This Newly-Opened Indian Resort Is A Top Destination For Birdwatchers
With more than 1.4 billion people living within its borders, India currently ranks as the most populous country on the planet—but it's not just humans that thrive across this storied nation. From the Asian elephant to the gharial, there's a staggering array of native wildlife that's been calling India home for eons, with no shortage of iconic mammals, birds and reptiles to be found during a visit. And while top-tier ecotourism destinations abound across the country, few destinations can offer such a seamless blend of luxury and wildlife experiences as The Oberoi Vindhyavilas Wildlife Resort.
Located in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, this lavish property sits on the edge of India's Bandhavgarh National Park, a renowned preserve that's brimming with all sorts of majestic megafauna. While tigers abound across the refuge, the surrounding region also offers unparalleled opportunity for birdwatching, with The Oberoi Vindhyavilas Wildlife Resort operating several avian-inspired tours taking place both on-property and within the neighboring park. During a Kalpvriksha and the Birdsong excursion, guests can marvel at colorful sunbirds and bee-eaters thriving in the surrounding forest, while the Palash Pathways experience is available at both dawn and dusk, allowing visitors to spot species like the jungle nightjar and Indian scops owl as they search the surrounding area for food.
The Malabar pied hornbill is native to India and Sri Lanka.
Of course, no stay at The Oberoi Vindhyavilas Wildlife Resort is complete without embarking on a Jungle Safari across Bandhavgarh National Park. While the Bengal tiger is by far the most famous resident of the park, a typical expedition also offers the opportunity to spot sambar deer, striped hyenas and sloth bears—and there's no shortage of eye-catching birds that call the park home as well. In addition to world-renowned species like the common peafowl and Malabar pied hornbill, there's a wealth of passerines that can be found flitting from branch to branch, with the Indian paradise flycatcher, Indian pitta and Asian green bee-eater being three particularly striking species.
As an added bonus, the property offers a wide range of luxurious amenities to enjoy in between birding sessions. During the afternoon, guests can seek refuge from the sun in the 18-meter outdoor infinity pool, while there's no shortage of high-end dining experiences to enjoy all throughout the day. For a deep dive on the storied culinary culture of Madhya Pradesh, The Dining Room offers a diverse range of curries, kebabs and other dishes, while those wishing to dine in harmony with the surrounding wilderness should be sure to book a dinner at The Bush Kitchen. Perched on the edge of a glittering lake, this open-air venue is perfect for a sunset meal, with all sorts of smoked and grilled dishes gracing the menu.
The Asian green bee-eater feeds primarily on insects, with prey ranging from ants to wasps to—of ... More course—bees.
While the Indian coastline boasts top-tier ecotourism destinations like Marine National Park and Sunderban National Park, the interior of the country is home to world-class wildlife destinations as well, with The Oberoi Vindhyavilas Wildlife Resort serving as a prime example. Ferocious felines thrive just beyond property limits, and to sweeten the deal, the hotel grounds are brimming with all sorts of dazzling avifauna both large and small. If you're planning an all-out ecotourism expedition across India anytime soon, be sure to save some room on the itinerary for this world-class ecolodge.

Air India is suspending one of its US routes after Pakistan's airspace closure forced it to refuel in Europe
Air India is stopping one of its routes to the US, citing fewer available planes and longer flights caused by the monthslong partial closure of Pakistan's airspace. The flag carrier announced Monday that it plans to suspend flights between Delhi and Washington, DC, starting September 1. Since it was taken over by the Tata Group in 2022, Air India has undergone an ambitious transformation to expand and modernize. That includes upgrading planes with newer seats. Last month, it began retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which means several of them will be undergoing work at any given time until the end of next year. The airline has also faced difficulties with some of its routes since Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian carriers in late April, following regional conflict between the two countries. In Monday's announcement, it said this has resulted in "longer flight routings and increased operational complexity." Because some of its US routes already stretched the limits of their planes' maximum ranges, flying around Pakistan has required fuel stops. The Delhi-to-DC route, Flight 103, could previously fly directly north and over the Arctic Circle — but it has stopped to refuel in Vienna since April. That means what was once a roughly 15-hour flight now takes about 19 hours, including around 60 minutes on the ground in the Austrian capital. Air India said passengers who have already booked journeys between Delhi and Washington, DC, from September 1 would be offered a choice between rebooking on another flight or a full refund. The airline said it will still fly to four US airports: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O'Hare, and San Francisco. Interline agreements with Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines mean passengers could get a connecting flight to Washington, DC, on the same ticket. However, all of these journeys now take longer since Air India has to fly around its neighboring country to reach the US. For example, Flight 101, from Delhi to JFK, takes about 16 hours — two hours longer than before the airspace closure. This route also made fuel stops in Europe for a few weeks, but has flown direct since mid-May.

Yatra Is Betting on Corporate Bookings to Steady Profits: What the Numbers Say
Yatra is trading some headline consumer volume for steadier, higher-value corporate bookings. The last quarter shows early signs that the shift is working. Indian online travel company Yatra plans to grow its corporate travel business further. Whole Time Director and CEO Dhruv Shringi said the strategy for the company would be to focus on higher-value, repeat corporate customers rather than price-driven leisure traffic. For the quarter ended June 30, Yatra reported a stronger share of gross bookings coming from its B2B business. Shringi said roughly 67% of gross bookings came from B2B and that the share could move toward 70% by the end of the fiscal year. Yatra is trying to make its platform part of corporate customers' routines. That creates what Shringi called 'switching costs,' which means extra effort for a company to move away once they're integrated. He noted that most competitors still serve companies in an offline way. Yatra says it has deeper technical integration with customers and higher online penetration. This, the company argues, gives it an edge as companies digitize travel processes. 'Most of our competitors still service customers in the offline manner with minimal amount of integration. That is why there is a large opportunity for us right now to go and penetrate the digital adoption that's happening in mass across the industry,' Shringi said at the earnings call on Monday. Last year, Yatra announced its acquisition of Globe All India Services (Globe Travels), a corporate travel services provider, for INR 1.28 billion ($15.25 million) in cash. Long-Term Clients and Stickiness Long-standing corporate customers are central to Yatra's strategy. Shringi noted the tenure among big clients as evidence of the company's stickiness. 'If I look at our top 100 customers, 73 of those have been with us for more than five years,' he said. Those relationships, the company believes, deliver predictable revenue and operating leverage once technical integrations are in place. While online travel platforms chased consumers with discounts and marketing, Yatra flipped the script. 'Our annual retention rate (for corporate travel) is upwards of 97%,' he added. 'That's what gives us this kind of high operating leverage in the business.' What is Driving Profits? Shringi pointed to two main drivers of margin improvement. First, Yatra reduced direct discounting to customers. Instead of heavy price cuts, the company relied more on offers delivered through banks and marketing partners. That lowered Yatra's cost of acquiring customers. Second, the business mix shifted toward higher-margin products: corporate airfares, hotels and packages. 'Hotels and packages have net margins closer to about 11% compared to about 3%-4% net margin for air. Our mix of hotels and packages, year over year, has changed from about 15% to about 20% of gross bookings,' he said. Those changes helped push the company's net margin and revenue-after-cost measures higher than the raw growth in gross bookings. Financial Results and Growth Levers Yatra reported a year-over-year rise in gross bookings of about 9% for the quarter, reversing earlier declines in overall volume. The recovery was uneven: air ticketing improved modestly, while hotels and packages grew faster. The company is leaning on cross-selling hotels to corporate customers as an immediate growth lever. Several recent corporate wins were 'hotel-led,' meaning customers first used Yatra for hotels, which then opened doors to broader travel services. Hotels and packages are currently the higher-margin, easier-to-cross-sell products for Yatra. On the quarter's key numbers: Revenue from operations grew by 108% year-on-year to INR 2.1 billion ($24 million) in the first quarter. Adjusted EBITDA surged 138% year-on-year to INR 249 million ($2.8 million). The company's net profit was up 296% compared to the same period last year to INR 160 million ($1.8 million). The company continued to expand its corporate client base and closed 34 new corporate accounts during the quarter with a potential annual billing of INR 2 billion ($23 million). What am I looking at?
