Well, it's popular Welsh cafe, Brød, a Danish bakery that has four locations in south Wales where they sell a selection of yummy Danish pastries, cakes and bread. BBC's new comedy crime drama, Death Valley, aired for the first time this month with the opening episode airing on Sunday, May 25. The show follows Detective Janie Mallowan, played by Gwyneth Keyworth and former TV detective John Chapel, played by Timothy Spall as they become partners, fighting crime in Mountain Ash. In one scene, Timothy Spall is seen enjoying a macchiato in Brød Bakery in Penarth, one of the Danish bakeries located in south Wales, which was founded in 2015 by Danish photographer-turned-baker Betina Skovbro. Brød now has three other spots across Cardiff including, Newport Road, the OG in Pontcanna and Cardiff Bay. Betina Skovbro moved to Wales in 1998 (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne ) Betina first arrived in Cardiff in 1998, bringing her grandfather's love of baking with her to feed the people of Wales delicious sweet and savoury treats. She told WalesOnline: "I went freelance as a photographer for 18 years and then I decided that I needed to have better bread in this country so I decided to give it a go. Some stupid idea turned into reality." Named after the Danish word for bread, Brod's stores are filled with fresh pastries and goods made that morning – with the bakers starting weekend shifts at midnight and working until the small hours. Gareth Thomas lays bare extent of trolling and death threats after HIV diagnosis
Gareth Thomas has revealed the heartbreaking comments he has received after opening a pub with his husband following his HIV diagnosis Former rugby player Gareth Thomas invited his family to share his debut garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, admitting his HIV diagnosis is "hard for my whole family". Husband Stephen Williams-Thomas finds he is praised as a "great man" for marrying the star. "It's like you're a faulty good," says Gareth, speaking candidly. The couple run a pub together, Ty-risha in Bridgend, but Gareth, 50, endures negative comments, including about him helping in the kitchen. "Somebody said, 'I'm not going to come there for food in case Gareth peels the chips.' And I was like, well, why wouldn't he come here? 'In case he cuts his finger.' "That's a discriminative comment, but purely just because of his ignorance and lack of knowledge." However, Gareth, whose Tackle HIV Challenging Stigma garden features at the flower show, says he remains "hands on" behind the bar. "I'm fully hands on," he says. "There's interaction with society, the bar is almost like a security. "I can pull the perfect pint, though some people actually said to me that it looked like a map of the world when I tried to do a shamrock." The Welsh rugby union star was diagnosed with HIV in 2012, and revealed to the Sunday Mirror that he had contracted the virus in an emotional interview in 2019. But he finds he endures more discrimination every time he opens up about the issue. Gareth has received death threats for his efforts to reduce the stigma of HIV, but sees his role as a campaigner to persevere. "People scream in my face - but I absorb that discrimination, and I see it as an opportunity for them to learn," he says."If somebody comes to you with hatred and you go back around with hatred, then it's never solved. "Hatred can create more hatred. If somebody comes to me with hatred and I come back with love, then their hatred is almost diminished. "And I don't want to be that person who comes back with hatred. I want to represent the community." He continues: "Sadly, we live in an environment where I have to assess my environment every day. Thank God I've got my family's support. "But I put everything into playing rugby. So I put everything into being a campaigner as I did through my rugby. I have that mentality. If you make me the underdog, then I'll come back until you make me the favourite. I want to be an example." His parents and husband, Stephen, visited his garden for a VIP event last week. Gareth said it was important for him to include running water, to replicate the effect nature had on him when he was struggling with his diagnosis. Ceredigion was hailed a 'hotbed of culinary wizardry' by the newspaper after they visited the county in west Wales, finding a mix of local food and drink hotspots. The account highlighted the plethora of top class options available in the county as well as the dining scene in and around Cardigan town, including bakeries Crwst and Bara Menyn, the Brat supperclub at Ffrorest Ffarm, Caws Teifi and also Llys Meddyg, just over the border in Newport, Pembrokeshire. Attributing the Michelin-starred Brat resdidency at Fforest to the quality of local produce, farmers, fishermen and growers that exists in this part of Wales,' writer Ajesh Patalay says: ""Parry's residence is testament to the quality of local produce, farmers, fishermen and growers that exists in this part of Wales. "It also speaks to the vibrant dining scene that's grown up in and around Cardigan over recent years." Hailing from Anglesey, founder of Brat, Tomos Parry, served up cockles and laverbread, sweetbreads and leeks at Fforest farm in Cardigan earlier this year, and he'he's back for the Brat x Mountain x Fforest supper club in September. Cardigan is also home to an award-winning café and popular brunch spot, Crwst, that has been open since 2018. Award-winning Crwst's sweet treat (Image: Portia Jones ) Crwst, founded by husband and wife Osian and Catrin Jones, serves fresh baked goods as well as signature dishes including their seaweed hash browns. The café serves a wide selection of fresh doughnuts made at an offsite bakery on Bath House Road in the heart of Cardigan. Nearby is Bara Menyn, opened by Aberystwyth-born writer Jack Smylie Wild with his family ten years ago. He told The FT: 'When we opened Bara Menyn in 2015, people thought we were crazy: 'You can't open a sourdough bakery in Cardigan: they do good bread in Aldi.' Now people drive all the way from Aberystwyth.' The café is still serving fresh baked goods after a decade of the Ceredigion native opened the location a decade ago. Also praised in the piece were Pizza Tipi, Michelin and Good Food Guide beloved, Yr Hen Printworks and Templebar Cafe and Farmshop in Nevern. Not only does Cardigan have a great supply of culinary establishments it is also known for its rich history, art and culture.
