Chandigarh: In a move aimed at enhancing patient convenience, the department of radiotherapy at Sector 48 hospital is set to launch an Ayushman Bharat payment kiosk from Thursday onwards.
This crucial facility, previously located at GMCH-32, will now directly serve cancer patients at the Sector 48 campus, eliminating the arduous commute between the two hospitals for financial aid.
The relocation comes as a welcome relief for numerous cancer patients, many of whom are covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Previously, despite their OPD and day-care services, including chemotherapy, being shifted to Sector 48 in April, patients were still required to travel to GMCH-32 solely to access their Ayushman benefits and collect medicines.
This logistical challenge often added to the already considerable physical and emotional burden of undergoing cancer treatment.
Prof G P Thami, medical superintendent of GMCH, said, "We initiated services at the south campus some time back, and due to initial low footfall, the Ayushman counter was not immediately operational here. However, with the expansion of services from June 12 onwards, the counter will now be fully functional within this campus for these patients."
A faculty member said, "The OPD and day care were specifically shifted from GMCH so that patients could receive chemotherapy and consult doctors for follow-ups in the same campus. But having to travel to GMCH-32 for financial aid made no sense." Following a surprise visit by Panjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria last year, who called for enhanced patient care, it was decided to utilise the Sector 48 hospital as an extension of GMCH.
"We are also procuring 30 additional POS machines and plan to have them installed in the sample collection area as well so that patients need not make another queue for fee payment," said the medical superintendent.

Ayushman Bharat services start at private hospital in Delhi

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched Ayushman Bharat services at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. At an event to mark Cancer Survivor Month, Gupta also inaugurated a new 3D digital mammography unit and announced a major push toward preventive care for women. The hospital will offer 10,000 free cancer screenings — 5,000 mammography and 5,000 Pap smear tests — as part of a women's health campaign. The move enables eligible patients to access free cancer care under the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which provides health insurance cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year to vulnerable populations. 'This unit is specially designed for the early detection of breast cancer in women, enabling timely treatment. Equipped with fully digital technology, it ensures quick and accurate diagnosis using the latest medical equipment. Cancer is a disease that causes emotional turmoil for entire families when it strikes. However, advancements in medical science today have made early detection and effective treatment possible,' Gupta said. To improve outreach, the hospital also announced the rollout of a mobile diagnostic van equipped with mammography and lab services. It will travel across Delhi to underserved areas, offering clinical breast exams, cervical cancer screening, and lifestyle counselling. Ayushman Bharat is a flagship health scheme of the government aimed at achieving health coverage. On April 5, an MoU was inked with the Union ministry of health and family welfare to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). With this, Delhi has become the 35th state to adopt the scheme. Dr Emmanuel Rupert, managing director and group CEO of Narayana Health, said the new initiatives aim to combine advanced technology with strong community outreach to improve early detection.

Hospital launches advanced 3D mammography system

New Delhi: Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital launched an advanced 3D mammography system on Thursday to commemorate the Cancer Survivor Month. During the inauguration ceremony, attended by chief minister Rekha Gupta as the chief guest, the hospital launched a comprehensive free women's health cancer screening programme and implemented the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The newly installed 3D mammography equipment provides accurate, efficient breast screenings with minimal radiation exposure. This technology enables early detection of abnormalities, making cancer screening accessible to women across economic sections, thereby reducing instances of late-stage breast cancer diagnoses. During the mammography unit launch, the chief minister said that "this unit is specially designed for the early detection of breast cancer in women, enabling timely treatment. Equipped with fully digital technology, the unit ensures quick and accurate diagnosis using the latest medical equipment." She added that "cancer is a disease that causes emotional turmoil for entire families when it strikes. However, advancements in medical science today have made early detection and effective treatment possible. " Speaking at the event, Dr Emmanuel Rupert, managing director and Group CEO of Narayana Health, explained the significance of the new initiatives. He outlined the screening programme offering 5,000 free pap smear tests and 5,000 free mammography screenings, alongside clinical breast examinations, cervical cancer screening, and lifestyle counselling for underprivileged women and Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries. He also mentioned the introduction of a mobile diagnostic unit providing mammograms and laboratory tests to underserved areas in Delhi.
