‘I prefer to remember him smiling': Flavio Briatore explains why he stays away from Michael Schumacher
Michael Schumacher
's life-altering skiing crash, former Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore has offered one of the few fresh glimpses into the F1 legend's closed world. Speaking to
Italy's Corriere della Sera
, and echoed in follow-up coverage across international outlets, the 74-year-old said he still speaks with Schumacher's wife, Corinna, but chooses not to visit the seven-time world champion at their Swiss home.
His reasons shed light on both a long, private friendship and the painful reality of Schumacher's condition.
A friend who keeps his distance
'If I close my eyes, I see Michael smiling after a victory. I'd rather remember him like that than see him lying in bed,' Briatore told the paper.
Those words capture a dilemma familiar to many who have watched loved ones suffer catastrophic injury: the pull between loyalty and the wish to preserve happier memories.
Schumacher, 56, has not been seen in public since the off-piste accident in Méribel, France, on 29 December 2013, which left him with severe brain trauma.
In steady touch with Corinna
Although he stays away physically, Briatore said the lines of communication remain open. 'Corinna and I talk often,' he revealed, underscoring the mutual trust that still links Schumacher's inner circle to the man who first spotted the German's talent in the early 1990s.

Corinna has famously guarded her husband's privacy, releasing virtually no medical detail beyond confirming that he continues rehabilitation at their Lake Geneva estate. Briatore's comment respects that secrecy while hinting at the solidarity friends maintain from a distance.
The Benetton bond that changed F1
Briatore's connection to Schumacher runs deep: as Benetton team principal he fast-tracked a 22-year-old rookie into the seat in 1991, then built the outfit around him.
Schumacher repaid that faith with back-to-back world titles in 1994 and 1995—championships that launched a career which ultimately tied Lewis Hamilton's record of seven crowns.
gpfans.com
That shared history explains why Briatore's words carry weight; few others were as close during the German's meteoric rise.
A guarded legacy, a public yearning
Since the accident, official updates on Schumacher have been scant. Even small gestures—like fellow great Sir Jackie Stewart carrying a helmet bearing the initials 'MS' during a Bahrain GP lap earlier this year—make headlines because information is so rare.
Briatore's decision 'not to intrude,' as some supporters interpret it, reinforces the family's stance: Michael's recovery is private, and memories of his brilliance on track remain the picture they wish the world to keep.
Why Briatore's stance matters
Fans, sponsors and former colleagues still crave news of one of motorsport's biggest icons. Yet Briatore's comments remind observers that respect sometimes means restraint. By choosing memories of a champion lifting trophies over the reality of long-term care, he signals that Schumacher's competitive spirit—not his injury—should define his story.
As the F1 paddock rolls on without the driver who once owned its record books, that perspective may be the closest thing to an update the public receives—and, Briatore suggests, perhaps the fairest way to honor a friend.

Luis Díaz scores for Bayern to win German Supercup on his debut
BERLIN (AP) — Luis Díaz scored and won a title on his Bayern Munich debut after a 2-1 win over Stuttgart in the German Supercup on Saturday. HT Image Harry Kane also scored for the Bundesliga champion to win the least important trophy of the season, opening the scoring in the 18th minute when the ball dropped kindly for him to shoot inside the left post. Bayern dominated the early stages but Stuttgart fought back with Nick Woltemade drawing a good save from Manuel Neuer. Woltemade was and possibly still is a summer transfer target for Bayern. The clubs have so far been unable to agree on a fee despite the player's openness to the move. Díaz joined Bayern from Liverpool last month and remains the club's biggest deal of the offseason. Neuer produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Jamie Leweling two minutes before Díaz scored in the 77th when Leweling was receiving treatment after clashing knees with Bayern's Sacha Boey. Leweling recovered and headed Stuttgart's consolation in stoppage time. It's the fourth year that German soccer officials have staged what was the traditional curtain-raiser for the season on the same weekend as the first round of the German Cup, forcing the participants to postpone their cup games. Stuttgart starts its title defense at Eintracht Braunschweig on Aug. 26 with Bayern playing third-division side Wehen Wiesbaden the following day. Wolfsburg routed fifth-tier SV Hemelingen 9-0 in the first round of the German Cup, and other Bundesliga teams also enjoyed big wins over lower-league opposition. Two-time champion Leipzig twice came from behind to beat fourth-tier SV Sandhausen 4-2 with new signings Ezechiel Banzuzi and Yan Diomande scoring. Heidenheim won at 10-man fourth-tier Bahlinger SC 5-0, Hoffenheim won at third-division Hansa Rostock 4-0, and Freiburg won at fourth-tier club Sportfreunde Lotte 2-0. Hamburger SV, which clinched its return to the Bundesliga last season, survived a scare at fifth-tier Pirmasens, equalizing late to send the match to extra time, where Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer headed the winner for 2-1. Königsdörffer was playing for Hamburg only because a proposed early August move to Nice broke down after his medical check with the French team. Bochum also needed a late goal to level before prevailing at nine-man Dynamo Berlin 3-1. St. Pauli needed penalties to get past fourth-tier Hamburg rival Eintracht Norderstedt, while fourth-tier Bavarian team FV Illertissen upset Miroslav Klose's Nuremberg by winning 6-5 on penalties after their game ended 3-3 with extra time. Also, second-division side Darmstadt won at fourth-tier Lübeck 2-1, and third-division Energie Cottbus won 1-0 to upset Hannover, which is playing in the division above. ___ AP soccer:

Did Teyana Taylor break her divorce deal? Judge fines singer $70K in Iman Shumpert lawsuit
Iman Shumpert recently won in court (Image via Getty Images) This week, the divorce drama between free agent Iman Shumpert and his ex-wife Teyana Taylor took a new turn. The NBA player won the lawsuit against the singer, who was fined $70,000 for breaking the conditions of her divorce decree from 2024. According to a report from Us Weekly, she was convicted in contempt of court and was forced to pay the large sum to her ex-husband. Teyana Taylor was also asked by the judge to cover Iman Shumpert's legal costs. The judge further rejected her request that the player cover her legal costs. Iman Shumpert wins $70K lawsuit against ex-wife Teyana Taylor over divorce decree violation The legal battle of Iman Shumpert vs. Teyana Taylor is still continuing. Even though it was agreed in the divorce settlement that neither of them would reveal a word about the verdict, the singer spoke about the divorce in an online video in March. The clip later went viral on social media. In her footage, she appeared to be referring to her ex-husband, as she was heard stating: 'I have the proof that you're paying people to post this stuff.' According to Vibe magazine, she said in the video that she had proof that the NBA player had supposedly given the media access to the specifics of their divorce. In its most recent ruling, the court ruled that the singer was unable to provide evidence to support the statements she made in the video. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Shree TMT : The Steel You Can Trust Shree TMT Bars Learn More Undo The court document read: 'The court finds [Taylor] in violation of the Final Judgment and Decree of Divorce and is in willful contempt. It further read: 'It appears Taylor and her counsel failed to engage in even a minimal amount of diligence to determine whether her claim of contempt had any factual support at all before the petition was filed.' According to the court ruling, Teyana Taylor also declined to respond to enquiries from Iman Shumpert "about her assets and her income, further stating that such information was completely irrelevant to any issue." She further said that the former Brooklyn Nets player reportedly gave the media details about their divorce. The judge, however, decided that she lacked sufficient proof to back up that assertion.
