, but it remains extremely low in terms of penetration, particularly in non-metro areas. Currently, non-life insurance penetration is approximately. 1 per cent compared to the global average of approximately. 3.9 per cent.
Amit Chhabra, Chief Business Officer - General Insurance at Policybazaar.com, further pointed out that claims are typically denied for specific reasons. These include a lack of understanding about policy terms, such as waiting periods and the required documents, including hospital bills or discharge summaries.
Claims can also be rejected for treatments not covered under the policy. Another common reason is when customers provide false information or fail to disclose important medical history, including pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension, or lifestyle habits like smoking or drinking alcohol.
He said, "Insurers may deny a claim if the policyholder provides false medical information or fails to disclose pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, etc."
The experts also highlighted that expanding health insurance coverage to low-income and rural populations comes with its own challenges.
Jain noted that lack of quality medical infrastructure in rural areas remains a major hurdle.
"Even with insurance, accessibility to quality healthcare remains a concern due to a shortage of hospitals, diagnostic centers, and specialists," he said. Building trust and strengthening rural healthcare infrastructure is essential for the success of insurance in these areas.
On a more positive note, Chhabra shared that over two-thirds of new health insurance buyers are now coming from beyond Tier-1 cities, showing increasing awareness and demand among rural and lower-income groups.
Both industry leaders welcomed government schemes like Ayushman Bharat.
Jain called it a "significant step" towards universal health coverage, while Chhabra noted that such schemes have directly increased health insurance awareness and purchases in the areas where they have been introduced.
Ultimately, both experts agreed that a combination of public and private efforts, customer education, and system simplification is key to improving claim experiences and increasing insurance penetration across India.
In case a health insurance claim is wrongfully rejected by an insurance provider, consumers can approach the Insurance Ombudsman, a government-appointed authority that helps resolve disputes between policyholders and insurers.
This platform allows policyholders to seek justice and claim redressal without needing to go through a lengthy legal process.

1 2 Chandigarh: In a move aimed at enhancing patient convenience, the department of radiotherapy at Sector 48 hospital is set to launch an Ayushman Bharat payment kiosk from Thursday onwards. This crucial facility, previously located at GMCH-32, will now directly serve cancer patients at the Sector 48 campus, eliminating the arduous commute between the two hospitals for financial aid. The relocation comes as a welcome relief for numerous cancer patients, many of whom are covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Previously, despite their OPD and day-care services, including chemotherapy, being shifted to Sector 48 in April, patients were still required to travel to GMCH-32 solely to access their Ayushman benefits and collect medicines. This logistical challenge often added to the already considerable physical and emotional burden of undergoing cancer treatment. Prof G P Thami, medical superintendent of GMCH, said, "We initiated services at the south campus some time back, and due to initial low footfall, the Ayushman counter was not immediately operational here. However, with the expansion of services from June 12 onwards, the counter will now be fully functional within this campus for these patients." A faculty member said, "The OPD and day care were specifically shifted from GMCH so that patients could receive chemotherapy and consult doctors for follow-ups in the same campus. But having to travel to GMCH-32 for financial aid made no sense." Following a surprise visit by Panjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria last year, who called for enhanced patient care, it was decided to utilise the Sector 48 hospital as an extension of GMCH. "We are also procuring 30 additional POS machines and plan to have them installed in the sample collection area as well so that patients need not make another queue for fee payment," said the medical superintendent. BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has decided to enrol all elderly persons above 70 years under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana (AVVY) in a campaign mode in next 10 days. In April, Union minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda had rolled out the health assurance scheme in the state along with the Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana. Of around 23 lakh targeted beneficiaries, 3.45 lakh have been enrolled under the scheme. The Health and Family Welfare department has planned to achieve 100 per cent saturation during Bikash Vahan Jatra to be organised in the state from June 12 to 21. On Tuesday, health secretary Aswathy S asked all CDMOs to prepare a detailed GP-wise plan, tagging the CSCs, village-level workers, ASHAs and ANMs.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday heaped praises on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for extending support to Delhi during the COVID-19 pandemic. She criticised the former Aam Aadmi Party government, alleging it had failed in managing the COVID-19 period and assured that the BJP government will not repeat the 'mistakes done by AAP government in the past'. Her comments came amid the re-emergence of COVID-19 cases in the country. COVID-19 cases in Delhi have been dropped by 37, bringing down the total active caseload to 691. 'The condition in which the people of Delhi spent their 11 years was quite distressing. During the COVID-19 period, the then Delhi government issued death certificates to only 97 people, whereas everyone saw the reality of overflowing crematoriums. Regrettably, those deaths were not even recorded,' said Ms. Gupta during a press conference, adding that the Centre extended a 'helping hand' during those dark days. Ms. Gupta said that the Centre provided free ration to nearly 80 lakh people at that time when the then Delhi government was 'hiding behind the closed doors'. Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, who was also present at the press conference, took on the Arvind Kejriwal government. He stated that it was the Centre that took care of Delhi when the previous AAP government left Delhi helpless during the COVID-19 period. Pointing out the development in the healthcare infrastructure in the Capital, the CM said, 'Today, AIIMS alone conducts around five lakh outpatient department (OPD) visits annually linked to Delhi, which reduces the burden on hospitals here. Corruption in the health sector was rampant during the previous government, which has now been stopped. 1,500 nurses have been permanently appointed to fill the infrastructural gaps caused by staff shortages.' CM Gupta said that the government had begun a rollout of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, enabling Delhiites to benefit from a slew of Central government's welfare programmes. She said that her administration has initiated work on 1,100 new Arogya Kendras (health centres), with 34 centres nearing completion. Their inauguration is scheduled for June 14.
