One dead, two wounded after East Los Angeles alleyway shooting
One man was killed and two others were wounded during an early morning shooting in East Los Angeles on Saturday. It happened at around 2:25 a.m. in the 5000 block of Whittier Boulevard, near Woods Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies say that upon arrival, they found three gunshot victims. One of the men, 56, was declared dead at the scene. He has not yet been identified. The two other victims were both taken to nearby hospitals with wounds to their legs, deputies said. They are both said to be in stable condition. "Investigators learned the victims were transients living in tents in the alley. ... An unknown person shot at them from Woods Avenue and then fled the scene in an unknown direction," said a release from LASD. Detectives did not provide any information on a suspect or motive in the incident. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact LASD's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Man pleads guilty to armed robberies at Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside county pharmacies
A Fontana man has pleaded guilty to his part in a crew that committed armed robberies at pharmacies across Southern California. Aaron Carter, 39, entered his plea in Los Angeles federal court on Friday. He faces counts of interference with commerce by robbery and using a firearm in a crime of violence, according to court documents. According to his plea agreement, Carter and four others robbed pharmacies in Newport Beach, Woodland Hills, Temecula and Fullerton in August and September in 2024. They also attempted to rob two of the same stores in October that year. Investigators with a violent crime task force in Orange County, which works with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, had been investigating pharmacy heists across the region, said an affidavit in the case. They say that three male suspects wearing hoodies and face masks entered the pharmacies during each incident. Prosecutors said that two of the suspects, each armed with a gun, would force employees to the ground while they stole crash from the registers. At the same time, a third suspect would use a trash can from inside the pharmacies and load it with stolen drugs. They further noted that the same group returned to a Woodland Hills pharmacy in October, which they had previously robbed, but the employees prevented them from entering upon recognizing them. Instead, they fled from the area. A week later, prosecutors said that two members of the crew attempted to rob the same Temecula store they had previously targeted, but store employees told them they didn't have access to either the safe or the drugs they were demanding. After this failed attempt, authorities attempted to arrest the suspects, but they drove away at high speeds. After fleeing for some time, they crashed into an unmarked patrol car. All four were arrested without further incident. Carter was charged in Oct. 2024, as was Diamond Lucious, 26, of Victorville, 35-year-old San Bernardino resident Isaac Penaldoza, and 25-year-old Menifee resident Kamaria Kendrick. Lucious and Penaldoza pleaded guilty in June to the same charges as Carter. They both will be sentenced in September. Kendrick pleaded guilty earlier in August and is scheduled for sentencing in November.

Baltimore brewery targeted during string of burglaries in Hampden
A string of burglaries in Baltimore's Hampden community prompted an investigation on Friday night, police said. Officers said at least two businesses were burglarized, and a third had property damage. One of the locations impacted was Nepenthe Brewery. "Kind of surprised, they came through the front door," said customer Michael Kaspar. "They posted on Reddit, so I came in to help support them." Baltimore police responded to the brewery just after 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. Surveillance video from inside the brewery shows at least two suspects behind the bar after smashing the front door. When Chef Andrew Cole came in, officers were already there. "It looked like they just used a tool to shatter the glass and come through, and they kind of knew where they were going," Cole said. Police also responded to a burglary call at Keller's Liquor and Grano's Pasta Bar for destruction of property, where it appears someone tried to smash their door. Officers did not say if they believe the same suspects are responsible, and are investigating each incident separately. "Of course, when you see a local business that gets broken into, it's tragic," said customer Alex Kellum. "You don't want to see local businesses suffer because of things like that." That's why the community said they will continue to come out and support these businesses during the good times and during the bad. "The support from the Hampden community has been amazing. They reached out immediately, offering help, assistance, trying to start different fundraisers," said Cole. "It's just important to give back to the community, and the community will give back to you. Just like this establishment, they do a lot for the surrounding area," Kaspar said.
