Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital: Patients from across Quebec call for rebuild
Patients from across Quebec are calling on Premier François Legault to start rebuilding Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital as soon as possible.
In an open letter obtained by The Canadian Press, the 45 or so signatories appealed to the premier's sense of responsibility, saying they are launching a 'national cry from the heart.'
'As you know, Maisonneuve-Rosemont is not just another hospital,' they state. 'Every year, thousands of Quebecers are treated there: premature babies from the Eastern Townships, cancer patients from the Laurentians, transplant recipients from Abitibi.
'We are these patients, these families, these survivors. (...) We have hoped, we have cried, we have healed within these tired but miracle-bearing walls.'
If Legault postpones renovations on the building, he will go down in history as the man who 'mortgaged the health, not of a neighbourhood, but of a people,' according to the letter.
'You have the power to avert this predicted disaster,' they wrote to the premier.
'If nothing changes, this abandonment will be the reason you deplete in the hearts of Quebecers: not as a builder, but as the person who let down a jewel in the crown of our health care system,' they wrote.
The signatories insist that they are not seeking to 'accuse,' but to point out that they are 'from Mauricie, the Laurentians, Lanaudière, the Eastern Townships and other regions of Quebec.'
They are asking the premier to recognize that rebuilding Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital is not a 'local' request, but a 'national' priority.
The hospital has been in the headlines for months now due to its alarming state of disrepair.
Last Tuesday, high winds caused a major power cut and broken windows.
The Legault government has been promising major renovation work at the hospital for years, but has since reneged on its promise, citing the budget situation and needs elsewhere.
Under pressure, the premier said last week that he would try to find $85 million to start the first phase of the project, namely the construction of a car park.
The subject is likely to come up again during the study of the Minister of Health's budgetary appropriations, which are slated to take place in the presence of Health Minister Christian Dubé on Tuesday in the National Assembly.
The opposition parties and the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital coalition have invited the media to a joint press conference to provide an update on the situation early on Tuesday morning.

$500K in drugs seized in Lethbridge bust; 2 arrested
Lethbridge police seized more than $500,000 worth of drugs from a home in the city's north end on May 28, 2025. (Supplied) A man and a woman from Lethbridge are facing charges after police seized more than $500,000 of cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs. Lethbridge police say the bust was the result of a drug-trafficking investigation involving a home in the 600 block of 10 Street North. On May 28, police executed a search warrant at the property, finding 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, more than 1,600 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets, 46 grams of ketamine, 425 grams of Psilocybin, 16,000 black stock cigarettes, six kilograms of cannabis, 500 cartridges of cannabis extract and $16,000 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of crime. Police also found other drugs, including methamphetamine and cannabis and tobacco products during a secondary search. A man was arrested at the home. At about the same time, police located a vehicle whose driver was 'engaged in activity consistent with drug trafficking' and stopped it in the 1100 block of 19 Street South. The woman driving the vehicle was arrested and searched, with police finding $2,300, believed to be the proceeds of crime. Bradshaw Jerome Balog, 37, and Aspen Michayla Woodman, 26, are both facing multiple drug possession and trafficking offences. The pair were released from custody and are expected to appear in court on June 19.

Interprovincial partnership to help fast-track international doctors' careers in P.E.I.
McMaster University and the Government of Prince Edward Island have announced an interprovincial partnership for a physician fellowship program. (Source: Government of Prince Edward Island) McMaster University and the Government of Prince Edward Island have announced the first-of-its-kind interprovincial partnership. The PEI-McMaster Collaborative Hospitalist Fellowship is a training model designed for international medical graduates. The fellowship trains physicians to specialize in providing direct care to a wide range of patients, from the beginning to end of their stay, a news release from the provincial government said. 'This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration in Canada. Our approach provides an accelerated and practical route for highly trained specialist international physicians to transition into the Canadian health system and begin contributing to patient care quickly,' Haroon Yousuf, hospitalist fellowship director and associate professor in the department of medicine at McMaster University said. Fellows will complete most of their training at McMaster, with one of the 13 training blocks delivered in P.E.I. After completing the program, physicians are required to practice in the province for a minimum of one year. 'By collaborating with McMaster University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, this initiative helps international physicians integrate into the Canadian health system while giving PEI a boost in our workforce,' said Mark McLane, minister of Health and Wellness for Prince Edward Island. 'It's a forward-looking strategy that benefits everyone and shows our commitment to expanding pathways for International Medical Graduates in the province.' The collaboration was inspired in part by the hiring of Ali Abdullah, an internationally trained internal medicine specialist, who completed McMaster's hospitalist fellowship and began his practice in P.E.I. in 2024. 'This collaboration shows what's possible when universities and governments work together to rethink training and recruitment,' Yousuf said. 'Together, we can break down barriers and create new opportunities, across the country and beyond.' Interested candidates can apply on McMaster University's website.
