Delay OFW deployment to Middle East amid tensions, DMW tells recruitment firms
In its advisory, DMW reiterated the OFW deployment restrictions in Israel, Iran, Jordan, and Lebanon.
'Right now, we're on Alert Level 2 in Israel, which means new hires are prohibited, but pwede ang returning,' DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said.
'However, due to the airspace restrictions, it is impossible for them to go, including those bound for Jordan, because they will just be turned back in case of the closure of the airspace,' he added.
The advisory mandates PRAs to:
• Maintain active communication with employers and foreign partners to verify the location and safety of deployed workers;
• Conduct regular welfare checks and submit updated reports through the OFW Welfare Monitoring System;
• Develop contingency plans covering evacuation and emergency repatriation;
• Shoulder costs of rerouting or rebooking flights for OFWs affected by airspace closures; and
• Refrain from processing deployments to Jordan and Israel until clearance is issued.
'When we speak in a regulatory sense, they have to comply. Any agency that continues deployment despite the directive will face penalties,' Cacdac said.
'And yes, 'yong cost of travel hahabulin namin sila doon kung kami ang gumastos sa pagpapauwi (we will charge them the cost of travel because we're the ones paying for it),' he added
DMW said that as of June 19, it has assisted 58 stranded OFWs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for repatriation.
Of the stranded OFWs, 43 were bound for Israel and 15 for Jordan.
DMW also said it met with PRAs in Jordan to explain the current situation and limitations of OFW deployment.
'Handa silang mag-aantay at tumulong sa lahat nang na-stranded nating mga OFWs (they are willing to wait and help the stranded OFWs),' said DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia, relaying the response of Jordanian employers.
In a Reuters report, Iran and Israel targeted each other with missiles and airstrikes early on Saturday after Israel launched its biggest-ever air offensive against its longtime foe in a bid to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon.
Earlier today, the Department of Foreign Affairs said the 21 stranded Philippine government officials safely crossed into Jordan from Israel.
DFA also said the Philippine government is considering raising the alert levels on Israel and Iran as attacks between the two countries continue.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Bam Aquino: Ninoy's death was result of his love for country
Senator Bam Aquino leads the commemoration of the 42nd death anniversary of his uncle, Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr., in Paranaque City on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Manila's international airport was named after the former senator, considered an icon of Philippine democracy, after he was assassinated in 1983. DANNY PATA Senator Bam Aquino on Thursday called on Filipinos to continue fighting for freedom and justice as he paid tribute to his uncle, late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., on his 42nd death anniversary. In a Facebook post, Bam recalled his memories with Ninoy when the latter was still imprisoned and until he was assassinated at the Manila International Airport—now named in his honor—on August 21, 1983. "Nang pinili niyang umuwi noong 1983, alam niyang mapanganib, alam niyang maaari siyang makulong o mapatay. Pero pinili pa rin niya. Sapagkat para sa kanya, mas mahalaga ang makasama ang sariling bayan kaysa manatili sa Amerika na ligtas at mapayapa," Bam Aquino said. (When he decided to go back to the Philippines in 1983, he knew it was dangerous. He knew he could be imprisoned or killed. But he still chose to go home. Because for him, it is more important to be in his own country than to stay in America where it is safe and peaceful.) "Kaya't ang kanyang pagkamatay ay hindi lang basta dahil sa bala, ito'y bunga ng pinakamalalim na pagmamahal sa bayan. Hanggang ngayon, iyon ang pinakamalaking alaala niya para sa akin. Ang tunay na pamumuno ay nakaugat sa pagmamahal—sa Diyos, sa pamilya, at higit sa lahat, sa bayan," he added. (Ninoy's death was not just because of a bullet, it was the result of his deepest love for the Filipinos. To this day, that is his greatest memory for me. True leadership is rooted in love—for God, for family, and most of all, for the people.) Ninoy Aquino was a staunch critic of late former President Ferdinand Marcos, father of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. The elder Marcos was succeeded by Ninoy's widow, Corazon Aquino, following the EDSA People Power Revolution in February 1986. Bam Aquino on Thursday morning led the wreath-laying ceremony at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 to commemorate the 42nd death anniversary of his uncle. "Kung si Tito Ninoy, sa pinakamadilim na bahagi ng kanyang buhay at ng ating kasaysayan, ay hindi bumitaw sa pag-asa, paano pa tayo ngayon? Sa hirap o ginhawa, sa gulo man o katahimikan, tandaan natin: Yes, the Filipino is worth dying for and worth fighting for. Tuloy ang laban," the incumbent senator said. (If Uncle Ninoy didn't lose hope during the darkest time of his life and our history, what about us now? In times of hardship or comfort, in chaos or silence, let's remember: Yes, the Filipino is worth dying for and worth fighting for. The fight will continue.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Quiboloy camp: Let PH courts decide on case ahead of US extradition
The legal team of Filipino religious leader Apollo Quiboloy on Thursday called on the Marcos administration to let Philippine courts decide on the his legal case before rendering a decision on the United States' request for his extradition. In a message to reporters, lawyer Israelito Torreon said the Quiboloy camp recognizes that under the extradition treaty between the two countries, "it is within the discretion of the requested state (Philippines) whether to allow Pastor ACQ to be extradited to the US whether the case against him is pending or has already been decided against him." "Hence, we can only manifest our sincerest hope that the Philippine Government would exercise its sovereign option to allow the Philippine courts to fully exercise its jurisdiction over Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy's case before it will decide to transfer Pastor ACQ to the US," he added. GMA News Online reported Wednesday that documents supporting the US request to extradite Quiboloy were transmitted to the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) in June, citing sources who have knowledge of the process but spoke on condition of anonymity due to a lack of authority to speak on the issue. Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez confirmed that the United States has made a request for Quiboloy's extradition. "I can confirm the documents/evidence for the extradition request are all now with the DOJ. They have been there since June," Romualdez told GMA News Online. Romualdez said US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson and Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla were expected to meet next week to discuss the matter. Provisional arrest According to Torreon, Quiboloy's camp has yet to receive the documents related to the extradition request by the US. If the request has indeed been made, Torreon said, the Quiboloy camp "respect[s] the prerogative" of the United States to make such a move in line with its extradition treaty with the Philippines. While recognizing that the US may seek his provisional arrest, Torreon said this may not be necessary. "We are likewise cognizant that under Article 9 of the Treaty, the US can even request for the provisional arrest of the subject, however, we feel that such request for provisional arrest may not be necessary as of the moment," Torreon said. He pointed out that "the 'urgency' requirement under that section is absent in this case as Pastor Quiboloy is in jail awaiting resolution of his motion for reconsideration from the denial of his petition for bail." Last July, the Pasig Regional Trial Court-Branch 159 denied petitions for bail by Quiboloy and his co-accused in relation to his case for qualified trafficking for sexual abuse and labor exploitation. Quiboloy, indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2021, landed on the US Federal Bureau of Investigation's most wanted list. He is facing charges for conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion, sex trafficking of children, and bulk cash smuggling. In the Philippines, Quiboloy is also facing allegations of sexual and child abuse and human trafficking. He was placed under the custody of the police in September 2024. He is currently detained at the Pasig City jail. Quiboloy's camp has denied the allegations against him. — Joviland Rita/ VDV, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Ninoy Aquino Day shows PH ready for leadership that seeks reconciliation
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said the 42nd death anniversary of late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. calls for governing with sobriety, conscience and foresight that rises above quarrels and differences. Marcos made the remark as he joined the Filipino nation in commemorating the death of Aquino, who was a fierce critic of his father, late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. "This day, therefore, becomes an invitation to govern with sobriety, conscience, and foresight. Our commemoration achieves meaning when the lessons of the past are reflected in our actions and in the moral architecture of institutions," Marcos said in his message. "In honoring this day, the Republic signals its readiness to uphold leadership that strives towards wholeness and reconciliation," he added. Marcos said that through this observance, "we advance the work of statecraft: disciplined, steady, and shaped by the enduring imperative to choose peace above quarrel, and dignity beyond differences." He said Ninoy Aquino Day brings to light a chapter in our nation's shared story that continues to echo across generations and public memory. "The passage of time has allowed the country to approach this event with greater clarity and, therefore, with a deeper perspective. History invites reflection more than reaction and from that reflection arises a clearer understanding of civic duty," Marcos said. Marcos shared that as someone raised within a political tradition formed by profound transformation, he has come to understand that history offers less final judgment than continuing instruction. "It sharpens how we serve, how we listen, and how we bear the weight of an office with a greater purpose moving forward," Marcos said.
