Sailors recount their life-saving rescue by Carnival cruise ship
Just a week after Carnival Paradise rescued a group of refugees from an adrift vessel near Cuba, another Carnival Cruise Line ship's crew sprang into action to make a dramatic rescue on the other side of the world.
Carnival Splendor was sailing south of New Caledonia in the South Pacific during an eight-day cruise from Sydney when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea alerted them of a distress call from a disabled catamaran carrying four people and three dogs.

Carnival Splendor was five hours away from the catamaran and immediately rushed to their aid in the middle of the night, as cruise ships will always do when they learn of anyone in peril at sea.
One of the rescued couples, who feared for their lives while stranded on board the disabled catamaran, have since recounted the frightening ordeal and the cruise ship's extraordinary response, in a touching letter addressed to the entire Carnival Cruise Line crew.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald shared the letter from rescued sailors Juli and Ivan on his popular Facebook page that's followed by more than 600,000 Carnival cruisers.
"To all the Carnival crew, we are Juli and Ivan, two Argentinians 25 years old, traveling around the world for one year. We got the opportunity of crossing from Australia to Fiji in a catamaran, a bit more than a month ago, and from what you all know, it didn't end as expected," the letter began.
The sailors detailed how they ended up adrift at sea hundreds of miles from land.

"After 8 days of crossing the ocean and having lost both engines, we were caught in a storm, which first made us think we were going to get hit by lightning and ended up breaking our mast in two after 50 knots of wind surprised us. 200 nautical miles away from New Caledonia, and this being our first passage, we were frightened to death," they explained.
The sailors reported contacting every coast station they could, but did not receive a reply for hours until the voice of Carnival Splendor Captain Eduardo Ferrone brought them hope.
"After two hours with no news, we received a call from your captain, saying he knew about our situation and that by doubling their speed in the middle of the storm, could reach us in just five hours. That was and will [for]ever be the best notice of our lives," the letter emphasized.

"After 5 hours, hoping the catamaran didn't sink because of the mast hitting us on every wave, we received the second-best call of our lives, from your captain asking us to drop the first flare, and straight away confirming he could see us," the letter continued.
Finally, Carnival Splendor reached them at 3 a.m., swiftly bringing them aboard the cruise ship and saving their lives.
But what Carnival crew members did for them did not end there.
"What followed was just beyond reality," the letter continued. "This boat and its crew not only saved us but gave us all kindness, warmth, smiles, and attention which made recovering a completely different experience and a much easier one. There are no words to thank you all for being part of this recovery and exceeding expectations. Human values on board showed us better, and for that, we will be forever thankful."

The letter ended with heartfelt words of gratitude to Carnival Splendor's captain and several other crew members whom Juli and Ivan thanked by name.
"Special thanks to the Captain, Eduardo Ferrone, for being our guiding light in the middle of the ocean, giving us hope by making the call to save us and taking us back to land," the emotional letter read.
The rescued sailors went on to thank many other crew members who not only made sure they were safe, but who received them with exceptional kindness and concern for their health, well-being, and happiness.
"To all of you, thanks for the warm words and treatment, this would have been a different story if it wasn't for you," they added. "We will forever be grateful to Carnival Cruise Line."

Although the typically active Atlantic hurricane season is expected to get off to a calm start as it begins on June 1, tropical activity is already heating up in the usually quieter eastern Pacific. The eastern Pacific hurricane season, which begins slightly earlier than the Atlantic season in mid-May, already has its first named storm, Tropical Storm Alvin.A typical eastern Pacific hurricane season usually brings about 15 named storms and the first named storm usually doesn't come until around June 10. Most storms in this region track away from land, moving westward out to sea, but this season's first storm seems to be behaving a bit differently than most. And that behavior could potentially impact at least one cruise sailing in the popular Mexican Riviera Tropical Storm Alvin became the first named storm of the 2025 Pacific hurricane season on Thursday, May 29, Carnival cruise passengers boarded Carnival Firenze in Long Beach, Calif. to cruise to Cabo San Lucas — the same place that the tropical system seems to be heading. On Friday morning, May 30, Tropical Storm Alvin was hurling large swells toward portions of west-central and southwestern Mexico and the southern Baja California peninsula, increasing the risk of life-threatening rip currents this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center. Currently sailing a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise, Carnival Firenze is scheduled to visit Cabo San Lucas, located on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, on Saturday, May with dangerous rip currents, Tropical Storm Alvin is expected bring a rainy day to Cabo on Saturday that could put a damper on the cruise passenger experience in the popular port. The storm is expected to rapidly weaken this weekend as it swirls toward land, reaching Cabo San Lucas late Saturday night or early Sunday morning as a tropical depression. Of course, the ship's captain is no doubt keeping a close eye on the weather conditions and the storm's path. If deemed necessary, the captain will divert from the ship's planned itinerary to avoid significant impacts from the tropical system. Cruise ship captains will always do what's best for the safety of passengers and you have a Mexican Riviera or Caribbean cruise planned during hurricane season, you really shouldn't worry. As a long-time cruiser and 20-year coastal Florida resident, I can assure you that cruising during hurricane season is safe, and the majority of summer cruises are not affected by severe weather. Yes, there's always the chance that your cruise could be impacted by a storm, but your cruise line will never put your safety in jeopardy. You should be aware though that hurricanes and tropical storms do sometimes cause cruise itineraries to be altered. Occasionally, cruises also have to be canceled as a result of significant storms, especially when they warrant the closure of cruise departure ports. Sometimes, cruise ships even get stuck at sea because of hurricane-related cruise port closures. So, while some cruisers see their cruises canceled because of a storm, others get their vacations at sea example, last summer, Come Cruise With Me's Matt Frankel was on board the Margaritaville at Sea Islander when it got stuck at sea for two extra days due to Hurricane Debby. The ship's home port, Port Tampa Bay, closed due to the hurricane, so the ship couldn't safely get back until after the storm passed. Although inconvenient for the Frankel family and other passengers on board, they remained safe and well taken care of by the ship's crew as they waited out the storm in calmer waters. Grand Strand hotel occupancy sees 3-year high over Memorial Day weekend, Myrtle Beach chamber says
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Memorial Day weekend hotel occupancy along the Grand Strand was the highest it's been in three years, according to early data from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. The occupancy rate reached 81.2% on May 23, up 3.4% from the same day in 2024, according to STR, a CoStar Group company. The rate climbed to 92.8% on May 24, a 2.9% year-over-year increase. The rates also exceeded 2023 levels. 'This early data underscores the resilience of our destination and the momentum we're carrying into the summer,' said Stuart Butler, chief marketing officer at Visit Myrtle Beach. 'While we did see a slight dip in mid-week occupancy leading up to the Memorial Day weekend, Friday and Saturday were strong. These figures reflect overall market averages, and we recognize that individual property performance can vary. That said, we're encouraged by the results and by the continued interest in Myrtle Beach heading into peak season.'
