Texas cities dominate rankings for new home construction, report shows

Yahoo04-06-2025
The Brief
Several Texas cities lead the nation in new home construction, with Houston ranking first and Dallas second in a new report.
In early 2025, Houston issued over 11,000 permits and Dallas nearly 10,000, while San Antonio and Austin also made the top 10.
This Texas-led construction boom aims to address a national housing deficit.
DALLAS - Several of the top cities in the country for new home construction are right here in Texas, according to a new report.
The report from ConsumerAffairs looked at where the most homes are being built in cities across the nation.
By the numbers
In January and February of this year, Dallas saw 9,811 new building permits issued. Only Houston issued more.
741 new homes were sold during the first two months of the year.
Dallas did have the highest prices for newly-constructed homes of the major Texas cities. The average new home cost about $450,000.
By the numbers
In the first two months of 2025, more than 11,047 new building permits were issued in Houston. That was the most of the 150 U.S. cities included in the report.
Houston also topped the list of the most new-construction homes sold with 1,314.
The report cites Houston as being the only major metro area in the country without zoning laws.
While Houston led the way, several other Texas cities made the list for new-home construction.
Dallas (2), San Antonio (8) and Austin (9) also landed in the top 10.
Of the top 10, only New York was outside the Sun Belt.
Dig deeper
The report says the average cost of a new-construction home in the United States is almost $485,000.
The National Association of Home Builders believes the U.S. is facing a structural housing deficit and that at least 1.5 million units need to be built to balance the housing market.
"What we have is a supply problem," said John Hunt, chief analyst and principal at MarketNsight, a housing analytics firm. "The more we can build, the less upward pressure there is on price … (and) the more folks can afford a home."

Kodak stock sinks 25%: Why the iconic company says it might go out of business

Eastman Kodak, the iconic American company known for its photography and film business, said it is at risk of going out of business, prompting a massive stock slide on Tuesday. Housing market shift: This map shows where home sellers are cutting prices the most Underwater mortgages are climbing in Florida and Texas housing markets These no-fee travel cards are gunning for Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Here's what to know. Kodak Q2 2025 earnings Let's start with Kodak's earnings report on Monday. For the second quarter ending June 30, Kodak reported its revenue was $263 million, a decrease of $4 million, or 1%, compared with the same period in 2024. Adjusting for the favorable impact of foreign exchange of $5 million, revenues decreased by $9 million, or 3%, compared with the year prior. Kodak ended the quarter with a cash balance of $155 million, a decrease of $46 million from December 31, 2024. The decrease was primarily driven by capital expenditures to fund growth initiatives, changes in working capital, the impact of higher costs, and lower profitability from operations. Most importantly, Kodak included a disclosure regarding its concern assessment in its second quarter 2025 Form 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In its earnings press release, the 133-year-old company said current financial conditions 'raise substantial doubt about the Company's ability to continue as a going concern,' which publicly traded companies are required to mention. The reason: It has a debt obligation, which runs some $500 million, according to CNN. 'The 'going concern' language in Kodak's 10-Q is essentially required disclosure because Kodak's debt comes due within 12 months of the filing,' a spokesperson for Kodak told Fast Company via email. It further clarified: 'Kodak is confident it will be able to pay off a significant portion of its term loan well before it becomes due, and amend, extend, or refinance our remaining debt and/or preferred stock obligations. To fund the repayment, we plan to draw on the approximately $300 million in cash we expect to receive from the reversion and settlement of our U.S. pension fund (the Kodak Retirement Income Plan, or 'KRIP') in December. 'However, the KRIP reversion is not solely within Kodak's control and therefore is not deemed 'probable' under U.S. [generally accepted accounting principles], which is what triggered the 'going concern.' Once the KRIP reversion is completed, Kodak will be virtually net debt-free and will have a stronger balance sheet than we have had in years.' Kodak stock price slides As a result of the earnings report, shares of Eastman Kodak (NYSE: KODK) fell more than 7% in premarket trading on Tuesday, and at the time of this writing, were down a whopping 25% in early afternoon trading. Kodak is a leading global manufacturer focused on commercial print and advanced materials and chemicals. Founded in 1882 by George Eastman, it has earned 79,000 worldwide patents over 130 years of R&D (research and development) and is known as a pioneer in the photography business, specializing in both cameras and film. In 2012, Kodak filed for bankruptcy as its business became increasingly irrelevant with the advent of digital photography and smartphone cameras. Spirit's survival hinges on finding more cash

Spirit Airlines can't seem to reach its cruising altitude. The budget airline issued a warning late Monday that if it doesn't find an infusion of cash, its business is poised to fail. Housing market shift: This map shows where home sellers are cutting prices the most Underwater mortgages are climbing in Florida and Texas housing markets These no-fee travel cards are gunning for Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Spirit expressed the dire state of its financials in its quarterly earnings report that was filed late Monday. The report comes less than six months after the beleaguered airline emerged from bankruptcy with a plan to right its business and pursue profitability. 'Management has concluded there is substantial doubt as to the Company's ability to continue as a going concern within 12 months from the date these financial statements are issued,' Spirit wrote in the filing, citing a scenario in which the company fails to hold the liquid assets needed to meet its debt obligations and keep its credit card processor. To steer itself out of the crisis, Spirit is pursuing 'liquidity enhancing measures' that could include selling some of its aircraft or real estate and offloading some of its extra airport gate capacity. 'While it is the Company's goal to execute on these initiatives, there can be no assurance that such initiatives will be successful,' the company wrote. Spirit cut 200 jobs back in January as part of its plan to slash $80 million in costs. Last year, the company sold 23 Airbus planes—more than 10% of its fleet—to drum up emergency cash. 'As you all know, we're facing significant challenges with our business, which is why we've been focused on taking actions to optimize our organization and create more efficiencies,' then-Spirit CEO Ted Christie told staff in an internal memo earlier this year. 'The bottom line is, we need to run a smaller airline and get back on better financial footing.' Recent problems, Frontier bailout Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last year in light of mounting losses, a pile of debt, and failed merger negotiations. The airline continued to operate during that time frame, which coincided with the busy holiday travel season. 'The most important thing to know is that you can continue to book and fly now and in the future,' the company wrote in an open letter to customers at the time. Spirit was in talks with JetBlue to combine the two airlines back in 2023, but the ill-fated merger faced stiff opposition. The Justice Department sued to block the $3.8 billion deal over antitrust concerns and, ultimately, a federal judge sided with the government, sounding the merger's death knell. Earlier this year, Spirit rejected a different merger offer from fellow budget carrier Frontier Airlines. Frontier revised the offer, but Spirit declined to move forward with the deal, which would have been worth around $2.16 billion. At the time, the company insisted that going it alone and pursuing its post-bankruptcy restructuring plan would benefit shareholders more than doubling up with another airline. The airline industry is in a strange transitional phase in 2025. Normal U.S. carriers are looking to rebrand themselves as 'lifestyle' airlines while credit card companies double down on luxe travel perks designed to make air travel more bearable. The industry's already wafer-thin margins are threatened by Trump's endless parade of tariffs and the economic chaos they sow. Meanwhile, a spate of U.S. aviation disasters has led to tanking trust in air travel and calls for a national overhaul of the air traffic control system that undergirds the whole industry. How—and if—budget airlines fit into the future of travel is an open question, but it's one Spirit needs to answer if it plans to survive. Unfortunately for the troubled airline, time is running out. Intuitive Machines Announces Upsize and Pricing of Private Offering of $300 Million of Convertible Senior Notes Due 2030

HOUSTON, Aug. 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Intuitive Machines, Inc. (Nasdaq: LUNR) ('Intuitive Machines' or the 'Company'), a leading space exploration, infrastructure, and services company, announced today the pricing of $300.0 million aggregate principal amount of 2.500% convertible senior notes due 2030 (the 'Notes') in a private offering (the 'Notes Offering') to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the 'Securities Act'). Intuitive Machines also granted the initial purchasers of the Notes in the Notes Offering an option to purchase, for settlement within a 13-day period beginning on, and including, the date on which the Notes are first issued, up to an additional $45.0 million aggregate principal amount of Notes. The aggregate principal amount of the offering was increased from the previously announced offering size of $250.0 million (or $287.5 million if the initial purchasers exercise their option to purchase additional notes in full). The Notes Offering is expected to close on August 18, 2025, subject to customary closing conditions. Use of Proceeds: Intuitive Machines estimates that the net proceeds from the Notes Offering will be approximately $291.8 million (or approximately $335.5 million if the initial purchasers' option to purchase additional Notes is exercised in full), after deducting the initial purchasers' discounts and commissions, but before giving effect to estimated offering expenses payable by the Company. Intuitive Machines intends to use approximately $32.0 million of the net proceeds from the Notes Offering to pay the cost of the capped call transactions described below. Intuitive Machines intends to use the remaining net proceeds from the Notes Offering for general corporate purposes, including operations, research and development and potential acquisitions. If the initial purchasers exercise their option to purchase additional Notes, Intuitive Machines expects to use a portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the additional Notes to enter into additional capped call transactions with the option counterparties (as defined below), with the remainder of the net proceeds to be used for general corporate purposes, including operations, research and development and potential acquisitions. Additional Details of the Notes: The Notes will be senior, unsecured obligations of Intuitive Machines. The Notes will accrue interest at an annual rate of 2.500%, payable semiannually in arrears on April 1 and October 1 of each year, beginning on April 1, 2026. The Notes will mature on October 1, 2030, unless earlier converted, redeemed or repurchased. Prior to the close of business on the business day immediately preceding July 1, 2030, noteholders will have the right to convert their Notes only upon the satisfaction of specified conditions and during certain periods. On or after July 1, 2030, and until the close of business on the second scheduled trading day immediately preceding July 1, 2030, noteholders may convert their Notes at any time regardless of these conditions. The initial conversion rate will be 76.2631 shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock per $1,000 principal amount of Notes (equivalent to an initial conversion price of approximately $13.1125 per share of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock, which represents a premium of approximately 25.0% over the last reported sale price of $10.49 per share of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Market on August 13, 2025). The conversion rate and conversion price will be subject to adjustment upon the occurrence of certain events. In addition, upon certain corporate events or upon a notice of redemption (as described below), Intuitive Machines will, under certain circumstances, increase the conversion rate for Noteholders who convert Notes in connection with such a corporate event or notice of redemption. Intuitive Machines will settle conversions of Notes by paying or delivering, as the case may be, cash, shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock, or a combination thereof, at Intuitive Machines' election. The Notes will not be redeemable at Intuitive Machines' option prior to October 6, 2028. Intuitive Machines may, at its option, redeem all or any portion of the Notes for cash on or after October 6, 2028 and prior to the 26th trading day immediately preceding the maturity date, but only if the last reported sale price per share of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock equals or exceeds 130% of the conversion price for a specified period of time and certain liquidity and other conditions have been satisfied. The redemption price will be equal to the principal amount of the Notes to be redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid interest, if any, to, but excluding, the redemption date. Noteholders will have the right, subject to certain conditions and exceptions described in the indenture governing the Notes (the 'indenture'), to require Intuitive Machines to repurchase for cash all or a portion of their Notes upon the occurrence of a 'fundamental change' (as defined in the indenture) at a repurchase price of 100% of their principal amount plus accrued and unpaid interest, if any, to, but excluding, the relevant repurchase date. Capped Call Transactions: In connection with the pricing of the Notes, Intuitive Machines entered into privately negotiated capped call transactions with certain financial institutions (the 'option counterparties'). The capped call transactions cover, subject to customary adjustments, the number of shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock initially underlying the Notes. The capped call transactions are expected generally to reduce the potential dilution to Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock upon any conversion of Notes and/or offset any cash payments Intuitive Machines is required to make in excess of the principal amount of converted Notes, as the case may be, with such reduction and/or offset subject to a cap. The cap price of the capped call transactions is initially $20.9800 per share, which represents a premium of 100% over the last reported sale price of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock of $10.49 per share on the Nasdaq Global Market on August 13, 2025, and is subject to certain adjustments under the terms of the capped call transactions. Intuitive Machines has been advised that in connection with establishing their initial hedges of the capped call transactions, the option counterparties or their respective affiliates expect to enter into various derivative transactions with respect to Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock and/or purchase shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock concurrently with or shortly after the pricing of the Notes. This activity could increase (or reduce the size of any decrease in) the market price of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock or the Notes at that time. In addition, the option counterparties or their respective affiliates may modify their hedge positions by entering into or unwinding various derivatives with respect to Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock and/or purchasing or selling Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock or other securities of Intuitive Machines in secondary market transactions following the pricing of the Notes and prior to the maturity of the Notes (and are likely to do so during the 25 trading day period beginning on the 26th scheduled trading day prior to the maturity date of the Notes, or, to the extent Intuitive Machines exercises the relevant termination election under the capped call transactions, following any repurchase, redemption or conversion of the Notes). This activity could also cause or avoid an increase or a decrease in the market price of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock or the Notes, which could affect a noteholder's ability to convert the Notes and, to the extent the activity occurs during any observation period related to a conversion of Notes, it could affect the number of shares of Class A common stock, if any, and value of the consideration that a noteholder will receive upon conversion of its Notes. Notices The Notes are only being offered and will only be sold to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A promulgated under the Securities Act in a private offering. Neither the Notes nor the shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock issuable upon conversion of the Notes, if any, have been, or will be, registered under the Securities Act or the securities laws of any other jurisdiction, and unless so registered, may not be offered or sold in the United States, except pursuant to an applicable exemption from, or in a transaction not subject to, such registration requirements. This press release does not constitute an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy any of the Notes or shares of Intuitive Machines' Class A common stock issuable upon conversion of the Notes in any state or jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation, or sale would be unlawful prior to registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such state or jurisdiction.
