Khelo India Beach Games 2025: Golden day for hosts Daman & Diu on Day 1 of pencak silat competition
Diu (Daman and Diu) [India], May 21 (ANI): Hosts Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu had a golden start on Day 2 of the first Khelo India Beach Games in Diu on Tuesday. The first golds of the Games were decided in pencak silat competition with Daman & Diu, winning two of the first three, according to the SAI Media Release.
Pencak silat is a form of Indonesian martial art, and it was great to see a Union Territory hemmed by the Arabian Sea excelling in the open competition at these Games. Prasanna Narendra Bendre of Daman & Diu won the gold in the senior men's tunggal (artistic) event. At the same time, Kirtana Manojkumar Acharya of the home team struck gold in the senior female category.
A third gold was decided in the pencak silat competition in the morning session at the Ghoghla Beach. In a solo event (artistic), Punjab's Aaryan won gold ahead of Odisha's Sohil Gurung. Pencak silat is a highly technical sport with points awarded on artistic forms and creativity.
Bendre is the most accomplished player in the region, with a silver and two bronze medals to his name at international events. He won the silver in the 2022 Asian championship in Jammu and Kashmir, while his two bronzes came in the 2024 Asian championship in Dubai and the 2024 world championship in Abu Dhabi.
Bendre really hopes these Khelo India Beach Games go a long way towards promoting tourism in Diu.
'That will be good for us. A better economy will help all sports and the infrastructure,' he said, as quoted from the SAI Media Release.
The beach soccer competition started on Monday and there was a spate of one-sided group matches in both men's and women's competitions. Lakshadweep recorded one of the biggest wins when their men thrashed Gujarat 19-1. Odisha women blanked Madhya Pradesh 18-0.
There are six medal sports in these Games, ending May 24: soccer, volleyball, kabaddi, open swimming, sepak takraw, and pencak silat, and two non-medal sports (mallakhamb and tug-of-war).

Ponting speaks on Gill's captaincy appointment in Tests, his best position in red-ball cricket
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said that the move to hand over Indian red-ball captaincy to youngster Shubman Gill was a 'right move' and 'leadership sits well with him' given his fine run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Gujarat Titans. Gill will be leading a new-look Indian team for five-match tour of England from June 20 onwards. The tour will kickstart the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle for India and will be their first series since the retirement of senior legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill was made the new Test captain ahead of the series, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, one of the strongest contenders for captaincy, could not land the position due to injury and workload issues. The decision to hand Gill the captaincy ahead of more senior players like Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant did not surprise Ponting, with the Australian legend believing the 25-year-old can flourish in the role at Test level. 'I actually think it is the right move,' Ponting told The ICC Review as quoted by ICC. 'I know there is a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they cannot understand why it was not Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it is pretty simple.' 'Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years, and you do not want that with a captain. You cannot have a captain coming in and missing games here and there, so I think it's the right decision.' 'Now that they have made it, it is one they have got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for a long period of time. Even just looking back at the way he has handled this current GT (Gujarat Titans) team through this IPL, I think leadership sits really well with him.' 'And the important thing for me with leadership as well as if you're a batter and you are a captain, you have to be scoring runs. And Shubman is doing that in IPL and I think the timing is right and I think you will have a good captain who'll make a lot of Test runs going forward,' he concluded. While Gill took GT to playoffs (eliminated in the eliminator after loss to Mumbai Indians) and scored 650 runs with six fifties striking at well above 155, it his Test record which has attracted scrutiny, scoring 1,893 runs in 32 Tests at an average of 35.05, with five centuries and seven fifties in 59 innings. Since his iconic 91 at Gabba to hand Australia a series loss in 2021, Gill has not touched 40 runs in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) conditions, scoring 255 in 15 innings at an average of 17.00. However, Ponting feels that if Gill is played at number four to protect him from the new ball, India can get the best out of him. 'I think (Sai) Sudarshan and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal will open the batting (in England) as Sudarshan just looks like a class player to me and technically I think he could do well at Test level,' Ponting said. 'They will have two pretty young opening batters, so they might look to go for someone with a bit more experience at No.3.' 'Whether that is KL (Rahul) or Karun (Nair) at No.3, Shubman might end up being that No.4 player, which will probably make life for him a little bit easier as a captain as well. Not having to open or bat at No.3 as a young captain might make it easier. Their top five will probably be Sudarshan, Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Karun Nair for the start of the England series,' he concluded. WTC final: Big milestones within reach for Australia's Khawaja, Cummins ahead of title clash against SA
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): As Australia's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title defence against South Africa draws closer, two of team's brightest stars in the ongoing cycle, skipper Pat Cummins and opener Usman Khawaja have big milestone to chase. Australia will be aiming to become the first-ever side to defend their ICC WTC mace as they take on Proteas in the 'Ultimate Test' from June 11 onwards at Lord's. If Australia wants to end the match with their hands on the shiny mace intact, they would need opener Khawaja to give them rock-solid starts and Cummins to pick up major wickets to send a powerful SA batting attack consisting of skipper Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, etc, packing. Khawaja, Australia's top run-getter in the cycle so far with 1,422 runs in 19 Tests and 37 innings at an average of 41.82, with two centuries and six fifties, needs just 70 runs to touch the 6,000 run mark in the long format. Currently, Khawaja has scored 5,930 runs in 80 Tests at an average of 45.61, with 16 centuries and 27 fifties in 144 innings and the best score of 232. Khawaja is the 16th-highest run-getter for Australia. In all of the WTC cycles since 2019 onwards, Khawaja is the fifth-highest run-getter overall and Australia's third-best batter behind Marnus Labuschagne (4,186 runs in 52 Tests with 11 centuries and 22 fifties) and Steve Smith (4,072 runs in 52 Tests with 13 tons and 17 fifties). In the ongoing cycle, he has taken a massive 73 scalps in 17 Tests at an average of just above 24, with best figures of 6/91 and five five-wicket hauls, standing just behind Jasprit Bumrah of India (77 scalps in 15 Tests at an average of 15.09). In all of WTC cycles since 2019, Cummins has been the second-highest wicket-taker, with 200 scalps at an average of 22.63, best figures of 6/91 and nine five-wicket hauls. He stands behind spinner Nathan Lyon (210 scalps in 50 Tests at an average of 26.85). "India will replace the skill side of it...": Ponting on team's transition from Rohit, Virat
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed that while replacing legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would be a hard thing to do in Test format, they have the quality and skill in their players to cope with this massive task better than other teams. The five-test tour of England, starting June 20 at Leeds and lasting until August 2025, is set to be a heavy one for fans and players alike. With senior stars Rohit and Virat having retired from the longest format of the game, the onus lies on the Shubman Gill-led new-look Indian side to prove themselves away from home in tough English conditions and ensure that Indian cricket is safe. Several newer talents and domestic cricket/Indian Premier League (IPL) performers like Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan have earned a ticket to the UK as a part of the main squad. Speaking in the ICC Review as quoted by ICC, Ponting said, 'It is always very hard to replace players like that that have been around for so long, that have played that much Test cricket. But if any country can do it and do it quickly, India can because of the amount of young talent that they have.' 'I have seen it firsthand for 10 years around the IPL, and we have seen the emergence of (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and these sorts of guys who have come into international cricket with India and done really well pretty much straight away.' 'The skill side of it is one thing to replace, and I think India will replace the skill side of it easily enough, but the experience is the big thing that will be missing for them. So now, even with a young captain with Shubman Gill, they will still have some experience with KL Rahul and (Jasprit) Bumrah and these sort of guys.' 'But I think if you look at a rebuilding sort of phase, I think India can cope with it better than most other teams,' he concluded. Rohit bid adieu to Test cricket last month, and a few days later, Virat bid his farewell to the format with a heartfelt note on Instagram. Rohit made his Test debut against West Indies in November 2013 and since then, Rohit featured in 67 Tests for India, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties, his best score being 212. He is the 16th-highest run-getter in the format for India. After years of up and down performances, particularly away, the start of the ICC World Test Championship as a proper tournament revived his Test career as he went on to have a prolific run as an opener. In 40 Tests during WTC history, he made 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. His best score was 212. He is India's top run-getter, century maker in WTC history and overall at 10th among top run-getters. Whereas, Virat first represented India in Tests against West Indies in 2011 and in the coming years, became the country's biggest ambassador for the longest format, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 appearances, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. He is the fourth-highest run-getter for India in Tests. He also made a massive impact as India's most successful Test captain, winning 40 out of 68 matches, leading them to numerous iconic wins overseas. As a leader, he developed a massive roster of fast bowling talent for India and was an advocate for top-level fitness and inculcated in the team a 'win at all costs' attitude and ability to take on their opponents head-on.
