Andhra's Guntur tops statewide sanitation survey with 67% rating

GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has secured the top spot in a Statewide urban cleanliness survey conducted via Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) on July 1, thanks to a special sanitation drive and meticulous micro-level planning.
Guntur received the highest overall public satisfaction rating of 67%, edging out larger cities such as Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, which scored 66% each. Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram followed closely with 65%. Other high-performing cities included Nellore (64%), Tirupati, Anantapur, and Kurnool (63% each), and Kadapa (62%).
The IVRS survey evaluated sanitation performance in three categories—door-to-door garbage collection, garbage removal within 24 hours, and overall sanitation satisfaction. Guntur emerged as the top performer in all three areas. In overall citizen satisfaction, it led with 74.4%, followed by Rajamahendravaram (74.3%), Chittoor and Machilipatnam (72.4%), and Nellore and Kakinada (72.2%).

Demolition of Brodipet ROB commences in Guntur

The demolition of the Brodipet Road Over Bridge (ROB) started in the early hours of Saturday (August 09) as part of its planned reconstruction, prompting a full suspension of traffic on the stretch. To ease congestion during the works, educational institutions in the city have been asked to operate in two shifts, 'A' shift from 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and 'B' shift from 9.15 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. Guntur Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu announced the decision during a coordination meeting with representatives of schools and colleges, education department officials, GMC staff, and traffic police. He said that as the demolition is the first phase of the reconstruction, coordinated measures with schools will help prevent traffic chaos. Traffic police have already cleared encroachments on alternate routes, he added, noting that proceedings on revised school timings will be issued soon. Adjustments may be made after monitoring the situation for a few days. The Commissioner also urged active participation in the upcoming Har Ghar Tiranga campaign from August 13 to 15. Educational institutions have been asked to organise painting, essay writing, elocution, and rangoli competitions on the theme, set up selfie points, and ensure the hoisting of plastic-free national flags on campuses, public buildings, and houses. Deputy Commissioner Ch. Srinivas, City Planner Rambabu, in-charge SE Sundararami Reddy, Traffic SI Ashok Kumar, Manager Balaji Basha, and education department officials were present.

Industrial effluents flow into drain in Ghaziabad, locals raise health concerns

Ghaziabad: Black oil residue has been seeping into drainage systems in Sahibabad Site IV industrial area. The situation has become critical as chemical discharge from surrounding industries has transformed the drain water into a black, polluted stream, triggering serious environmental and health concerns. Dr Sunil Vaid, a resident of neighbouring Vaishali, wrote to the regional manager of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the city health officer, stating the significant presence of black oil in the drains, which is a cause of substantial environmental damage and poses a health hazard. "The water has become completely black and foul-smelling. It appears that no restrictions are being enforced on industries discharging their waste into the drains," said Vaid, who also sent a copy of the letter to the GMC commissioner.
