CARDIFF, Wales (AP) — The top official in Welsh rugby is stepping away to undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
Abi Tierney, chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union, will leave her role temporarily on Aug. 22 'to focus fully on my health and recovery.'
'I am grateful for the support I have already received from my family, friends, and colleagues,' Tierney said, 'and I am confident in the team's ability to continue our work during my absence.'
Tierney has just overseen the appointment of Steve Tandy as coach of the men's national team, which went on a record 18-match losing run before a win in Japan last month.

Fabrizio Romano confirms green light IMMINENT in Alexander Isak deal

Liverpool have spent the last few weeks locked in a transfer battle for Alexander Isak. Ever since Newcastle rejected Liverpool's opening transfer offer - reported to be in the region of £110m - it's been speculated that sporting director Richard Hughes could be back with another bid. 🔴 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Romano optimistic Newcastle will land striker Hugo Ekitike was on the list - as were Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo - but all have moved elsewhere with Ekitike taking to life at Liverpool with relish. Newcastle won't dare sell Isak until a new forward or two are sourced. Only then will Liverpool be permitted to wrap up a deal for 25-year-old Isak. But the Reds have got reason to believe that a deal could be edging closer. Fabrizio Romano claims that a 'green light' will soon come in the Magpies' chase for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. Newcastle expecting Wissa "green light" The knock-on effect of that deal will include Isak perhaps being allowed his dream move to Anfield. Of course, Newcastle will also need to go shopping for a new No9. 'Obviously Newcastle need a replacement – maybe even two strikers,' the Italian transfer supremo told his YouTube audience. 'We know the situation with Yoane Wissa at Brentford: Brentford are still blocking him, but Newcastle remain confident they'll get the green light. 'Then they would move to sign a new striker, because they need a proper number nine before they can allow Isak to leave.'

Mbappé converts penalty kick as Real Madrid beats Osasuna 1-0 in Spanish league opener

MADRID (AP) — Kylian Mbappé got off to a scoring start in his second season with Real Madrid, leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Osasuna in their Spanish league opener Tuesday. Mbappé, the leading scorer in his debut with Madrid last season, converted a 51st-minute penalty kick to give the hosts the victory. A nice run by Mbappé through the right side of the area, followed by a neat cutback move, prompted the foul. The goal gave new coach Xabi Alonso a winning debut in his first full season with the club. The former Madrid player arrived before the Club World Cup to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who left to take the Brazil job. Alonso started the match with three of the club's new signings for the season — left back Álvaro Carreras, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold and central defender Dean Huijsen. Teenage forward Franco Mastantuono came off the bench to replace Brahim Díaz in the 68th, being loudly cheered by the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Some fans had not been happy after the former River Plate player praised Lionel Messi — the fellow Argentine who was a star at rival Barcelona — during his introductory news conference. The 18-year-old Mastantuono had a chance to score in the 89th, but his shot from inside the area was saved by the Osasuna goalkeeper. Osasuna defender Abel Bretones was sent off in stoppage time with a straight red card for a high arm to block Madrid forward Gonzalo García. 'They dominated, we knew it was going to be like that,' Osasuna midfielder Rubén García said. 'We played a good game but couldn't get too close to their goal. In the end, they deserved the victory.' Madrid forward Rodrygo stayed on the bench the whole match, intensifying speculation of a possible transfer. The game was played Tuesday instead of last weekend along with the rest of opening matches because Madrid's players needed more rest following the team's participation at the Club World Cup. Madrid's attempt to delay its debut even further was denied by the league. Madrid controlled possession — more than 70% — but struggled to break through the tight Osasuna defense early, threatening with a few long-range shots. Mbappé had one of Madrid's best first-half chances with a curling shot from inside the area that just missed the top corner, but finally broke through with the winner early in the second half as Madrid continued to press forward. He sent a low shot from the spot into the right side of the net as the goalkeeper dived the other way. Barcelona began its title defense with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid squandered a late lead in a 2-1 loss at Espanyol on Sunday. Madrid was runner-up to Barcelona in the Spanish league last season. Osasuna finished ninth. ___ AP soccer:

Paris FC sign Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt

Promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC have signed Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (35), both clubs have announced. The former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has signed a three-year deal with Paris FC. The Germany international arrived in the French capital on Tuesday to undergo his medical. Trapp is back in Paris after featuring 91 times for PSG during four years, between 2015 and 2019. Paris FC have been looking for an experienced goalkeeper this summer to strengthen their squad following their Ligue 1 promotion. Trapp is expected to provide leadership and competition for Obed Nkambadio, who started between the posts during the club's opening-day 1-0 defeat against Angers SCO. Trapp is expected to make his PFC debut against Marseille on Saturday. GFFN | Bastien Cheval
