ASUNCION - The Maracana has welcomed the greats of soccer and showbiz over the years with Pele, Zico and Frank Sinatra among those to have graced its stage and the iconic stadium is the perfect venue for a Women's World Cup match, said former Brazil player Formiga.
The celebrated Rio de Janeiro stadium is one of eight venues for the 2027 tournament, the first time Latin America is hosting the women's showpiece event, and has been the setting for some of football's most memorable matches.
Uruguay stunned Brazil at the stadium in 1950 to win their second World Cup, while Germany got their hands on the trophy in 2014 with victory over Lionel Messi's Argentina at the venue.
Pele also scored his 1,000th goal there in 1969 in a match between Santos and Vasco da Gama, and it also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.
"A World Cup match there could be the greatest match in history," Formiga told Reuters on Wednesday after playing in a 'legends match' in Asuncion, a day before FIFA's 75th Congress.
"I hope it's true and that everyone finally has the opportunity to experience the great Maracana. We have many other great stadiums in the country, but none like it."
The Maracana also boasts the four biggest attendances in world football, with more than 150,000 fans crammed into the stadium to watch World Cup matches and qualifiers.
"The Maracana is different, it's impressive, it moves people's souls," added the 47-year-old, who played in seven World Cups and seven Olympic Games for Brazil. REUTERS

Labubu-maker Pop Mart diversifies into jewellery with new concept store

REUTERS/Go Nakamura SHANGHAI - "Blind box" toymaker Pop Mart, which has seen frenzied sales worldwide for products related to its ugly-cute Labubu character, opened its first jewellery store in Shanghai on Friday. The jewellery concept store, called Popop, sells accessories adorned with Pop Mart's top-selling characters, including Labubu, Molly and Skullpanda. While Chinese consumption remains subdued in the face of a prolonged property downturn and sluggish economy, Pop Mart's affordable and adorable toys have remained in high demand both at home and abroad, driving its share price up more than 200% so far this year. Investor Zhang Ming, 34, who owns Pop Mart stocks worth 100 million yuan ($13.92 million), flew from his base in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing for the opening to check out the new store type and decide whether to increase his shareholding in the company. "I believe that the pricing and target audience for this brand are particularly well-suited, and I am confident that Pop Mart could potentially become China's version of Disney," Zhang said, predicting that the company's market cap could double from its current $45.65 billion valuation. Along with some Disney characters and others related to anime, comics and popular video games, Pop Mart's characters are seen as fulfilling what has been called "emotional consumption", which sees young consumers spend on affordable luxuries that bring joy into their lives. Fang Ke, 35, who has a birthday coming up this month decided to treat herself to a 699 yuan Labubu bracelet at the opening. "I've loved Pop Mart for a long time; it's good-looking, brightly coloured, and also has a visual impact," she said. "My daughter likes it too." At Popop, prices start at around 350 yuan for charms or a simple silver ring, and go as high as 2699 yuan for necklaces adorned with metallic models of the characters. Most pieces are priced at under 1,000 yuan. At a traditional Pop Mart store, the "blind box" toys that the chain is best known for generally sell for 69 yuan and up, but consumers have shown a willingness to shell out much more for limited editions. Earlier this week, a Beijing auction house sold a human-sized Labubu figure for 1.08 million yuan, setting a new record and marking the toy's switch from craze to collectible. Saudi Arabia, Qatar to host fourth round of Asia's World Cup qualifiers

FILE PHOTO: The New York/New Jersey's FIFA World Cup 2026 logo is revealed during the kickoff event in Times Square in New York City, U.S., May 18, 2023. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been awarded the hosting rights for the fourth round of Asia's 2026 World Cup preliminaries in October, the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday. The pair have reached the next phase of the continent's qualifiers and will be joined by Iraq, Oman, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates in the draw, which takes place on July 17. The decision to award the rights to Saudi Arabia and Qatar comes after Iraq confirmed earlier this week that they had bid to host one of the groups. Teams will be divided into two groups of three nations and the winners of each will join Japan, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan in qualifying for the newly-expanded 48-nation finals from the continental preliminaries. Games will be played across three match days from Oct. 8 to 14. The runners-up in each group will advance to a playoff in November, with the winners of that clash featuring in an intercontinental playoff tournament in March to determine the two remaining World Cup spots. The six competing nations qualified for the fourth phase by finishing either third or fourth in their respective groups in the third round of qualifying, which was completed on Tuesday. Pulisic hits back at former United States players over absence criticism

AC Milan's Christian Pulisic said while he opted out of the Gold Cup, he had offered to play in the recent friendlies but was rejected. PHOTO: AFP – United States captain Christian Pulisic has defended his decision to skip the Concacaf Gold Cup and said those questioning his commitment to the national team were 'way out of line'. Pulisic, who played 50 games for AC Milan in the recently concluded season, said taking time to rest and recover was the right call for him and the team with the World Cup coming to the US, Mexico and Canada next year. Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson are also skipping the June 14-July 6 Gold Cup despite not being injured, according to USA Today. Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are on Club World Cup duty for Juventus with Giovanni Reyna also in that tournament for Borussia Dortmund. Former US stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas were among those criticising players who decided to skip the tournament and their comments did not sit well with Pulisic. 'When it comes to those guys, it is tough because I looked up to those guys growing up, some of these guys were my idols, and I respect them so much as players,' the 26-year-old told CBS Sports podcast on June 12. 'It's tough especially when some of them privately, the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be a friend and then they say something different publicly. 'Of all things, you can talk about my performances, but to question my commitment to the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line.' The US suffered a fourth straight defeat on June 10 when they lost 4-0 at home against Switzerland in a friendly. Pulisic said he had offered to play in that friendly, as well as the 2-1 defeat by Turkey on June 7. 'The only point I would make with that is that I did want to be part of at least the two friendlies,' he said. 'I did speak with the coaches, and I asked and I wanted to be part of the team in whatever capacity I could. They said no; they said they only wanted one roster, and that's a coach's decision. I fully respect that. I didn't understand it, but it is what it is,' he said. Pulisic said he hoped that fans and pundits who have turned against him would change their views when he returns fit and fresh. 'You know how it is: people forget really quickly. Once I'm back with the national team - I hope - once I'm back with the national team and can play again, score a goal and win a game, people will forget all about this quickly,' he added.
