USC top recruit Alijjah Arenas needs surgery for knee injury and will be out 6 to 8 months
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alijah Arenas ' college basketball career is on hold before the highly touted freshman has played his first game.
He was diagnosed with a knee injury that will require surgery and rehab is expected to take at least six to eight months, the school said Wednesday.
"Alijah is a tremendous worker, teammate, competitor, and person,' USC coach Eric Musselman. 'He is understandably disappointed that he will not be able to take the court to start the season, but his health is our No. 1 priority. We have no doubt that he will come back even stronger. We look forward to supporting him during this process.'
Arenas, whose father Gilbert played in the NBA, was involved in a car crash that left him in an induced coma in April.
He crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a tree, smoke filled the front cabin and the doors wouldn't open. He spent nearly 10 minutes in the burning vehicle before bystanders helped pull him to safety.
Arenas was in the hospital for six days but did not suffer major injuries.
He is a five-star recruit and 2025 McDonald's All-American. The 2024 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year is also the top scorer in CIF LA City Section history, accumulating 3,002 points in three years of high school.

NEW YORK (AP) — Breanna Stewart is feeling better after suffering a bone bruise in her right knee late last month and hopes to be back by the end of the month. But definitely, like, before my birthday,' she said. Stewart celebrated her daughter Ruby's fourth birthday on Saturday, taking her to a trampoline park. 'I wasn't planning on being injured, so it's a little bit less than ideal,' she said. Stewart felt the injury in her knee in the loss to Los Angeles. She had three points and a rebound. ''It was like when I stepped, I just like felt something in my knee a little bit, but I don't know, I think I just irritated it,' she said. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Stewart was disappointed that she will miss all the games with Minnesota in a WNBA Finals rematch as the two teams play four times in a three-week span that Stewart is out for. 'I hate this, but I'll be on the bench,' she said.

Paula Badosa pulls out of the US Open. She hasn't played since a first-round loss at Wimbledon
NEW YORK (AP) — Former top-10 player Paula Badosa pulled out of the U.S. Open on Friday after dealing with a back injury that has sidelined her since a first-round loss at Wimbledon on June 30. The U.S. Tennis Association announced Badosa's withdrawal and said Jil Teichmann would replace her in the field. Alizé Cornet, who retired from tennis last year but returned to action this year, is the next woman in line to get a berth in the draw at Flushing Meadows if someone else pulls out. Tribute to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota disrupted at Wembley
LONDON (AP) — A tribute to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was disrupted on Sunday when some fans at the Community Shield match failed to observe a moment's silence. Before the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley both teams and their staff stood silently to commemorate the brothers — who died in a car accident in Spain in July — but loud voices could be heard in the crowd, which prompted some boos.
