Broncos player issues defiant message with Ben Hunt's return set to see him axed
Broncos star Billy Walters has claimed he will fight for his bench position at the club after Michael Maguire is expected to throw Ben Hunt straight into the No.9 role when he returns from injury. Fans were left deflated on Tuesday when it emerged Hunt would not be fit in time for the game against the Warriors on the weekend.
Hunt has been out since injuring himself against the Rabbitohs in round 10 after a MCL injury. While he was expected to play this weekend at Suncorp, Maguire has been forced to sit him out for another round after failing to recover in time. This means Cory Paix will start at dummy-half, while Walters will come off the bench.
Paix and Walters have switched roles a number of times throughout the season as Maguire has looked to find the right balance for his team. Paix appears to have won back the starting role, which leaves Walters in a precarious situation.
Walters appears to have one more chance to prove himself this weekend, before Hunt is fit. And the Broncos utility admitted he isn't ready to let go of his jersey. "I feel like everyone's position's up for grabs," Walters said.
"You have got to be playing good footy or you're not going to be in the team. So I don't know which way Madge (coach Michael Magure) is going to go. "It's kind of been up to me and Paixy to see who's playing the best or see who can bring the most to the team, so, I suppose we'll see in the next coming weeks.
"I keep asking Dozer (Hunt) when he's going to be back, hoping he can push it back a little bit further just to make sure I'm in the team, but even if I'm not in the team I'll still be trying hard to get back in. You never know with rugby league these days, it could change pretty quickly, so you've always got to be ready and just take the opportunity when it's there."
The Broncos have struggled at times this year with Hunt slotting into No.6 while Ezra Mam was serving his suspension. While the likes of Cooper Cronk thought the Broncos were better off with Hunt at five-eighth alongside Adam Reynolds, the form of Reece Walsh dropped as he struggled to link-up with the new spine.
Mam's return appears to have helped Walsh play with more freedom and Hunt will revert to the No.9 role he was initially brought into play. While Hunt has played No.7 for most of his NRL career, he shifted to No.9 for Queensland in State of Origin.
Slater has opted to use Hunt to start game in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 vicory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker
Hunt has excelled in this role having played it for both the Maroons and Australia. The switch would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience.

Corey Parker calls for premiership-winning coach to stand down now
While Walters is fighting for his position in the Broncos 17, the utility admitted he is just ready to take advantage of his opportunity. "You can't think too far ahead anyway. You have got to enjoy every moment that you pull on the Broncos jersey and be grateful for every chance that you get and go out there and play your best footy," he added. I just know if I'm playing my best football, then I'll be in the team somewhere."

Key Swans forward backed to respond from horror outing
Sydney coach Dean Cox has thrown his support behind Joel Amartey, backing the key forward to respond from a horror outing in front of goal. The 25-year-old was plagued by inaccuracy in last week's important win over Port Adelaide, finishing with 0.6. Another of Amartey's shots from 40m fell short, while two other attempts at goal sailed out on the full. The Swans got away with it against the inconsistent Power, but the finals contending Western Bulldogs, buoyed by superstar captain Marcus Bontempelli's 250th match, will be a different proposition at the SCG on Friday night. "The first part is to create opportunities and give them to yourself," Swans coach Dean Cox told reporters on Thursday. "We've had three players in the last five years take seven marks inside 50. "He's (Amartey) done it twice, and Lance (Franklin) has done it once so that's the first part of the puzzle that we have wanted to get right. "And to his credit, his ability to lead with the ball, the blocking off the ball, and the work for each other certainly allowed that. And then now it's about finishing off his work. "Before that game, he was above 70 per cent from set shots. "So people have days like that, it's about him trying to work on it throughout the week, which he's done." Joel Amartey takes a big grab and ices the game with a calm snap in the dying stages on Friday night🤝Mark of the Week, presented by @qatarairways — Sydney Swans (@sydneyswans) May 18, 2025 Amartey has endured a frustrating year, restricted to just seven games because of injury and suspension. But Sydney are undoubtedly a better team when he plays, having a 4-3 record with him involved this year. The Swans have started to turn around their campaign following an uncharacteristically slow start to the season. Star midfielder Chad Warner, who will run out for his 100th AFL game, this week revealed the Swans had realised they had dropped their on and off-field standards in the first half of the campaign. Last year's painful grand final belting by the Brisbane Lions, Cox taking over from long-time coach John Longmire, and a stack of key players missing contributed to the 4-8 slump. But if Sydney can make it three-straight wins by accounting for the Bulldogs they will genuinely be back in the hunt for finals. "We understand that at times things can waiver from that, so it's just about calling it out when it arises," Cox said about the Swans' standards. "It probably took a week or two too long, I think the bye certainly gives you a chance to reset and look at the whole program and what's actually happening, what we need to work on, and that's what we did. "On top of that, we understand you have to train at a certain level to play at a certain level. "The boys have improved in that area, which has been good."

Sam Burgess rejection that could see international superstar sign with NRL club
The Perth Bears' decision to overlook Sam Burgess for the head coaching role could have a domino effect, with his Warrington Wolves captain George Williams being lined up as a potential signing for the Dolphins. Williams previously played halfback for Canberra in the NRL and was a key part of the Raiders' march to the 2020 preliminary final, before leaving the club and returning home to England. The England international still has 12 months left on his contract with Warrington and was tipped to join Burgess at the Bears, if his coach landed the Perth job. But the Bears ultimately appointed former Kangaroos and Maroons coach Mal Meninga, and it's presented the Dolphins with an opportunity to land the Warrington captain. Despite still having one more year left on his current deal, Wolves are resigned to losing Williams at the end of this season. However, they are unlikely to release him without some form of compensation and have reportedly slapped a $400,000 price tag on the 30-year-old's head, with the Dolphins understood to be interested in his services. reports that Warrington were exploring a potential swap deal for Dolphins five-eighth Kodi Nikorima, who also has one year left on his current contract. But the report says Kristian Woolf's Dolphins are keen to hang onto the Kiwi international, who has struck up a deadly halves combination with gun halfback Isaiya Katoa this season. However, the Dolphins' interest in Williams suggests they are looking to add an experienced half to play alongside Katoa next season and help mentor one of the most talented young playmakers in the game. The Dolphins were also in the race to sign Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans, but the veteran No.7 looks all but guaranteed to join the Roosters next year. RELATED: Manly coach responds to ugly rumours around DCE's captaincy Fans divided as Storm lose star to rivals and Eels sign ex-Origin player Blow for Storm and Queensland as star ruled out of Origin 3 The move for Williams does seem a little harsh on Nikorima though, and could mean he'll have to be content with an interchange role at the Dolphins next season. Nikorima has shone in the bench utility role for New Zealand and the Broncos in the past, and his versatility illustrates why Woolf is not willing to part ways with the 31-year-old. Nikorima has six tries and 12 try assists in 14 games for the Dolphins this season and has provided the perfect foil for Katoa, who has already been earmarked as a future Origin star after establishing himself as one of the game's best halfbacks. Katoa is by no means the finished product though and Williams could be the ideal partner to help develop his game and take the 21-year-old to the next level. Williams' Wolves are currently eighth on the English Super League ladder with a 6-9 record from an inconsistent season so far. But the 30-year-old playmaker is expected to captain his nation in the Ashes against Australia at the end of the year as the series returns to England for the first time in 22 years.
