Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner tops Carlos Alcaraz in four sets to claim title
In a rematch of June's French Open final — which Alcaraz won after dropping the first two sets — this time it was Sinner who came from behind for the victory. Sinner lost the first set before ultimately winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
'It's so special,' Sinner said after the match during an on-court interview. 'I had a very tough loss in Paris, at the end of the day it doesn't matter how you win or lose, you have to understand what you did wrong. That's what we did.'
Sunday's match was the latest chapter in the rivalry that's come to define the current era of men's tennis. Sinner and Alcaraz had combined to win the previous six majors in the sport prior to Sunday, with each player winning three.
Before Sunday, Alcaraz has had the upper hand between him and Sinner, winning eight of their previous 12 matchups, including a 3-1 record at Grand Slam tournaments and a 3-1 record in finals. Alcaraz had also won Wimbledon in each of the last two years.
Sinner won Sunday thanks in large part to an aggressive style.
He spent more of the match attacking compared to Alcaraz. Sinner's first-serve percentage (62%) was much higher than his opponent (53%), allowing him to keep Alcaraz on his back foot. Sinner also won a higher percentage of second-serve points, 61% to 51%.
'It's difficult to lose,' Alcaraz said after. He later added, 'I will be back for sure.'
It was still a relatively even-fought battle between the two-best players in the sport. Sinner hit 40 winners compared to Alcaraz's 38. And Alcaraz finished the match with 36 unforced errors compared to Sinner's 40.
With Sunday's victory, Sinner has now won every Grand Slam except the French. Before this year, he had never made it further than the semifinals at the All-England Club.
The next major will be the U.S. Open, which begins in late August. Sinner, who won the tournament last year, will have a chance to win his third Grand Slam of the year.
'I'm just living my dream,' Sinner said.

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak continues to face an uncertain future and the Sweden international's next move could hinge on Manchester United's business The future of Liverpool target Alexander Isak could yet be impacted with old rivals Manchester United. While United aren't in for Isak themselves, their transfer battle with Newcastle over Benjamin Sesko could have a knock-on effect on the Swede. Liverpool's initial approach for Isak was knocked back by Newcastle, who want close to £150million for their leading man. They have bid roughly half that for Slovenia international Sesko - £69.5m plus up to £8m in add-ons - but dont have a clear run at the RB Leipzig star. According to The Telegraph, Liverpool have no plans to make a renewed bid for Isak as things stand. However, the same publication indicates things might change if the Magpies sign a new striker. Manchester United have a chance to throw a spanner in the works, then. If they are able to beat Eddie Howe's side to Sesko then, in all likelihood, Isak will be going nowhere. The latest developments come as United and Newcastle both brace for a decision from Sesko - with a deadline potentially coming as soon as Tuesday night. The striker is ready to trade the Bundesliga for the Premier League, but both clubs will feel they have a case. It has been a frustrating summer so far for Newcastle. Anthony Elanga their only senior outfield signing, joining in a £55m move from Nottingham Forest, while goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has joined from Southampton. They have missed out on other targets, though, with French striker Hugo Ekitike opting for Liverpool and Joao Pedro choosing Chelsea. It's not just forwards who have looked elsewhere, either, with centre-back Dean Huijsen moving to Real Madrid and goalkeeper James Trafford deciding to rejoin Manchester City. One man who could yet move to St James' Park is Yoane Wissa. Eddie Howe's side have so far failed to meet Brentford's asking price for the Congolese international, who has now returned to training in West London, but there is still time left in the window. "We're looking for the best players that we can get," Newcastle manager Howe said over the weekend. "Whatever our target position is, we're looking for the best so I see all situations open and available to us. I feel that's the only way that we're going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it's quality over quantity. "It always has been. That's always been the way that we try to work and the way that we try to recruit, and I think we've done it pretty well to this point. Manchester United have decided to reject approaches from five clubs for their defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to reports. Three teams in the Premier League and two from Italy have made offers to sign the England international centre-back ahead of the 2025-26 season. Maguire's current contract is due to expire next summer – and while talks have not yet taken place over an extension – United are keen to keep him. That's according to the Daily Mail, who also report that Maguire has no desire to leave Old Trafford and sees his long-term future at the club. Maguire turns 33 in March but wishes to spend the rest of his career with United and wants to emulate the likes of Denis Irwin and Steve Bruce. 'It's not just Bruno, it's not just Harry, it's six guys now. 'They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with that. 'I said to them in this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. 'You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it's helping the group. 'We have Bruno, we have Licha, we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous. So it's not just the oldest ones. 'Nous is in the group because he's a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group and try to reach every space. 'They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.'
