Yavatmal's UPSC Topper Among 1,200 Girls Introduced to Karate, Women's Laws, and Cyber Awareness
Nagpur: UPSC topper Adiba Anam had some idea about self-defence, but a two-day camp organised by Yavatmal police for young women aged between 15 and 30 years changed her perspective.
Introduced to the basics of martial arts, Adiba now wants to incorporate self-defence aspects, along the lines of SP Yavatmal Kumar Chintha, when she joins the administrative services soon.
Adiba, the All India 142nd rank holder, was among the 1,200 young women introduced to martial arts, laws related to women, especially Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), cyber awareness, and health and hygiene in two-day camps organised by Yavatmal police at their headquarters.
This was part of their 'Operation Prasthan' — a people's connect programme for community policing.
Apart from Adiba, among the most discussed participants of the five camps held since April 21 were a mother-daughter duo, who came from an interior village, Murdhoni in Wani, to attend the camp. Priya Falke and her daughter, Manavi, like others from the interiors, were offered free bus travel to reach Yavatmal city, where they participated in the two-day free residential camp.
"I had no clue what to do when someone attacked you. But now, my daughter and I are confident to face such undue advances anywhere," said Priya, adding she would now train 100 girls in her village so that they too gain such confidence. Donning the black tracksuits offered free by Yavatmal police to the participants, Manavi also exudes confidence like her mother.
SP Chintha said the concept was to empower women to ensure they are not only physically enabled but also mentally prepared to face any atrocities against them with confidence.
"After two hours of field training, the participants are exposed to the theories of law and other subjects for awareness," he said.
"The camp was free for all, with experts from different fields addressing them," said Chintha, adding the sixth camp would commence on Friday. "The camps are receiving an overwhelming response as we are being approached from various interior places too. We are providing them free bus, uniform, and lodging facilities for the two-day camp," said Chintha, a former Gadchiroli cop who participated in several encounters with Maoists during his stint in the tribal-dominated district.

Teenage Bike Thief Caught Red-Handed by Ganeshpeth Police
Nagpur: A teenager, married at only 13 years of age, and already entrenched in a life of crime, was apprehended by Ganeshpeth police for masterminding multiple motorcycle thefts. Driven by the thrill of joyrides with friends and the lure of quick cash, the teenager earned notoriety as a prolific bike thief, keeping the city's police on high alert. The Ganeshpeth Police, led by senior inspector Machhindra Pandit, recovered five stolen motorcycles, abandoned across various locations after joyrides, following the suspect's rounding up on June 5. The action occurred when the police team, including head constable Sameer Shaikh and Vaibhav Jadhav — who had earlier nabbed the same teenager — spotted him acting suspiciously near a parking slot at Central Ganeshpeth bus stand. The case is now being probed by investigation officer, sub-inspector Malhari Doiphode. Caught preparing to steal another bike, the juvenile, identified as a child in conflict with law, confessed to stealing a black Honda CB Shine (MH 49 BJ 8039) from Bajeria. Further interrogation led to the recovery of four additional stolen motorcycles: a Hero Honda Splendor Plus, a Honda Splendor Plus, a Honda Splendor, and a Pulsar 220, collectively valued at approximately Rs1.85 lakh. The case originated from a complaint filed by Pravin Gaudiya, a 41-year-old Bajeria resident, who reported his Honda CB Shine missing on May 25. The theft occurred after Gaudiya parked and locked his motorcycle outside his home on May 24, only to find it gone the next morning. The Ganeshpeth police registered the case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on June 6 and launched an investigation. The teenager's early marriage and exposure to criminal influences fuelled his descent into delinquency, said police. His passion for reckless rides and peer pressure played a significant role in his criminal activities. The police are now probing potential links to a larger theft network. The juvenile was handed over to authorities for proceedings under the Juvenile Justice Act. This case underscores the rising issue of juvenile crime in Nagpur, prompting calls for community intervention and stronger preventive measures.

The latest episode celebrates the remarkable success of Shakti Dubey, who brought national recognition to the state and the police fraternity through her perseverance and grit. Speaking candidly, Shakti revealed that 2024 marked her fifth attempt at the UPSC exam. "There were many times I felt like giving up. I even considered choosing another career path," she admitted. "But it was my mother who constantly reminded me why I wanted this job. Her words reignited my motivation each time I stumbled." Giving practical advice to UPSC aspirants, she said, "Do your homework before jumping into UPSC prep. Understand the syllabus thoroughly—what to read, how much to read, and which books to rely on. Also, analyse how much weightage is given to the mains and interview, and align your priorities accordingly. NCERT books and previous years' question papers are vital resources." Importantly, Shakti urged aspirants to always have a backup plan. "Only about one percent of candidates succeed in UPSC. The rest don't. So always have a second career option in mind. That way, failure won't break you—you can still move ahead in life with clarity and confidence," she added. The episode also explores other aspects of Shakti's journey, including how she stayed motivated after repeated failures, her optional subjects, her emotional state on result day, and the values she hopes to bring into her role as a civil servant.
