Guns, drugs and cash were found in the engine bay of a car after an unexpected police visit left two men allegedly scrambling to stash a swag of illicit items, police say.
Further searches of the South Auckland property by police yesterday also revealed more weapons and ammunition in a bedroom and campervan, Inspector Matt Hoyes said.
Police – including members of the Armed Offenders Squad – arrived at the property in Patumāhoe with a search warrant after being told someone was acting in a threatening manner, Hoyes said.
When officers arrived they spotted a man in a garage trying to hide items, the Counties Manukau South Area Prevention Manager said.
'This person was quickly taken into custody without incident. A second man was then seen also scrambling to hide a number of items.

Photo: STEPHANIE LECOCQ / AFP British authorities arrested almost one in five people they checked in a week-long crackdown on migrants working illegally as delivery riders last month, the government's interior ministry said on Saturday. Immigration enforcement officers stopped and questioned 1780 individuals between 20 July and 27 and 280 people were arrested, the interior ministry said, adding asylum support was being reviewed for 53 of those detained. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure to show voters he can counter illegal immigration with support rising for Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage's Reform UK party. "This government is making sure rules are respected and enforced," Border Security Minister Angela Eagle said. As well as the arrests, civil penalty notices were issued to 51 businesses, including car washes and restaurants, which could face fines for employing illegal workers, the ministry said. Police seized 71 vehicles, including 58 e-bikes, and confiscated £8000 (NZ$18,000) in cash and £460,000 (NZ$1 million) worth of illicit cigarettes. The interior ministry said immigration enforcement teams would receive a £5m (NZ$11.3m) funding boost for the work tackling illegal working. Last month, the government struck a new deal with food delivery firms, including Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, to share information aimed at preventing illegal working. In the 12 months to July, Britain returned 35,052 people with no right to remain, up 13 percent on the previous 12 months. France this week agreed to accept some undocumented migrants who arrive in Britain by small boats with Britain accepting from France an equal number of legitimate asylum seekers with family ties in the country. - Reuters

Suspect in killing of four at bar caught after week-long manhunt

Photo: 123rf A US Army veteran accused of fatally shooting four people at a bar in the small Montana town of Anaconda earlier this month has been caught after a week-long manhunt , Governor Greg Gianforte said. The suspect, Michael Brown, 45, was captured "near the search area in Anaconda" around 2pm local time on Friday (8am on Saturday, New Zealand time), Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said in a statement. "The Anaconda shooter Michael Brown has been apprehended," Gianforte said on X. "I am proud of the unrelenting law enforcement effort this week to find and arrest Michael Paul Brown," Knudsen said. Brown had been sought in the shooting at Anaconda's Owl Bar, which killed bartender Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 64, and customers Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59, David Allen Leach, 70, and Tony Wayne Palm, 74. Officials have said they did not know of any motive for the killing. Family members have told local media that Brown, who served in the Iraq War, had a history of mental illness. Kristian Kelley, the daughter of slain bartender Nancy Kelley, told CBS News that Brown "was somebody that needed some serious resources. "He had some mental health issues as well as PTSD from being in the military," Kelley told CBS. "I've never known him to be violent. He was a person who would tell pretty strange stories and different things like that." The US Marshals Service had posted a US$7500 (NZ$12,600) reward for any information leading to Brown's capture after he vanished, sparking a search in nearby mountains. - Reuters
