World's Largest Container Ship MSC IRINA Arrives At Vizhinjam Seaport
The world's largest container ship, MSC IRINA, on Monday arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The berthing process for the vessel has begun at the port.
MSC IRINA is recognised as the world's largest container vessel by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity.
Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is managed by the Adani Group, was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The arrival of MSC IRINA marks a significant milestone for the newly opened port.
The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field.
Explicitly designed to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency.
This vessel will be visiting a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade.
The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year.
It sails under the Liberian flag and is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking.
Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.
The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only highlights the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry.

Centre approves IIM Guwahati, Bill to be introduced in Parliament this month: Assam CM
Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Union cabinet has approved the setting up of Indian Institute of Management (IIM)Guwahati and a Bill in this regard will be introduced in Parliament later this month. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker Sarma on Thursday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet for approving the IIM Guwahati campus. The permanent campus will be set up at Palasbari near Guwahati. He added that the institute will be mentored by IIM Ahmedabad , and efforts are being made to begin classes from this year at a temporary campus. After years of persuasion Assam was given an Indian IIM. Sarma, when he was Education minister in the Congress government earlier, has been advocating and persuading for an IIM in Guwahati. There is an IIM in Shillong. Sarma stated in X earlier, 'As evident from the letters, the swift transformation from idea to execution illustrates the power of a Double Engine government. My gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri@narendramodiJi and Hon'ble Education Minister Shri@dpradhanbjpJi for their cooperation.' He stated, 'Sharing a BIG NEWS! Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri@narendramodi ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, Nat'l Law Univ & now IIM. Over the last 18 months, we presented a strong case to the Hon'ble Education Minister Shri@dpradhanbjp Ji and the Education Ministry. Assam offered premier land and logistical support for this endeavour. Now IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the upcoming IIM in Guwahati'. He said that this will be a game changer for Assam, making the State an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfill our economic aspirations. 'I envisage these premiere institutes to collaborate among themselves and industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education'. In a letter to Prime minister Narendra Modi on April 19 ,2023, Sarma said, 'I would like to submit that at present, there are 20 IIMs across the country with Shillong being the lone city from Northeastern Region to be home to one. Assam being the leading State in the region and a hub of diverse industrial sectors such as oil, tea, coal, petrochemicals etc., the lack of a premier management institute is acutely felt. Due to the Government of India's steps to promote economic development of the North Eastern Region and the Act East Policy, Assam has huge potential to be a hub of modern management education on an international level, being close to the South Asian countries. An IIM will attract elite corporate organizations to invest in human talent and encourage investments.' He added, 'Further, establishment of an IIM in addition to |IIT Guwahati and the newly established AlIMS Guwahati, will enable these premier institutions to work in tandem in various fields. In this connection, as sought by the Ministry of Education, the State Government has already committed to provide land, free from all encumbrances, in an area with good infrastructure, industrial linkages and located within an hour distance from the airport and well connected with trains. The State Government will erect the boundary wall. Accordingly, we have shortlisted two sites for the possible location of the IIM. In this backdrop, I request your kind intervention for setting up.

India inducts South Korea-built LPG carrier Sahyadri
A day before the 79th Independence day, the Shipping Ministry inducted Sahyadri, a very large gas carrier (VLGC), which will transport LPG between the Persian Gulf and India, securing a vital energy lifeline. The vessel, named after the mountain range along India's western coast, is now part of the fleet of state-run Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. It is after a gap of eight years that an Indian public sector unit has acquired a VLGC. The ministry was keen on meeting the August 15 deadline, so that the tricolour could symbolically be hoisted atop the ship by August 15. The hoisting was carried out atop the vessel at Hamad port in Qatar on Thursday in the presence of the Indian crew of the ship, who were there to take charge of it. Officials said the acquisition is a step towards building a self-reliant, globally competitive shipping sector and reducing dependence on foreign tonnage for strategic cargo. 'Every addition to our fleet is a step towards a stronger, self-reliant maritime India. With the growing fleet of Indian flagged vessels, we are moving towards enabling our maritime goal of becoming Atmanirbhar and propel the economic growth towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' said Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. 'It is also a matter of pride that this addition comes as the nation celebrates its 79th Independence Day.' Sahyadri meets stringent international safety and environmental standards, said a ministry note. 'The South Korea built 225-metre-long, 36-metre-wide carrier can transport up to 82,000 cubic metres of LPG. The induction raises SCI's deadweight tonnage to 5.2 million and its owned fleet to 57 vessels, including crude and product tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, gas carriers and offshore vessels,' it said. The acquisition is the first under a July agreement to purchase two VLGCs of the same capacity. The second vessel, to be renamed Shivalik, will join later this financial year.

Federer and Infantino to the rescue? How Switzerland is counting on sports diplomacy after getting hit by US tariffs
With the United States slapping a massive 39 per cent import duty on Switzerland – famous for the Alps, chocolate, luxury watches and 'cheese' – the nation is turning to tennis legend Roger Federer and FIFA president Gianni Infantino for help. Switzerland will be hoping Roger Federer and Gianni Infantino are able to convince US President Donald Trump against placing a whopping 39 per cent import duty on their goods. Reuters US President Donald Trump has once again sent shockwaves around the globe. His latest tariff strike has world leaders scrambling, and Switzerland – famous for the Alps, chocolate, luxury watches and 'cheese' – is in the firing line. The US has slapped a massive 39 per cent import duty on Swiss goods. And the usually calm, neutral nation is now urgently looking for a way out. Their plan? Not the usual round of political talks and negotiations, but calling in two of their biggest sporting heavyweights to work their magic. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Fifa boss Gianni Infantino and tennis legend Roger Federer have been asked to open informal backchannels with President Trump. Why the Swiss are turning to Federer and Infantino for help And why these two, one might wonder? Two reasons – Infantino has Trump's friendship and Federer has global celebrity charm. Together, they will get him to ease the pressure. But with Trump's track record, will he listen? Or will Switzerland just end up with an even bigger bill? 'If personalities who know him have a conversation with him, we're not against it. That's not a strategy we can officially pursue,' said Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. In other words, Switzerland wants Federer and Infantino to do what they fear they can't. And honestly, it's not their worst idea. When Federer speaks, the world listens. And given Trump's fondness for sports, he might at least give them a listen. Then there's Gianni Infantino. His position as Fifa president is impressive. But it's his personal friendship with Trump that's priceless here. A friendship that's only grown warmer since the Fifa Club World Cup. Infantino even handed Trump the inaugural Club World Cup trophy. Maybe now he can cash in that favour: 'I gave you the trophy — now how about you drop the tariffs?' If he pulls it off, Infantino might just earn himself a 'noble mediator' title. But Switzerland's up against a very unusual political figure. They're not the first to try a sporting shortcut with Trump. And history shows it's risky. How a similar move backfired for South Africa Earlier this year, South Africa's president Cyril Ramaphosa brought golf stars Ernie Els and Retief Goosen into the Oval Office, hoping to smooth relations. This was after Trump accused South Africa of 'white genocide.' The meeting was all smiles, but days later, Trump hit them with 30% tariffs. Two elite golfers — playing Trump's own sport — couldn't move him. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD So the odds are stacked here for infantino and federer… Infantino's friendship gives him an edge. And Federer? He brings a mix of charm, global respect, and household-name status. And since retiring, Federer has even taken up golf — another subtle link that could help break the ice with Trump. Charm, diplomacy, and sportsmanship — Federer's got it all. But will it be enough to sway the most unpredictable president in modern history? Switzerland's gamble is clear – bypass the podiums and policy papers, and employ the most unusual strategy. It's a high-stakes match — with tariffs, trade, and diplomacy all on the line. Federer and Infantino can save Switzerland millions. If so – they'll prove that sometimes, the right serve or the perfect pass can be just as powerful as any political handshake. That is of course should Federer and Infantino choose to accept this mission. Watch the full episode here: STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
