Penang increases monthly allowance for KAFA teachers from July
GEORGE TOWN: Quran and Fardhu Ain (KAFA) class teachers in Penang will receive a monthly allowance increase of RM200 from July, bringing their total monthly allowance to RM1,500.
Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid, said KAFA headteachers will receive a higher allowance of RM1,600 compared to RM1,350 previously, marking a RM250 increment.
'During last year's state legislative assembly sitting, I announced that a comprehensive review was being carried out to strengthen KAFA education in Penang. This demonstrates the concern shown by the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) and the state government for the welfare of KAFA educators.
'To appreciate KAFA teachers in Penang, I am pleased to share two announcements: the increase in allowance, and a special maternity assistance for female KAFA teachers appointed on or after January 1 this year, who are eligible for RM1,100 per month for two months during their maternity leave,' he said in a Facebook post.
In addition, RM150,000 has been allocated to enhance training programmes for KAFA teachers in the state.
Mohamad, who is also MAINPP president, said these new measures will result in an additional financial commitment of RM4.2 million annually, raising the total KAFA allocation to RM8.5 million per year.
He also announced that all KAFA premises in Penang will return to a standardised five-day operational schedule starting July 1, a practice that had been halted for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the education sector, he said MAINPP is increasing its education budget to RM35 million for 2024 and 2025, including introducing new scholarship allocations for Polytechnic and Form Six students.
'Last month, MAINPP also allocated RM6.5 million to distribute 8,740 tablet devices to 263 primary and secondary schools. This supports the goal of digitalising education and aims to bridge the digital divide among students by 2030,' he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (Acccim) says it supports the expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) to strengthen the country's fiscal's position. But there must be careful consideration of the timing and sequencing of measures to ensure they do not unduly burden businesses, especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), it added. Ng said the expansion of the SST at a time of the evolving US tariff policy uncertainty and potential global economic slowdown would contribute to domestic economic and business conditions uncertainty. "With businesses already facing rising operating costs, implementing expanded SST could further burden businesses with increased costs. "Ultimately, increased business costs, if not absorbed, would be passed onto consumers, potentially dampen discretionary consumer spending due to higher prices of non-essential goods and a wider range of taxed services." Ng added that the service tax on rental and leasing in particular would result in higher operating cost for many businesses given a low threshold of exemption from paying service tax for MSMEs with annual sales below RM500,000. "In this regard, we appeal to the government to consider deferring the implementation of the expanded SST to a later date, when macroeconomic conditions are more certain. "It must be noted that the deferment of e-invoicing implementation for businesses with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million (Phase IV) from July 1, 2025 to Jan 1, 2026 reflects the government's acknowledgment and consideration of businesses' concerns regarding its impact on operating costs," he said. Acccim also called for a review of the threshold exemption from the SST expansion, to be raised higher to RM2 million annual sales, to relieve the burden on more micro and small businesses.

MIRI (June 12): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has urged Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas to review and expedite the distribution of flood relief aid following growing complaints from victims in his constituency who have yet to receive the assistance. In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Premier, Chiew highlighted the devastating impact of the early 2025 floods, which he described as among the worst in Sarawak's history. Thousands of residents in Miri suffered extensive property damage and income loss. He noted that while the federal government had allocated Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) amounting to RM1,000 per family in March this year, many flood victims ― both those who took shelter at Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) and those who did not ― have reported not receiving the promised aid. 'My office has received numerous complaints and grievances that, to date, many victims in the Miri parliamentary area have not received the aid. They are in urgent need of financial support to restore their homes and basic needs,' Chiew wrote in his letter. To address the issue, the MP proposed several measures for the Deputy Premier's consideration: Chiew suggested implementing a phased disbursement model, similar to the approach adopted by the Johor government, which began issuing aid in stages shortly after the disaster. He also called for the establishment of a transparent appeal mechanism for victims who may have been overlooked or have yet to receive any feedback on their applications. Additionally, Chiew expressed his willingness to work with the Sarawak Government and other MPs from the state to request additional funding from the federal government, should the current allocation prove insufficient. Aminuddin urges Selangor to expedite repairs on Genting Peras-Kuala Klawang road
SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has called on the Selangor government to expedite repair works on the Genting Peras-Kuala Klawang road that was damaged by floods four years ago. He said the road, which connects Jelebu in Negeri Sembilan and Hulu Langat in Selangor, could help ease traffic congestion, especially during festive seasons and school holidays, besides serving as an alternative route for motorists heading to Kuala Lumpur. 'The damaged section in Jelebu has already been repaired, but the part at the Selangor border isn't. I will write to the Selangor Menteri Besar urging prompt repairs. Since it was damaged in 2021, we have not been able to use the route fully until now. 'If the road is repaired, it can become an alternative route to the Klang Valley. Motorists won't have to go through Seremban, they can go via Genting Peras from Jelebu into Hulu Langat and straight to Kuala Lumpur or Selangor,' he told a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting here today. The Kuala Klawang-Genting Peras road has been closed to traffic since December 2021 after it was damaged by floods and landslides. Meanwhile, Aminuddin, who is also the Port Dickson Member of Parliament, said the state government has allocated RM1 million for a solar-powered lighting programme in rural areas, including Orang Asli villages. 'The RM2 million allocated by the Public Works Department for lighting is insufficient, as there are still poorly lit areas, so we've added another RM1 million. 'This is to ensure that attention is given to marginalised rural areas. It's part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and provide comfort and security to road users,' he said. On a separate matter, Aminuddin also extended condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the accident along the East-West Highway, near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, on Monday (June 9).
