Tabung Haji steps up heatstroke protection for pilgrims

The Star30-05-2025

MECCA: Temperatures here have risen to nearly 50°C here, and Tabung Haji wants to ensure that Malaysian haj pilgrims are given adequate protection from heatstroke, especially at Arafah on June 5.
More than 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims, who have arrived weeks earlier in Mecca, will join more than two million others from around the world for the most important ritual called wukuf (ritual of standing before God) at Arafah, located about 8km from the Holy Mosque.
Tabung Haji Haj Department head Hisham Harun, who is also the head of the Malaysian haj entourage, said health and welfare facilities are in full operation to care for all Malaysian pilgrims.
It was reported that the Saudi Arabian government had sent out advisory notices that Friday sermons and prayers be shortened during the current haj season due to the intense heat in Mecca and Madinah.
'All the tents have been set up in Mina and Arafah. Each tent will have one clinic to attend to the pilgrims at any time.
'We have also stationed ambulances to ferry pilgrims to the nearest hospitals when required,' he said during an inspection tour of the Malaysian tents.
Haj pilgrims must spend the day on the plains of Arafah, praying and supplicating as an obligatory ritual to complete the haj.
'Pilgrims are advised to stay in the tents in Mina and Arafah between 10am and 4pm (Mecca time) to avoid heatstroke.
Tabung Haji deputy head of haj delegation (Medical) Dr Hairul Izwan said that the clinics provided for pilgrims this season are more spacious and comfortable.
'Pilgrims are advised to stay adequately hydrated throughout their time in the Masyair areas – in Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina – as we are concerned that temperatures could reach up to 50°C,' he said.
Pilgrims can take immediate action if they see others suffering from dehydration, such as spraying water on the face, head, neck, under the armpits, or the entire body, he added.
On food preparation, Hisham said that there is strict adherence to the nutrition and cleanliness of the food served to the pilgrims throughout the more than 40-day period they spend in Mecca during the haj season.
'Seven kitchens operate around the clock for the pilgrims stationed in five hotels in Mecca. We brought 17 Malaysian chefs, along with ingredients to ensure that pilgrims do not miss Malaysian cuisine,' he said, adding that more than two million meals are given to Malaysian pilgrims throughout the haj season this year.
Muslims in Malaysia will celebrate Aidiladha on June 7.

First group of Malaysian haj pilgrims to arrive home on June 14

MAKKAH: The first group of 284 Malaysian pilgrims for the 1446H/2025M haj season is scheduled to return home from King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, at 5.40am (local time) this Saturday (June 14). They will depart on Malaysia Airlines flight MH8251 and are expected to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at about 8.10pm the same day. Maktab Operations Director's Office manager Abdul Fattah Mohd Fasor said Tabung Haji (TH) and the airlines are implementing the City Check-In (CCI) system, which enables baggage check-in at pilgrims' accommodations, to ease the return process. "The CCI process follows standard airport procedures, including restrictions on prohibited items and baggage weight limits. Malaysia Airlines is involved in today's session, while Saudi Airlines will participate in subsequent ones. "A total of 47 CCI sessions are scheduled from today until June 24,' he told reporters after observing the process at the TH Makkah Headquarters in Abraj Al Janadriyah here. Abdul Fattah added that each pilgrim will receive five litres of Zamzam water upon arrival in Malaysia. They are not permitted to bring their own, in line with Saudi regulations. "Each pilgrim is allowed a baggage limit of 30kg as set by the airline. If the weight exceeds this, we encourage pilgrims, especially married couples, to repack jointly or use the available courier services,' he said. A pilgrim from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, Nora'azidah Abd Rahman, 51, expressed satisfaction with the smooth CCI process carried out the day before. "We didn't expect such excellent service, and we felt like VIPs. Having the check-in process done at our accommodation made it much easier. My husband and I only needed to bring two bags under 30 kg each onto the plane,' she said. The final group of Malaysian haj pilgrims is scheduled to depart from Madinah at 10.40am (local time) on July 10 and arrive at KLIA at 12.35am on July 11. – Bernama

Tourism, Transport ministries in talks over which should regulate tour vehicles

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry is discussing with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry the possibility of allowing the latter to regulate tour vehicles, including buses. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said discussions were still at a preliminary stage and involved multiple ministries due to the complexities surrounding vehicle regulation. "That matter is still at the discussion stage between ministries, as there are still many aspects that need to be looked into. "Regulating tour buses, as you can imagine, involves a lot of procedures such as testing and so on, which require thorough discussion," he said briefly when met after attending Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's Jelajah Ria 2.0 Programme. Yesterday, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry had called for control over tourism-related vehicles such as buses to be returned to it, citing a loss of confidence in Malaysian road safety among various countries. It had said in a statement that parties involved in tourism and student exchange programmes from Asean, the Middle East, China, Japan and South Korea had expressed their concerns to the ministry. It had said there was a lack of confidence in Malaysia's tourism transport safety assurance mechanisms among these countries following the bus crash in Gerik which saw 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students killed and many others injured. "We will continue to monitor those with prior offences who remain defiant. We don't sweep such matters under the carpet," said Hasbi.
