A421: Work has begun to relocate a flooded pumping station
Work to relocate a pumping station to higher ground is under way after a major road was closed for three weeks when it was submerged by flood water.The A421 was closed at the Marston Moretaine interchange in Bedfordshire in September after a month's worth of rain fell in less than 48 hours.National Highways cleared 72 million litres of water, equivalent to about 30 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and the road fully reopened in October.Simon Amor, from the roads organisation, said the work would help prevent further emergency closures on the road, which connects the A1 and M1, south of Bedford.
"Relocating the pumping station to higher ground and the installation of a new pump will help prevent emergency road closures on the A421, benefitting road users and the local community," said Mr Amor, who is head of scheme delivery."To minimise disruption to road users the works will be carried out on weekday nights, usually between 8pm and 6am."He said "overnight lane and slip road closures will be in place, and drivers are advised to check their route in advance and allow additional time to complete their journeys".He said the work was expected to be completed by the summer, and thanked drivers for their patience and understanding while it was being carried out.As work to relocate the pumping station progresses, details of future closures and diversions will be available on the National Highways website.

Three dead and one seriously injured Three people have died and a fourth is seriously injured after the single-vehicle collision in South Gloucestershire. Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: 'We're sad to report two adults in their 40s and one teenage child who were travelling in the vehicle have died from their injuries. A second child sustained serious injuries and they have been taken to hospital.' Inspector Vicary added: 'Our thoughts first and foremost are with the child in hospital and loved ones who have received the most awful news overnight. A specially-trained officer will provide them with support at this difficult time.' Paramedics worked in 'most tragic of circumstances' Emergency service crews were called to the M5 yesterday evening after a white BMW left the northbound carriageway. They arrived to a "very complex" scene, police said, and worked throughout the night to try and save lives. Inspector Vicary said: 'Emergency services have worked throughout the night at what has proved to be a very complex scene. They have worked diligently and professionally to try to save life in the most tragic of circumstances.' Investigation ongoing at scene Police are currently on scene to carry out a vehicle recovery operation. National Highways warned drivers that delays are building on approach of the closures, with expected delays of at least 60 minutes northbound and 45 minutes southbound. Officers said earlier that vehicle recovery work still needs to be completed and National Highways will need to assess the carriageway and make any necessary repairs before it will be safe to reopen the motorway. Witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage have meanwhile been asked to contact police online or on 101 quoting reference number 5225151145.

Delays after vehicle fire on M54 between Telford and Wellington
Drivers are being warned of delays on the M54 westbound after a vehicle fire. Crews were called to reports of a car fire near junction six (Telford West) at 16:38 BST, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service service confirmed that the fire, which involved a diesel, saloon car, had been extinguished at 17:13 BST, however traffic remained slow. One out of three lanes are closed between junction five (Telford Central) and junction six (Telford West), National Highways said.
