Five takeaways from Michigan basketball's huge win over Texas A&M to advance to Sweet 16
It wasn't long ago that many thought that it was unlikely that Michigan basketball would do much more than make the NCAA Tournament, let alone make it out of the first round. But after narrowly beating UC San Diego by three points on Thursday, the Wolverines came alive midway through the second half to send Texas A&M back to College Station, while the maize and blue will start planning a trip to Atlanta.
It was a stunning victory for Michigan basketball considering that it was down 10 with 13 minutes left in the game and looked like it had very little left in the tank. However, the maize and blue found offense at the same time that the defense started working, and as a result, they've survived and now advance.
Here are our five takeaways from the game.
Missed opportunities led to perseverance
You can usually count on Michigan basketball to get points in the paint, especially with the two big men, Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf. However, the Wolverines really struggled to hit shots right under the basket for much of the game. It was the Achilles heel given how many looks (and rebounds) the Wolverines were getting, but staying with it, not getting too crazy trying to jack up 3s, and getting to the free throw line midway through the second half helped the maize and blue get back into the game and take a lead for good late.
Rebounding was actually good
One of the big worries coming into the game for Michigan basketball was Texas A&M's rebounding prowess as the Aggies entered as the best team in the country when it came to corralling offensive rebounds. However, the Wolverines were up to the challenge, actually outrebounding A&M on Saturday. Michigan had 48 rebounds to the Aggies' 39, while the Wolverines had one more offensive rebound at 15.
We've seen the football team do things better that their opponents were known for in the Jim Harbaugh, but it's surprising to see it happen with Dusty May and the basketball team at such a critical juncture.
Steady as she goes
There was essentially no point during the first 25 minutes where the Wolverines looked like the better team, if not the first 30 minutes. But Michigan kept plugging away, making stops on defense while continuing to attempt tough shots. It wasn't pretty for the bulk of the game, but all the maize and blue needed was a stretch where the Aggie offense stalled while their own offense started getting things going. A 14-3 run in the last half of the second half allowed the Wolverines to go from being down 10 with 13:17 remaining to up nine with 3:37 remaining. It was somewhat of an opposite look from most games where Michigan takes a big early lead, loses it somewhere in the second half, and then holds on for dear life to win a one-or-two-possession game.
It was a gritty win and the perseverance pulled off.
Roddy Gayle Jr. was the difference
When nothing was working, it was Gayle who came in and got things going. The bulk of his career high of 26 points came in that stretch when A&M couldn't get much of anything going offensively. He hit some clutch 3s, got stops on defense, and made savvy shots from within the arc to help propel the maize and blue back after looking dead in the water.
What a big change from where he was just a few weeks ago.
Who knows where Michigan goes from here?
Now the Wolverines await their next opponent, but Dusty May has led an 8-24 team to the Sweet 16 in his first year. The maize and blue will play the winner of Auburn and Creighton with a chance to play in the Elite Eight. Given that this game was a bit different than the usual script, there's really no telling what this team is capable of. Each game is a one-game season, and Michigan could be ousted next round, or it could go the distance.
There's really no telling with this team. But considering the perseverance and effort, it's pretty stunning that Michigan has advanced to the second weekend.

Iowa baseball star earns Perfect Game All-American honors

Iowa baseball star earns Perfect Game All-American honors After a stellar junior campaign with the Hawkeyes, Iowa baseball ace pitcher Cade Obermueller has been named a Perfect Game third-team All-American. The left-hander is the Hawkeyes' first All-American honoree since Brody Brecht and Keaton Anthony earned it in 2023. The Iowa City, Iowa native earned the third-team All-America distinction after going 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 15 starts. He posted five quality starts and fanned 117 batters over 83.1 innings. His 117 punchouts rank second all-time in program history for strikeouts in a season. The highlight of Obermueller's 2024-25 season was his complete-game performance at Northwestern on March 4. In that game, he recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts while giving up only one hit, one run, and one base-on-balls in a 12-1 Hawkeyes run-rule win. Obermueller's third-team All-American honors add to his growing list of accomplishments from the past season, which now includes a 2025 All-Big Ten Tournament team and an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA All-Midwest Region first-team selection. While Obermueller could be in line for more honors following the conclusion of the 2025 College World Series later this month, a potential return for his senior season with the Hawkeyes could be vital to the program's success as they hope to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023. Michigan football secures 9th commit, beats Notre Dame for Alister Vallejo

While there was a lot of consternation from Michigan football fans about the 2026 recruiting class just a week (or less) ago, that has to be dissipating at this point. The Wolverines managed to secure a big commitment on Monday with Chicago (Ill.) Simeon four-star edge rusher McHale Blade spurning Notre Dame for the maize and blue. Just 24 hours later, the question was: could Michigan upset the Irish yet again with a commitment that was supposed to end up in South Bend? Advertisement On Tuesday morning, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore put out the proverbial bat signal, indicating a commitment was nigh. And one target set to decide on Tuesday evening who appeared Notre Dame-bound might just end up in a winged helmet instead. Alister Vallejo commits to Michigan football Somewhat of a Mason Graham clone, Michigan actually offered 2026 Liberty Hill (Tx.) four-star defensive tackle Alister Vallejo one day before Notre Dame, on April 13. However, he appeared to be a strong Irish lean throughout much of the process. And, given that he has not yet visited Ann Arbor (his official visit is set for June 13), would he pledge to the amzie and blue sight unseen? It appears the answer is yes, as he made the announcement for Michigan over Notre Dame and Kansas on Tuesday night. 247Sports is the sole service that has Vallejo as a four-star, while ESPN is the one recruiting site that has yet to give him a rating altogether. He is the first interior defensive line commit for Michigan this cycle. Michigan has two edge rushers pledged in Tariq Boney and the aforementioned McHale Blade. Scouting report The scouting report via 247Sports' Gabe Brooks: Verifiably big with requisite frame to survive and potentially thrive in the trenches at the high-major level. Checks multi-sport box with encouraging shot put data. Excellent production for an interior D-line projection with 18 sacks, 26 hurries, 5 kick blocks across past two seasons (sophomore-junior). Serious forward juice with impressive linear closing speed relative to mass. Shows promising redirecting ability. Moves around with some role flexibility in a primarily odd front. Big/strong enough to back up traffic, athletic enough to penetrate and make plays on the ball. Can get caught flat-footed. Still room to improve balance and body control i.e. eliminating wasted motion upon disengagement and pursuit initiation. Potentially scheme-versatile iDL with dominant high school tape against solid comp. Projects as a quality high-major D-line piece who could develop into an NFL Draft candidate down the road. Advertisement Vallejo checks in at 6-foot-3, 310 pounds going into his senior year. Junior film The 2026 class Vallejo is the ninth commitment of the 2026 class. He's the 443rd-rated prospect according to the 247Sports Composite and the second pledge from the state of Texas in the class. Using these metrics, here is the class thus far: Newbury Park (Calif.) four-star QB Brady Smigiel (No. 82 overall, 7th QB, 11th in California) Chicago (Ill.) Simeon four-star EDGE McHale Blade (No. 169 overall, 21st EDGE, 5th in Illinois) Billings (Mont.) West four-star TE Matt Ludwig (No. 220 overall, 11th TE, 1st in Montana ) Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin four-star CB Brody Jennings (No. 275 overall, 23rd CB, 42nd in Florida) Cartersville (Ga.) Cass four-star IOL Bear McWhorter (No. 399 overall, 33rd IOL, 48th in Georgia) Liberty Hill (Tx.) three-star DL Alister Vallejo (No. 443 overall, 48th DL, 61st in Texas) Denver (Colo.) Mullen three-star TE Mason Bonner (No. 593 by 247Sports Composite; 30th TE, 5th in Colorado) Dallas (Tx.) Parish Episcopal three-star WR Jaylen Pile (No. 702 overall, 103rd WR, 113th in Texas) Washington (D.C.) St. John's three-star EDGE Tariq Boney (No. 783 overall, 71st EDGE, 4th in D.C.) Florida A&M places Angela Suggs on administrative leave following arrest

The post Florida A&M places Angela Suggs on administrative leave following arrest appeared first on ClutchPoints. Following her arrest, Florida A&M has placed Angela Suggs on administrative leave. Suggs faces charges of grand theft, scheme to defraud, and four misdemeanor counts for submitting false travel voucher claims, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Florida A&M alumna surrendered earlier on Monday and was released on a $13,500 bond shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to court records. Per a statement by interim president Dr. Timothy Beard to HBCU Gameday, Suggs was placed on leave with pay until further notice and deputy directors of athletics Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson will run operations. Sugg's arrest and subsequent investigation and charges stem from her work with the Florida Sports Foundation, in which she served as president of the organization. The Florida Sports Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization that serves as the Sports Industry Development Division for the State of Florida. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released a statement detailing the scope of their investigation. 'The investigation began in November 2024 after FDLE received a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce's Inspector General with an audit of Suggs' business credit card purchases and corresponding travel reimbursements,' the statement read. 'The investigation revealed Suggs misused her FSF-issued credit card to make wire transfers and cash withdraws and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling more than $24,000. The statement continued, 'When asked about the unauthorized charges, Suggs claimed some were for business meals and others were accidentally charged to the business card. She failed to fully repay (the foundation) for her personal expenditures.' In September 2024, Suggs was appointed Athletic Director at Florida A&M University, succeeding Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. A proud Tallahassee native and FAMU alum, Suggs has a longstanding connection to FAMU Athletics. Suggs recently facilitated the hiring of Florida State legend Charlie Ward to become the next basketball coach for the institution.
