Toronto Star3 days ago
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler erased a four-shot deficit in five holes and then delivered a haymaker on the daunting par-3 17th by chipping in from 82 feet for birdie that carried him to victory Sunday in the BMW Championship for his fifth PGA Tour title of the year.
Scheffler closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-shot victory and became the first player since Tiger Woods (2006-07) to win at least five times on the PGA Tour in consecutive years.

Rory McIlroy backs 'clean slate' season finale format change

MIAMI — Rory McIlroy is backing the format change that will see all 30 players tee off as equals as they battle for the FedEx Cup in the PGA Tour's Tour Championship starting on Thursday. Article content A $10-million winner's cheque will be on offer at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta for the climax of the season-ending playoff series, with world number one Scottie Scheffler starting as the man to beat. Article content Article content Article content But unlike previous seasons, Scheffler will be starting on even par with the rest of the field following the decision to scrap the controversial 'starting strokes' format. Article content Last year, Scheffler started the Tour Championship with a two-shot advantage at 10 under to reflect his season-long dominance of the FedEx standings. Article content That system was eliminated for the 2025 tournament however following feedback from fans, with tour officials stating in May that a conventional 72-hole strokeplay tournament offered the 'most straightforward and engaging format'. Article content Masters champion McIlroy said Tuesday he backs the move to switch formats. Article content 'It has a different feel,' McIlroy said. 'Any one of the 30 has a chance to win the FedExCup this year, which is obviously a lot different than it's been in previous years. Article content 'It's a clean slate for everyone, and it's a great opportunity for one of the guys that maybe wasn't a huge part of the season to put their hand up and have a chance to win the big prize at the end of the year. Article content Article content 'It's also a great opportunity for some of the guys that have had great years to sort of rubber stamp the season a little bit and end on a really, really positive note. I think there's still a lot to play for this week.' Article content McIlroy said he had been in a minority who 'didn't hate' the starting strokes format. Article content 'I thought that the player that played the best during the course of the season should have had an advantage coming in here,' he said. Article content 'But the majority of people just didn't like the starting strokes.' Article content McIlroy, who served on the PGA Tour's Player Advisory Council (PAC) which had helped implement the format changes, said switching to a match play format had been considered but discarded. Article content 'Match play was on the table, and that got canned for this year,' McIlroy said. Article content 'I think it's just hard for the players to reconcile that we play stroke play for every week of the year but then the season-ending tournament is going to be decided by match play.' Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — The Italian Soccer Coaches' Association is pushing for Israel to be suspended from international competition over the war in Gaza. Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.' The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended. 'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes. 'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.' Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14. 'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said. The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium. Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month. 'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.' ___ AP soccer:

Fluminense says goalkeeper Fabio has broken Peter Shilton's record for most soccer games played

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian club Fluminense says goalkeeper Fabio has broken the world record for most competitive soccer matches played with his 1,391st appearance, surpassing the mark set by former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton in the 1990s. Fluminense said the 44-year-old Fabio pulled ahead of Shilton in the team's 2-0 win over Colombian club America in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores, South America's top club competition. Fluminense advanced 4-1 on aggregate. Fabio was honored by his club after the match at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro with a commemorative plaque and an image marking the record. Fluminense's goalkeeper wore a patch mentioning the milestone. South America's soccer governing body CONMEBOL also congratulated him on reaching 1,391 career appearances. 'It is a tremendous satisfaction to reach this record wearing the Fluminense jersey, which opened the doors for me,' Fabio said. 'Now it's time to keep playing and strive for new achievements with every game.' There is no single official soccer body that tracks players' appearances across domestic and international competitions, which makes record-keeping complicated and subject to disputes about what counts as a competitive match. However, Shilton was widely seen as the record-holder for most competitive games played. Guinness World Records had him at 1,390 appearances in all competitions, though Shilton's personal count is 1,387. The discrepancy comes down to which matches should count as official senior appearances. Fabio began his career in the late 1990s, playing mostly with Brazilian club Cruzeiro. He has 976 appearances with Cruzeiro, 235 with Fluminense, 150 with Vasco da Gama and 30 with Uniao Bandeirante. Fabio helped lead Fluminense, which he joined in 2022, to the semifinals of the Club World Cup earlier this year. He was a key player in the team's maiden Copa Libertadores title in 2023. Fabio played for Brazil's youth teams but never for the country's senior squad. ___ AP soccer:
