Zverev sets up Stuttgart semi-final with impressive Shelton, Fritz also through
June 13 (Reuters) - Top seed and home favourite Alexander Zverev beat Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open on Friday while Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton also reached the last four.
Zverev is seeking his first grasscourt title and he was involved in a tight opening set which was tied at 5-5 when the German switched gears in the final two games to clinch it.
But Zverev was far more dominant against his American opponent in the second set as he finished the match with 31 winners in a contest that lasted 90 minutes.
"I'm in the semi-finals now and now I really want to focus on trying to do the best I can," Zverev said.
"I know the opponents are going to get tougher but I'm really happy on the court right now I'm really happy in Stuttgart and I'm looking forward to the next two days."
Zverev will play third seed Shelton next after the American, who was virtually unstoppable on his first serve, beat Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4, firing 18 aces.
Shelton was so dominant in the second set that he did not lose a single point on serve while he won 100% of his first-serve points in the match, with victory ensuring he will break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.
Marton Fucsovics had beaten Fritz in straight sets in Stuttgart two years ago but this time the American, who has yet to drop a set at the tournament, came out on top in a dominant 6-3 6-4 victory.
Although Fritz was involved in some long baseline rallies, he relied on his serve, sending 12 aces past the Hungarian to set up a semi-final clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat the 17-year-old German Justin Engel 7-6(3) 6-3.
Engel had claimed his first professional victory on grass earlier this week when he beat James Duckworth, following it up with an upset win over seventh seed Alex Michelsen, but beating Auger-Aliassime proved to be a step too far for the teenager.
"His serve was so incredibly good today that I felt pressure in my own service games," Engel said.
"But it was great fun playing in front of this crowd again. I can't wait to play here again next year."

Yusupov began his professional boxing journey with a stunning 39-second knockout against Benjamin Kunz and maintained an unblemished record in the ring with nine wins – seven by knockout. One of his triumphs includes outboxing Giorgi Kandelaki this January in a six-round contest decided by the judges. One tribute said: "Rest in peace to a true fighter, both in the ring and in life. Nico Rosberg calls out Danica Patrick live on Sky Sports F1 at Canadian GP
The Canadian Grand Prix track sparked debate between Sky Sports F1 colleagues Danica Patrick and Nico Rosberg during the broadcaster's live coverage of the Montreal event Danica Patrick was told she was wrong about the Canadian Grand Prix track by her colleague Nico Rosberg. The German's comment came during the live Sky Sports broadcast from Montreal as former IndyCar and NASCAR driver Patrick spoke about the circuit. And the 2016 F1 champion was quick to make that known as he provided the complete opposite view of a circuit he knows very well from his racing days. Rosberg replied: "I have to disagree ever so slightly there, Danica. Montreal is one of the hardest tracks of the year, because there's so many bumps and at every kerb you have to hit it so perfectly. "It's a real driver's track, which is why Lewis Hamilton has won all his records here and even Max Verstappen has won all the last races, because the driver can really shine here." In response, Patrick admitted that "there is a huge penalty for not being precise and that's hitting the wall." That exchange came after Patrick had made a similar claim a day earlier on the Sky broadcast from Friday's action. While her claim went unchallenged that time, colleague Martin Brundle seemed to briefly double-take at what he had just heard before simply staring into the camera. Patrick has become a regular pundit on Sky's F1 coverage, appearing several times per season as part of the broadcaster's rotating pool of on-screen talent. But her appearances often come with some criticism as she has become a divisive figure because of her political views. She is a public supporter of Donald Trump, having endorsed his successful run for the US Presidency last year. Patrick was also previously in a relationship with NFL superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers having dated for more than two years until they split in summer 2020. And last month she claimed during a podcast appearance that Rodgers had been "emotionally abusive". She said: "The nature of the relationship was emotionally abusive, so that wore me down to nothing... He leaves a trail of blood. I don't think I'm saying too much earth-shattering stuff – there's been enough out there."
