Zambia withdraws four NWSL players from matches in China over United States ‘travel measures'
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has said that four of its internationals who play in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) will not travel to China for upcoming matches.
FAZ said in a statement on Wednesday that Barbra Banda, Rachael Kundananji, Prisca Chilufya and Grace Chanda will miss the Yongchuan International Tournament due to 'additional travel measures introduced by the new administration' in the United States.

The New York Times reported this week that President Donald Trump is set to implement new tariffs which could further limit trade between the U.S. and China, increasing tensions between the two countries. In recent months, increased border security in the U.S. has resulted in reports of tourists and legal immigrants being detained. Trump has also signed an executive order to draft a list of countries that 'warrant a partial or full suspension' by the U.S. The New York Times reported that China is not on the list of 43 countries, while the State Department says travelers to mainland China should 'exercise increased caution.'
Reuben Kamanga, the general secretary of the FAZ, said it is in the 'best interest' of the four Zambian players to miss the upcoming friendly matches, based on advice he received from 'key offices', including the United States of America Zambian mission in Washington.
'After working through the process instigated by recently introduced measures it was decided that it is in the best interest of our players to skip this assignment,' Kamanga said. The Zambian embassy in Washington, D.C. did not immediately reply to request for clarification on what measures FAZ was referring to.
The decision was also informed by players' concerns about entry back into the United States, according to a source briefed on the situation.
'(The players) will definitely be available for future assignments as they were for the last window when we played Malawi,' Kamanga said. 'The technical bench has since roped in replacements to ensure that the team remains competitive.'
The NWSL did not respond to request for comment at the time of publication. Representatives for Orlando Pride and Bay FC, where the players play, confirmed the players will not travel to China. The Pride representative stated the same 'additional travel measures' as FAZ for the reasoning.

Banda, Zambia's captain, is a notable absence given the 25-year-old's goalscoring form since the 2024 season. She scored 17 times as Orlando won the NWSL title last season.
Bay FC's Kundananji and Pride's Chilufya and Chanda, meanwhile, all featured for Zambia in the 2024 Olympic Games. Kamanga emphasized the importance of international games in Zambia's preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations competition in July.
Zambia faces Thailand on Saturday, April 5. They will then face either hosts China or Uzbekistan in the third-place playoff or the Yongchuan International Tournament final three days later.

The absence of the four Zambian NWSL players will be particularly felt by the Copper Queens during the international break — particularly Banda and Kundananji both strikers, who've each begun their second seasons in the league and have been critical to their respective sides.
Last season, Banda finished the regular season with 13 goals, six assists, and a nomination for the NWSL MVP award. Her consistent, dynamic performance ignited the Pride, once an embattled club, on an historic run that earned them the NWSL Shield and a championship, where she scored the team's winning goal and was crowned the MVP of the match. Three games into their 2025 campaign, Banda has already scored twice and contributed an assist for the Pride.
Kundananji, meanwhile, made headlines in the league before her first match with Bay when her $788,000 transfer fee from Madrid CFF in Spain to the San Jose, California-based team set a new world record at the time. The 23-year-old striker recorded five goals and four assists in her NWSL debut season and quickly became a beloved player for the home crowd, known for her cheeky moves and tenacious work rate.

Chanda, a midfielder, was unable to play for the Pride last season due to injury but has been activated this season. Chilufya, a forward who signed with the Pride in late January from FC Juarez in Mexico, has played 82 minutes for the Pride this season.

'The NWSL Championship brings another top soccer event to the Bay Area in 2025 and is an indicator of how impactful the Bay Area is in the global soccer landscape, the tremendous support of the game across the region and the widespread passion shown by fans for women's sports,' Bay FC CEO Brady Stewart said in a news release. Olympic golden girl surfaces from dark hole
Swim star Mollie O'Callaghan has emerged from a self-described dark hole to prove she can remain a world-beater. O'Callaghan has posted the fastest women's 100m freestyle time this year - 52.87 seconds - at Australia's selection trials for the looming world titles. The 21-year-old who already boasts five Olympic gold medals has battled a post-Paris let-down, injury and illness in a troubled preparation for the trials. "I have learnt so much mentally this time ... there was a lot of setbacks," O'Callaghan said after her Friday night feat. "You have to always step in that dark place to get the best out of your self. "That's what sport is about, it's putting yourself in that hole to see how mentally strong you are - and I've definitely done that this season." O'Callaghan took five months off after being Australia's most successful athlete at last year's Olympic Games when winning three gold medals plus a silver and bronze. After the journey of self-discovery to find an identity outside of swimming, she returned to the pool but suffered a knee injury, then illness, ahead of the trials for the world titles in Singapore starting July 27. "You can't really predict injury, you can't predict sickness, you can't predict any of that," O'Callaghan said. "You can try and prevent it all you want but sometimes those things just happen and it's just how you look at it. "There was a lot of tears. But in the long run, I have learnt so much about myself and I wouldn't change a thing." Her bumpy preparation is something compatriot Zac Stubblety-Cook can relate to after he secured his spot on the Dolphins team for the worlds. Stubblety-Cook won his 200m breaststroke final in two minutes 09.09 seconds. The time was well shy of his personal best of 2.05.95, which was a world record when set in 2022 until broken by China's Qin Haiyang a year later. An Olympic gold medallist in the event at the Tokyo Games of 2021 and silver medallist last year in Paris, Stubblety-Cook was pragmatic about his latest performance. "Last year, I had a lot of time off and a lot of time to reflect and see where I was at - and make sure I really wanted to commit to the next four years," he said. "And it's year one out of four so we're taking it much more as a four-year approach (to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics)." In the men's 200m backstroke, Josh Edwards-Smith (1:56.94) and Brad Woodward (1:57.14) earnt selection for the worlds. In the women's 200m breaststroke, Ella Ramsay (2:23.92) and Tara Kinder (2:24.61) also made the team. And Sam Short's return to form continued with victory in the men's 1500m freestyle - he touched in 14:52.43, just 0.56 seconds ahead of fellow 21-year-old Ben Goedemans.

2025 NWSL Championship to be played in San Jose at Bay FC's stadium
The 2025 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship is heading to the Bay Area. San Jose's 18,000-seat PayPal Park, the home stadium of Bay FC and Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, will host this year's title match, the league announced Thursday. The championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 with a 5 p.m. PT kickoff for the fourth straight year. It will be broadcast on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Advertisement 'We're thrilled to bring the NWSL Championship back to the West Coast and to a region with as rich a history in women's soccer as the Bay Area,' NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said in a news release. 'This community's passion for the game, combined with the excitement surrounding one of our newest teams in Bay FC, makes it the perfect setting to celebrate the league's top talent and crown our next champion.' The Bay Area houses some of the top collegiate programs in the nation in Stanford, Santa Clara, and Cal. In 2010, the Bay Area-based FC Gold Pride claimed the title in the now-defunct Women's Professional Soccer league with a roster bursting with star players, including Marta, Christine Sinclair, Shannon Boxx and Camille Abily. 'The history of women's soccer runs deeply and strongly in the Bay Area,' said Bay FC co-founder and former USWNT player Brandi Chastain. 'From the roster of the national team players born and raised here to the first-ever professional domestic league champions coming from here, our community's fabric is woven with the greatest the game has to offer.' In its inaugural 2024 season, Bay FC averaged 13,000 fans at PayPal Park, the fifth-highest attendance in the league. It marks the second time in three years that the NWSL championship will take place on the West Coast, with its milder winters. Last year, the final between the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit was held at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. In 2023, San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium hosted the title match between Gotham FC and Seattle Reign, and in 2022, the title game took place at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. Like last year, eight of the 14 teams in the NWSL will make it to the postseason, playing in four quarterfinals between Nov. 7-9. Two will air on ESPN/ABC, while the other two will be split between CBS/Paramount+ and Prime Video. The semifinals will be held the weekend of Nov. 14-16 and will be shared by CBS/Paramount+ and ESPN/ABC. Tickets for the 2025 final go on sale in August.
