Former Chelsea star Damien Duff, who now manages League of Ireland side, seen serving a touchline ban in a bizarre spot during Dublin derby

Daily Mail17-05-2025

Former Chelsea star Damien Duff was seen watching a match from a bizarre location on Friday night after being handed a touchline ban.
Duff, 46, was banned for his side Shelbourne's trip to Dublin rivals Bohemian in their League of Ireland clash.
He took charge of Shelbourne back in November 2021, guiding them to the title last season for the first time in 18 years.
The former Chelsea midfielder was suspended after being shown his fifth yellow card of the season during Shels' victory over St Patrick's Athletic last week.
However, that did not stop Duff from watching his side in action as they fell to a 1-0 defeated and finished the game with nine men.
Duff was seen in an unusual disguise that made him unrecognisable as he watched from a nearby hillside.
Taking to social media, football fans joked that his ploy was an example of 'brilliant entetainment' from the man who also played for Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Newcastle United during a lengthy playing career.
One user wrote: 'Interesting viewpoint for Damien Duff at Dalymount Park.'
A second added: 'Possibly my favourite LOI picture of all time. Damien Duff serving his touchline ban during Shelbourne's visit to Dalymount Park to take on Bohemians.'
Another quipped: 'Damien Duff in the ghillie suit.'
A fourth noted: 'Iconic already.'
A further comment read: 'Say what you like about him, but this guy's brilliant entertainment.'
Defeat to Bohs leaves Shelbourne sixth in the League of Ireland table after 16 games and seven points adrift of pace-setters Shamrock Rovers.
They return to action on Monday May 19, when they welcome Drogheda United to Tolka Park.

WSL revenues soar 34% despite drop in attendances

Revenues for Women's Super League (WSL) clubs soared by 34% during a record-breaking 2023-24 season, despite a drop in 12 teams in the WSL amassed a combined revenue of £65m, with each club generating more than £1m for the first from the Deloitte Sports Business Group found revenues grew from £48m in the 2022-23 season to £65m the following increase was driven by growth in commercial revenue, which increased by 53% from the previous season and now accounts for 40% of WSL clubs' total revenue. The revenue increases were largely driven by four clubs, with Arsenal (£15.3m), Chelsea (£11.5m), Manchester United (£9.2m) and Manchester City (£6.6m) accounting for two-thirds of the money made across the league. Matchday revenue increased, despite a 10% drop in attendances from the previous average league attendance dropped to 6,642. The drop, which followed England reaching the 2023 Women's World Cup final, contributed to pre-tax losses of £28m - up from £21m in 2022-23. However, Deloitte is forecasting revenues to top £100m across the league at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, helped by the upcoming Euros in Switzerland, "Women's football in England is evolving rapidly," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group."While challenges remain, it is clear there is potential for a passionate and engaged fanbase to drive the game's development."Capitalising on major international tournaments is important at specific points in time, but sustainable growth hinges on the domestic league's organic development."Bridge added that a "competitive balance is a key priority" if the WSL is to sustain long-term growth, with the gap widening between the top-earning clubs and the lowest-earning clubs in the league. Chelsea to make improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after £29.5m bid was rejected

Chelsea are to make an improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after their opening £29.5m bid was rejected. Dortmund want somewhere in the region of £40m for the former Manchester City youth prospect. The Blues are hoping to sign him before Tuesday's deadline to play in the Club World Cup and are prepared to offer a seven-year contract. City hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause for the 20-year-old, who left the club's academy in 2020 for Dortmund. Gittens, who also had brief spells at Chelsea and Reading as a youngster, made his senior debut in the Bundesliga days after his 18th birthday. He has racked up 106 appearances since, scoring 17 goals. Although, his breakout campaign came this past season, over the course of which he scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 48 games. Chelsea have also offered £12.6m for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Meanwile, Arsenal are finalising the £5m signing of Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea are interested in a number of defensive options, including Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. As well as Guehi, Chelsea remain keen on Jorrel Hato of Ajax. The highly rated centre-back made his senior debut at just 16 years old and became an undisputed starter for the Eredivisie side last season. Now 19, Hato has been appointed as one of Ajax's vice-captains, and was named Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2024-25.
