
Tariffs threaten Asian beauty product boom in US
In the United States and elsewhere, Korean cosmetics, or K-beauty for short, have dominated the trend. A craze for all-in-one 'BB creams' — a combination of moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen — morphed into a fascination with 10-step rituals and ingredients like snail mucin, heartleaf and rice water.

Vehicles and electronics may be South Korea's top exports to the U.S. by value, but the country shipped more skin care and cosmetics to the U.S. than any other last year, according to data from market research company Euromonitor. France, with storied beauty brands like L'Oreal and Chanel, was second, Euromonitor said.

Statistics compiled by the U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent federal agency, show the U.S. imported $1.7 billion worth of South Korean cosmetics in 2024, a 54% increase from a year earlier.
'Korean beauty products not only add a lot of variety and choice for Americans, they really embraced them because they were offering something different for American consumers,' Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said.
Along with media offerings such as 'Parasite' and 'Squid Games,' and the popularity of K-pop bands like BTS, K-beauty has helped boost South Korea's profile globally, she said.
'It's all part and parcel really of the same thing,' Lovely said. 'And it can't be completely stopped by a 25% tariff, but it's hard to see how it won't influence how much is sold in the U.S. And I think what we're hearing from producers is that it also really decreases the number of products they want to offer in this market.'
Senti Senti, a retailer that sells international beauty products at two New York boutiques and through an e-commerce site, saw a bit of 'panic buying' by customers when Trump first imposed punitive tariffs on goods from specific countries, manager Winnie Zhong said.
The rush slowed down after the president paused the new duties for 90 days and hasn't picked up again, Zhong said, even with Trump saying on July 7 that a 25% tax on imports from Japan and South Korea would go into effect on Aug. 1.
Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia subsequently reached agreements with the Trump administration that lowered the tariff rates their exported goods faced — in Japan's case, from 25% to 15% — still higher than the current baseline of 10% tariff.

But South Korea has yet to clinch an agreement, despite having a free trade agreement since 2012 that allowed cosmetics and most other consumer goods to enter the U.S. tax-free.
Since the first store owned by Senti Senti opened 16 years ago, beauty products from Japan and South Korea became more of a focus and now account for 90% the stock. The business hasn't had to pass on any tariff-related costs to customers yet, but that won't be possible if the products are subject to a 25% import tax, Zhong said.
'I'm not really sure where the direction of K-beauty will go to with the tariffs in place, because one of the things with K-beauty or Asian beauty is that it's supposed to be accessible pricing,' she said.
Devoted fans of Asian cosmetics will often buy direct from Asia and wait weeks for their packages to arrive because the products typically cost less than they do in American stores. Rather than stocking up on their favorite sunscreens, lip tints and toners, some shoppers are taking a pause due to the tariff uncertainty.
Los Angeles resident Jen Chae, a content creator with over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, has explored Korean and Japanese beauty products and became personally intrigued by Chinese beauty brands over the last year.
When the tariffs were first announced, Chae temporarily paused ordering from sites such as YesStyle.com, a shopping platform owned by an e-commerce company based in Hong Kong. She did not know if she would have to pay customs duties on the products she bought or the ones brands sent to her as a creator.

'I wasn't sure if those would automatically charge the entire package with a blanket tariff cost, or if it was just on certain items,' Chae said. On its website, YesStyle says it will give customers store credit to reimburse them for import charges.
At Ohlolly, an online store focused on Korean products, owners Sue Greene and Herra Namhie are taking a similar pause.
They purchase direct from South Korea and from licensed wholesalers in the U.S., and store their inventory in a warehouse in Ontario, California. After years of no duties, a 25% import tax would create a 'huge increase in costs to us,' Namhie said.
She and Greene made two recent orders to replenish their stock when the tariffs were at 10%. But they have put further restocks on hold 'because I don't think we can handle 25%,' Namhie said. They'd have to raise prices, and then shoppers might go elsewhere.
The business owners and sisters are holding out on hope the U.S. and Korea settle on a lower tariff or carve out exceptions for smaller ticket items like beauty products. But they only have two to four months of inventory in their warehouse. They say that in a month they'll have to make a decision on what products to order, what to discontinue and what prices will have to increase.
Rachel Weingarten, a former makeup artist who writes a daily beauty newsletter called 'Hello Gorgeous!,' said while she's devoted to K-beauty products like lip masks and toner pads, she doesn't think stockpiling is a sound practice.
'Maybe one or two products, but natural oils, vulnerable packaging and expiration dates mean that your products could go rancid before you can get to them,' she said.

Weingarten said she'll still buy Korean products if prices go up, but that the beauty world is bigger than one country. 'I'd still indulge in my favorites, but am always looking for great products in general,' she said.
Bhasin, in Menlo Park, California, plans to keep buying her face masks too, even if the price goes up, because she likes the quality of Korean masks.
'If prices will go up, I will not shift to U.S. products,' she said. 'For face masks, I feel there are not a ton of solid and reliable substitutes in the U.S.'

In the 2016 and 2020 elections, a significant majority of white voters, particularly those without a college degree, rallied behind Trump's message on issues like immigration, the economy and national identity, while 56 percent voted for Trump in 2024. But polls now suggest Trump is losing support from some of his most reliable supporters. The decline comes amid growing pessimism about the direction of the country. Just 39 percent of white voters said the U.S. is "getting better," down 2 points from June, while 53 percent believe things are getting worse. Economic Concerns Undercut Confidence Trump's economic approval has also slipped. Just 45 percent now approve of his handling of the economy, down from 49 percent in June. Views on inflation are also negative, with 54 percent disapproving, up from 52 percent last month. Trade policy is another area of vulnerability. With Trump's August 1 tariff deadline for foreign governments to reach trade deals with the U.S. looming, 52 percent of white voters said American consumers would be hurt the most by tariffs, while only a minority backed Trump's approach, signaling a level of anxiety about the economic impact of the tariffs. The potential impact of Trump's tariffs is significant. If deals are not reached, tariffs on U.S. food imports are scheduled to rise for more than 80 countries—affecting nearly 75 percent of U.S. food imports and likely leading to higher prices for consumers, according to the Tax Foundation. But federal government data released on Wednesday shows the U.S. economy has mostly avoided a feared downturn from Trump's tariffs introduced earlier this year. Unemployment remains near historic lows, and while job growth has cooled, it's still strong, ABC News reported. However, inflation hit 2.7 percent in June, up from 2.4 percent the previous month, according to the Consumer Price Index, but still lower than the 3 percent when Trump took office. Overall, economists estimate the economy grew at a 3 percent annual rate from April to June, bouncing back from a -0.5 percent decline in the previous quarter. A boost in consumer spending helped propel the economic surge, the U.S. Commerce Department said. And the poll shows that assessments of the broader economy have remained steady over the past month. But 46 percent still say things are getting worse—far more than those who say the economy is getting better or has stayed the same. And perceptions of personal financial well-being deteriorated. Only 16 percent said they are better off financially than a year ago, unchanged from June, but those saying they are worse off rose to 36 percent, up 5 points. Epstein Fallout Casts Shadow But it's not just the economy that threatens Trump's standing with white voters. Professor William Hall, an adjunct professor of political science and business at Webster University in St. Louis, told Newsweek the handling of the Epstein controversy may be contributing to Trump's declining support. While fluctuations in approval are typical, Hall argues that "what appears to be different in this case" is that the shift may be driven by discontent among White voters—including MAGA supporters—who have long been Trump's most loyal base, but are now showing signs of "dissatisfaction, disagreement, and perhaps even disgust" with Trump's handling of the Epstein files. The survey shows that the newly released Jeffrey Epstein-related findings appear to be weighing on Trump's image among white voters. A majority—56 percent—disapprove of how he has handled the situation. Some 39 percent of white voters believe Trump was involved in crimes connected to Epstein. Over 80 percent support releasing the full Epstein files, and 63 percent believe the government is engaged in a cover-up. "This could signal the beginnings of a break in support among a potentially significant portion of his formerly solid political base," Hall said. "Additionally, the highly sensitive nature of the allegations—involving abuse of children and a possible cover-up—has triggered an unusual level of friction between Trump and his supporters, something we haven't seen before. "While there may still be time to repair the relationship, the outcome remains unclear. With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, whether the Epstein Files controversy—and the Trump-MAGA rift—can be resolved is very much in question." Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender, died by suicide in jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. There is no evidence that Trump was involved in Epstein's crimes. Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s but maintains that he cut ties with him well before Epstein's 2006 arrest. A recent Wall Street Journal report uncovered a 2003 birthday card Trump allegedly sent to Epstein. The card included a drawing of a naked woman and the message: "We have certain things in common... may every day be another wonderful secret." Last week, the White House said Trump kicked Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club "for being a creep." On Tuesday, Trump said he fell out with Epstein after he "stole" young women who worked at his Mar-a-Lago club spa. He said that included Virginia Giuffre, who said she began working at Mar-a-Lago in the summer of 2000, when she was 16. According to court documents unsealed in 2019, Giuffre alleged that Ghislaine Maxwell recruited her to give massages to Epstein while she was employed at the resort's spa. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls Giuffre later accused Prince Andrew and Epstein of sexually abusing her—allegations both men denied. Republicans accused Biden of trying to bribe voters. Now they're doing the same.
I shouldn't have to remind a sitting senator, much less the president, of basic economics, but here goes: You can't just hand out money. On July 28, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, announced legislation that would provide Americans with $600 'rebate checks,' supposedly due to the vast swathes of money being collected from President Donald Trump's tariff policy. Hawley's proposal comes just days after Trump suggested the idea himself. I shouldn't have to remind a sitting senator, much less the president, of basic economics, but here goes. You can't just hand out money; doing so is either inflationary or adds to the deficit. MAGA is hurting Americans' wallets through tariff policy, and pretending as if the results have been so beneficial that we can afford to pay Americans a share of the benefit. All of this is an economically illiterate scheme to bribe voters, nothing more. It's not conservative fiscal policy. None of it. Josh Hawley's rebate check proposal built on bad fiscal policy Hawley's proposal doesn't function as a rebate because the government doesn't have money to rebate. It's not as if Americans have paid too much in taxes, and the government is now returning those funds to their rightful owners. "Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families' savings and livelihoods," Halwey said in a statement. "Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump's tariffs are returning to this country.' For Americans to truly experience a rebate, the government needs to be in a budget surplus. If we are in a budget deficit, any form of spending comes from two sources. The first is through printing new money, which is the simplest way to create inflation. The second way is through borrowing money, which adds to the national debt, requiring higher revenue in the future to cover current spending. In the first eight months of fiscal year 2025, the federal budget deficit totaled $1.4 trillion. Such dire finances are worsened by the fact that Republicans passed a budget in July that is expected to skyrocket the deficit by, after accounting for interest costs, roughly $3.8 trillion over the next decade. If the $600 rebate were claimed by every man, woman and child in America, as Hawley suggested, this proposal would cost more than $205 billion. Even if narrowed to just those who filed an individual tax return, of which there were roughly 163 million in 2023, that cost would total nearly $98 billion. The United States has only generated about $125 billion from tariffs as of the end of July, a sizable increase from previous years but not enough to cover anything close to our budget deficit. As it is, Hawley is promising to refund Americans for revenue that doesn't come close to paying for all of our government spending. Republicans, under MAGA leadership, are continuing to run our country's finances into the ground. MAGA is playing voters for fools with tariffs Tariffs, in themselves, mean that retailers inevitably pass along these additional import costs to producers. It is a cruel joke to hike people's cost of living through tariffs, then pretend to pay them back with money you don't have, in turn causing more costs to taxpayers down the road. In reality, all of this is just another populist attempt to bribe Americans into voting for more MAGA economics (if you can call it that). The economic illiteracy of the MAGA movement is frankly tiring. Federal spending is a political tool to entice Americans to vote MAGA, while Republican policies actually hurt working Americans. Republicans often criticize Democrats when they attempt to employ similar strategies, as seen with the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness. But now, here are Republican leaders proposing to bribe voters. Hawley seemingly hasn't learned his lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic, in which he was a cosponsor of stimulus checks. The massive rise in government spending during the pandemic was a chief cause of the inflation that followed, and such action now is likely to yield the same results. Now, Trump and Hawley are drawing from the same playbook. If they had their way, America would be saddled with the financial consequences while they remain just fine. Hawley is one of the worst offenders of basic economics in the Senate and is much closer to a fiscal socialist than any sort of conservative. It is worrying that he continues to float his damaging proposals. Nobody in Trump's faction of the GOP has any interest in producing sound economic policy. Their only motivation is attempting to buy votes. Hawley's proposals only reveal that fact even more.
