Al Attiyah earns his 17th Jordan Rally triumph
Dead Sea
Qatar's Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah won all but one of the 12 gravel special stages on his way to a comfortable 17th victory in the Jordan Rally on Saturday, The success took the iconic Skoda Fabia RS driver to a record 90th career MERC rally win, as he closes in on an unprecedented 20th regional title since 2003. The new partnership with his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera has a 100% winning record with the duo now taking victories at the opening four rounds of this year's FIA Middle East Rally Championship in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and now Jordan.
Al Attiyah said, 'I am so happy to win again here in Jordan for the 17th time. This means a lot to me. This year we have won every rally so far. It feels like a good year, leading the Middle East Championship and leading the W2RC. For this rally, I will give it 10 out of 10. Today, we controlled the pace and tried to make a gap in case we had a puncture.'
Abdullah Al Rawahi and his Jordanian co-driver Ata Al Hmoud maintained the pressure on the Qatari throughout day one but a time-consuming puncture delayed the Omani on Saturday's opening Panorama stage and a second issue on stage 10 proved too much for the 2023 regional champion. He finished second overall.
Al Rawahi said: 'It was a long two days for us. The first day was quite good, especially with the pace and we were very close to Nasser. Unfortunately, today we had some punctures and we lost some time. Overall, we are very happy with our performance. It has been the closest we have been to him in the battle.
'We don't really have enough seat time in the car. After this rally I have three months off not really driving my car. My car is also an older generation and there is experience difference between me and Nasser. That is why it is good that he is in the championship. He helps us to push and get closer to him. It is still good. We wanted to win but we are still happy.'
Qatar's Abdulaziz Al Kuwari and his Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore tried different set-ups with their Citroen C3 but struggled to match the pace of the leading duo on this occasion. They did enough to round off the podium places.
Rakan Al Rashed's main target was to finish the event and the Saudi again teamed up with Portugal's Hugo Magalhaes in a Jameel Motorsport Toyota GR Yaris. Cruelly, his Yaris sustained substantial damage after an accident on the penultimate stage he was forced out. Lebanese driver Bassel Abu Hamdan and his co-driver Firas Elias benefitted from his demise to round off the top four in a Skoda Fabia.
Oman's Abdullah Al Zubair led the MERC2 field from start-to-finish with co-driver Taha Al Tadjali to strengthen his push for the overall title. Fellow countryman Zakariya Al Aamri had arrived in Jordan with a 15-point lead over Al Zubair but his rival's success and fifth place overall has thrown the battle wide open with two rallies remaining. Al Aamri finished second in the category and eighth overall.
Al Zubair said: 'We are happy with this result, It is a very difficult race. It is also very hot. It was our first time here. The first day we were flat out and won every stage. Today, we took it slow. We had a good lead and the strategy paid off.'
Nasser Khalifa Al Atya continued his run of consistent form to bring his Ford Fiesta to the Dead Sea finish in sixth overall with co-driver Ziad Chehab. That result was sufficient for the Qatari veteran to seal success in the inaugural FIA Master MERC Championship with two rounds to run.
The Jordanian duo of Sheikh Bader Al Fayez and Shadi Shaban were classified in seventh and ninth overall.
Tenth place was sufficient for Rashid Al Mohannadi to take victory over Saad Al Harqan and Payyaakkal 'Saneem' Panikkaveettil in the FIA MERC4 category and to seal the championship title in his Peugeot 208 with two rounds to spare.
Al Rawahi earned victory in the second round of the Jordan National Championship with Shaker Jweihan claiming second place ahead of Sheikh Bader Al Fayez.
This year's Jordan Rally was supported by Zain Jordan, Guarantee Travel Group, Hala and Bliss FM, Markazia and Toyota Gazoo Racing Jordan.
The FIA Middle East Rally Championship continues in Lebanon on September 5th-7th.

FIBA Asia Cup participation good for Qatar team's future: Saadoun Al Kuwari
Tribune News Network Doha The 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17, concluded with notable achievements for the Qatar national basketball team. Organized by FIBA Asia, the tournament featured 16 teams, with Qatar competing in a challenging Group A alongside defending champions Australia (winners in 2017 and 2022), Lebanon, a four-time finalist and the most successful Arab team in the competition's history (2001, 2005, 2007, 2022), and South Korea, a powerhouse in Asian basketball. Historically, Qatar has been a strong contender among Arab teams, securing podium finishes in 2003 and 2005, making them one of the region's most accomplished sides in the tournament's history. Qatar's 2025 roster was a blend of youthful energy and seasoned talent, included 12 players: Brandon Goodwin, Alen Hadzibegovic, Seydou Ndai, Zain Eddin Badri, Tyler Harris, Aladji Magassa, Omar Saad, Mustafa Ndao, Mohamed Bashir, Babacar Dieng, Abdulrahman Saad, and Mahmoud Darwish. With an average age of 25.2 years, Qatar fielded the youngest Arab team in the tournament, showcasing a promising future. The team also boasted an average height of 197 cm, providing a significant advantage in rebounding and interior defense compared to their competitors. Under the guidance of Turkish head coach Hakan Demir, Qatar underwent an intensive preparation program that included training camps in Doha, Turkey, and South Korea, as well as friendly matches against high-caliber opponents. The coaching staff focused on enhancing physical fitness, strengthening defensive strategies, and developing fast-paced offensive plays that capitalized on the team's height and transition speed. Qatar's participation in the Asia Cup served as a critical step in their long-term strategy to bolster their continental presence and prepare for the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, set to begin in November 2025. The tournament provided Qatar's young players with invaluable experience against diverse playing styles, particularly those of Australia and South Korea, while testing their readiness for future global competitions. Entering the tournament, Qatar aimed to advance beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds, despite facing formidable opponents known for their speed and long-range shooting. The team relied on its fighting spirit and determination to deliver a competitive performance. Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams, emphasized the significance of the tournament: 'Our participation in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah is part of a clear strategic plan by the Qatar Basketball Federation to build a strong generation of players equipped with the physical and technical skills needed to compete at the continental and international levels in the long term. 'For months, we have prepared our team through rigorous training programs and international camps, alongside friendly matches against top-tier teams to test and enhance our players' capabilities and cohesion. Our squad's average age of 25.2 years reflects our investment in the future, balanced by the experience of veteran players who guide and support their younger teammates. 'Facing powerhouses like Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea in our group provided a golden opportunity to gain experience and elevate our performance. These teams represent diverse, fast-paced playing styles, making the matches invaluable for our development. 'Our primary goal was to deliver a respectable performance and progress beyond the group stage. More importantly, we aimed to instill a winning mentality and self-confidence in our players while building a solid foundation for Qatar's basketball future. 'We've received positive feedback from coaches and officials at the tournament, who praised our players' level and fighting spirit. This reinforces our belief that Qatar's basketball future is bright if we continue on this path.' Looking ahead to FIBA World Cup 2027 Qatar's participation in the Asia Cup is a stepping stone toward the FIBA World Cup 2027, which Qatar will host for the first time in the Middle East from August 27 to September 12, 2027. The tournament will feature 32 teams, with matches played across four main arenas, culminating in the final at Lusail Arena. The World Cup qualifiers, involving 80 nations competing for 31 spots, will begin in November 2025. Qatar, as the host nation, is automatically qualified and has been drawn in Group D alongside Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and India for the Asia-Oceania qualifiers. The top three teams from each group will advance to the second round, where they will be split into two groups, with the top three teams from each, plus the highest-ranking fourth-placed team, securing World Cup berths. The qualifiers will be conducted over six windows from November 2025 to March 2027, with matches played in a home-and-away format. Guedes, Omar steal show as Al Rayyan and Al Shamal make winning starts
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan and Al Shamal made a winning starts to their campaign in 2025-2026 season of Qatar Stars League on Thursday. While Al Rayyan scored a 3-1 comeback victory against promoted side and last season's Second Division champions Al Sailiya, Al Shamal prevailed 2-0 over Al Ahli. It was the Brazilian Roger Guedes struck two goals for Al Rayyan at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, scoring one from the spot in the 82nd minute before putting the icing on the cake in the 90th minute following a defensive error in a highly-entertaining encounter. Earlier, Hadi Ali registered the first goal of the season for Al Sailiya in the 20th minute to set the tone before an unmarked Julien de Sart rifled home a belter, inches from the edge of the 25-yard box in the 68th minute to restore parity for Al Rayyan, who were earlier denied a penalty call via VAR decision in the 25th minute. The win will doubtlessly serve as a morale booster for Portuguese coach Artur Jorge's men, who had finished the last season in fifth place, while Al Sailiya, who are experiencing a new lease of life in the top division, will be now aiming to bounce back in their next match. Omar stars for Al Shamal In the late evening clash, Al Shamal's 21-year-old Mohammed Rafiq Omar starred with a goal and an assist as the side beat Al Ahli 2-0 at the Khalifa International Stadium. Omar scored in the 88th minute while Mohamed Manai struck earlier in the 40th minute with a fine side flick. It was a delightful first win of the new season for Al Shamal, who had finished sixth in the previous season while Al Ahli were fourth. Al Shamal broke past Al Ahli's defence first in the opening half as Omar worked his way past defenders before providing Manai, also 21, with a perfect ball. Stationed near the left post, Manai caught the cross making a right-foot flick into the net past a hapless Al Ahli goalkeeper Yazan Naim. Al Shamal had earlier scored in the 17th minute but unsuccessfully when Omar had made a breakaway to move in and strike but the goal was ruled out by VAR for off-side. Omar however hit back late in the second session as he latched on to a defensive lapse to dash in, and with a cool head dribbled past the goalkeeper and a chasing defender to make it 2-0. Al Ahli had their moments but weren't forceful enough. An in dipping free kick from Julian Draxler was cut off by Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck in the 68th minute, who had a good evening under the bar. On Friday, Al Arabi will meet Al Wakrah while Al Gharafa will play Umm Salal.
