Kharge slams Centre's Gaza vote abstention at UNGA, says India's foreign policy 'in shambles'
New Delhi: A day after India abstained in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) from a vote on a draft resolution that demanded an 'immediate, unconditional and permanent' ceasefire in Gaza, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that "our Foreign Policy is in shambles" and added that "PM Modi must now take a call on his EAM's repeated blunders and set some accountability."
As Israel continues to bomb Gaza which has already killed more than 50,000 people and displaced millions in the already torn area, the 193-member UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to adopt the resolution introduced by Spain that demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire.
Taking to X, Congress President said, "It is now increasingly evident that our Foreign Policy is in shambles. Perhaps, PM Modi must now take a call on his EAM's repeated blunders and set some accountability. 149 countries voted for a UNGA resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. India was only one of the 19 countries that abstained. We virtually stand isolated by this step."
Reiterating the Congress' statement that condemned the brutal attacks by Hamas on the people of Israel on October 8, 2023, Kharge said, "We have consistently condemned the indiscriminate actions that included a siege of the Gaza Strip and bombings in it as 60,000 people have died and there is a widespread and horrific humanitarian crisis."
Taking a jibe at Indian Foreign Policy which now stands on the crossroads as New Delhi continues to call for talks and diplomacy between Israel and Palestine while routinely skipping the votes at such crucial drafts, Kharge asked, "Have we abandoned India's consistent stand advocating for a ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East and West Asia?"
"This stance is deeply rooted in our long-standing tradition of Non-Alignment and moral diplomacy, through which India has always championed justice and peace in international conflicts", he added.
"On October 19, 2023, itself, the Indian National Congress had called for an immediate ceasefire and for humanitarian assistance to the beleaguered and dispossessed people of Gaza. India cannot stand by silently or passively while the region faces horrific violence, humanitarian catastrophe, and increasing instability", he added.

5 foreign universities to offer courses at ‘significantly reduced costs': CM Devendra Fadnavis
MUMBAI: Indian students dreaming of a cheaper global education have a boon coming their way. In a first, the University Grants Commission on Saturday issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) to five well-known international universities to set up full-fledged campuses in the country. These campuses will all be in Navi Mumbai, creating the country's first international education hub. This announcement was made by CM Devendra Fadnavis at the 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' event at the Taj Hotel, where union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan was present along with Maharashtra higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil, UGC chairman Vineet Joshi, bureaucrats, diplomats from the UK, Australia, USA and Italy and representatives from the five universities. Fadnavis said that the universities, set up under the National Education Policy (NEP), would bring 'world-class education at significantly reduced costs' to students—25 to 30 percent of what they pay to study abroad. 'The campuses will be set up in the area around the Navi Mumbai International Airport,' he said. 'The government's larger goal is to have at least 10 international universities in this region.' The chief minister said the proposed education hub was already well equipped with the necessary transport infrastructure, including the Atal Setu and other transport networks. 'This initiative is expected to give Mumbai, known mainly for its industries, finance, and entertainment, a new identity as an academic destination,' he said. When asked whether the universities would have scholarships, Fadnavis said it was up to them and depended on their policies. 'The government has not asked for any scholarships from them,' he said. A senior officer from UGC stated that UGC regulations for foreign universities had a provision of need-based scholarships, but the universities would have the autonomy to decide about these. The CM also spoke about a recent MoU signed between the University of Western Australia and Gondwana University in Gadchiroli. The partnership will focus on mining education and training, an area where Australia has strong expertise. 'The collaboration will play an important role in developing Gadchiroli as a mining hub and creating a skilled workforce for this sector,' he said. Pradhan said that the international education hub was a major step towards realising the vision of a 'developed India by 2047'. 'Mumbai is the financial capital and also the city of dreams,' he said. 'With this initiative, it is also set to become a global education capital.' The minister emphasised that India had a rich tradition in education in ancient times and this project was a part of the country's effort to 'reclaim that legacy'. Speaking about NEP 2020, Pradhan said that the policy allowed foreign universities to open campuses in India, and likewise, leading Indian institutions could also establish campuses abroad. He noted that some institutions like IIT, Madras, the IIMs, and Symbiosis University had already begun expanding internationally. The event also included a moment of tribute for the victims of the recent tragedy in Ahmedabad, adding a sombre note to the otherwise celebratory gathering.

First foreign trip since Operation Sindoor: Canada ties in focus as PM attends G7 next week; Trump meet likely
The Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada next week may present an opportunity for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet US President Donald Trump , in what could be their first engagement in person since India's military action against Pakistan last month in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack . A possible meeting between the two leaders assumes significance against the backdrop of Trump's repeated claims that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during the recent conflict, an assertion that India has dismissed. Modi will travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17, at the invitation of Canadian PM Mark Carney, for what would be his sixth consecutive participation in a G7 summit. He will hold many bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 summit, as per an external affairs ministry announcement. Live Events If he meets Trump, he is expected to focus on cross-border terrorist infrastructure, which was India's pinpointed target during the action against Pakistan from May 7-10 under Operation Sindoor , said sources. Trump has spoken at least a dozen times since then, claiming he helped avert an escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours by using trade as an instrument of negotiation. India has, however, maintained that the US played no such role in what remains essentially a bilateral matter. Indian officials have clarified that the US was in touch with India after Operation Sindoor but in no way mediated the ceasefire and there was no discussion on trade. Trump's administration's alleged links with Pakistan military have cast a shadow over ties with India.

Haryana chief minister criticizes Punjab government for doing petty politics over important issues.
Ludhiana: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt in Punjab, accusing it of politicising essential issues such as drinking water, drug control, and farm subsidies, instead of addressing them. His remarks came during a campaign visit to this city in support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jiwan Gupta ahead of the June 19 Ludhiana West byelection. Speaking at a press conference, Saini criticised the AAP-led Punjab govt for allegedly denying Haryana its share of drinking water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). "When Haryana only seeks water to drink, this govt, despite Punjab being the land of great Gurus, has turned it into a political drama," he said. Saini also accused AAP of using the war on drugs as a distraction. "Instead of catching real culprits, they are doing theatrics to cover up their failures," he said, adding that both AAP and Congress had betrayed Punjab's voters — Congress for five years, and AAP for the last three and a half. On the issue of minimum support price (MSP), Saini claimed that while Punjab failed to offer it to farmers, the Haryana got had provided subsidies on various crops under central government schemes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "We've implemented every major central scheme — from Ayushman Bharat to Ujjwala — and delivered results," he said, citing 13 lakh free electricity connections, 15 lakh free gas cylinders, and more than ₹2.5 crore in medical reimbursements. BJP eyes Punjab foothold Campaigning for BJP's Jiwan Gupta, Saini predicted a decisive win in Ludhiana West. "People here are tired of AAP and Congress. This time, Ludhiana West will elect a BJP MLA and send a message across Punjab that change is coming," he said, after meeting with industrialists and local residents. Black flags greet CM convoy Saini's visit was marred by protests as black flags were waved at his convoy. Protesters raised slogans such as "Punjab de paania de chor murdabad" (Death to the thieves of Punjab's waters). Police cleared the area to allow the cavalcade to pass. The Aam Aadmi Party, in a statement issued later that day, said the protests reflected public anger over Haryana's alleged historical exploitation of Punjab's water resources. "Hundreds turned out to oppose the CM's visit, expressing frustration over Haryana and BJP's continued attempts to loot Punjab's water," the statement read. AAP accused the Haryana govt of misusing Punjab's BBMB allocation and praised the Mann-led administration for standing firm on Punjab's water rights. "While earlier govts stayed silent, the Mann govt is working to expand canal water for irrigation and ensure optimal water management," the statement added. As the bypoll looms, water-sharing has emerged as a key campaign issue in Punjab, with voters watching closely which parties promise to safeguard the state's agricultural interests.
