Bengaluru Airport ramps up traffic surveillance with new CCTV network across junctions
In a bid to tackle increasing traffic violations and ensure commuter safety, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has teamed up with Bengaluru Traffic Police to install a network of CCTV cameras at all four key traffic junctions around the airport campus. The initiative aims to closely monitor and take action against traffic offenders.

In a public statement, the airport authorities said, 'Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, in collaboration with @blrcitytraffic, has launched camera surveillance at all four traffic signals within the BLR Airport campus. All traffic offences will now be closely monitored, captured and addressed with appropriate action. Let's all do our part to drive responsibly and be mindful of everyone's safety.'
This move comes as part of a larger city-wide push to expand surveillance infrastructure. Over the last 15 months, Bengaluru has witnessed a remarkable surge in CCTV installations, with more than 3 lakh new cameras added since January 2024 alone.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, in an earlier interaction with the media, said, 'In January 2024, we had around 2.32 lakh CCTV cameras. We took it upon ourselves to scale that up to five lakh—and we've now surpassed it.'
As part of this technological expansion, every installed camera is being geo-tagged. This enables authorities to track the precise location of surveillance devices across a wide range of areas—from residential layouts and commercial zones to schools, hospitals, and highway intersections.

The video data is integrated into the Multi-Agency Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (MCCTNS) platform. This allows police to rapidly retrieve footage from the nearest cameras in the event of a crime or accident, significantly reducing response time.
'All cameras are mapped on our digital portal. This makes it easier for our teams to conduct real-time assessments and improve response time,' Commissioner Dayananda said.

CM Siddaramaiah also expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. "A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured. Eleven people died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident." RCB finally ended an 18-year wait for the coveted IPL trophy, defeating Punjab Kings by six wickets in the finals of IPL 2025, held on Tuesday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The stampede, which claimed 11 lives during RCB's celebration of their first IPL title in 18 years, has triggered sharp criticism over the timing and handling of the event. Citing hospital records and the movement of bodies to two mortuaries for postmortems, the report states that ten additional deaths were recorded between 4:15 pm and 5:15 pm across three central Bengaluru hospitals while the public felicitation was still underway. A grand ceremony honouring the team was held from 4 pm to 5 PM pm the Vidhana Soudha, attended by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and other cabinet ministers. The overlap between the fatalities and the ongoing celebrations has since become a major point of controversy in Karnataka. Adding to the controversy, the Karnataka government told the court that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) 'invited the whole world" to their June 4 victory parade without obtaining formal permission. The government said that although the event was widely promoted to RCB's 28 lakh social media followers, the organisers only submitted an intimation letter via the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) on June 3 at 6:30 PM—just hours before the match that confirmed their IPL win. Despite the expected turnout, RCB made a public announcement at 11:30 PM on the same night and followed it with a tweet at 7:01 AM on June 4, outlining the parade route from Vidhana Soudha to M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Citing these details in court, the state argued that no official permission was granted for such a large-scale gathering and held RCB accountable for violating standard protocol.
