
Sabah can lead in push for ‘slow food'

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has the potential to take the lead in driving Malaysia's slow food movement and sustainable agriculture, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. Speaking at the soft launch of the 'Slow Food' concept held in conjunction with Hari Peladang, Penternak dan Nelayan Kebangsaan (HPPNK) on Friday, he said the 'slow food' idea, although new in terminology to many, is already deeply rooted in Sabah's way of life — particularly in rural communities where food is still grown and consumed locally. 'In Sabah, you go to the rural areas — we still eat rice that was planted by the same village we come from. We eat fish and vegetables that were grown in our own backyards. Less than a 10km radius,' Arthur said at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Arthur explained that the concept promotes more than just healthy eating — it represents a return to nutritional value, local produce, and self-reliant food systems. 'We may understand the perception that fast food, although cheap, often involves processed meals and is less healthy. 'Slow food, on the other hand, champions nutritious, valuable meals sourced locally. If we look at the lifestyle that has long been practised — especially in villages — this concept actually existed since the time of our ancestors. 'However, with industrialisation, urbanisation, and the need to live at a faster pace, we may have sacrificed healthier eating and living habits. This concept fights to restore that. So, as the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, we fully support this agenda,' he said. Arthur raised the organisers, Opulence Exhibition Services and MyFood, for choosing Kota Kinabalu as the launch venue. 'First of all, I'd like to send a huge congratulations to Opulence for their success for having this soft launching which we are witnessing today,' he said. 'We thank Opulence once again for choosing HPPNK as the location for this soft launch, and we look forward to joining you at KLCC in May 2026.' Arthur also reflected on the lessons from the Covid-19 lockdowns, where many urban Malaysians were confined to small flats, unable to access fresh air or food. This sparked a renewed appreciation for rural life and traditional food systems. 'People began to realise it wasn't so bad living in their home after all. If they had stayed, they could still fish, pluck durians, or grow vegetables. That mindset shift is what we now want to support and sustain,' he said. He warned that Malaysia's heavy dependence on food imports — including more than 40 per cent of its rice — is unsustainable. 'During Covid, neighbouring countries stopped exporting rice to us. That was a wake-up call. We cannot continue relying on food imports,' he said. In 2023 alone, Malaysia recorded a RM40 billion agro-food trade deficit, importing RM93 billion worth of food and exporting only RM54 billion. 'Food security is a shared responsibility — and we need everyone, including the private sector, to come together,' he stressed. He added that under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), RM29 million had been allocated to the agency Parma to carry out 'Rantai' — a national programme to improve supply chain efficiency from planting to marketing and export. 'With the right technology and innovation, we can go beyond the 10km radius. Who knows, maybe our friends in Peninsular Malaysia can soon enjoy Sabah's avocados, tarap and more,' he said. My Food 2026, is Malaysia's most prestigious and sustainability driven food and beverage (F&B) exhibition, was officially pre-launched. The launching would take place at on May 7 to 9, 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), concurrently with the International Cafe and Beverage Show 2026 (ICBS 2026). 1,000 set to discuss global irrigation

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the forum serves as a key platform for strategic discussions on the future of the global irrigation sector, which is currently facing multi-dimensional pressures, including water resource constraints. Malaysia will host the conference, which will take place from September 7 to 13, this year, at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. 'Over 100 papers will be presented by representatives from government agencies, research institutions, international organisations, the private sector, and farming communities both from within Malaysia and abroad,' he said during the Pre-Launch Ceremony of WIF4 and the International Executive Council (IEC) Meeting, held in conjunction with the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) here on Saturday. He stated that one of the main events is the High-Level Advisory Group Meeting, which will be attended by key leaders, technical experts, and policymakers from 24 countries to discuss water resilience and the sustainable modernization of irrigation. 'The outcome of the meeting is expected to outline policy recommendations and a global direction to strengthen the irrigation sector in support of global food sustainability,' he said. He stated that WIF4 also serves as an important platform for fostering collaboration between practical experience and scientific research, as well as strengthening international networks. 'I urge policymakers, researchers, engineers, and agri-entrepreneurs to make full use of this forum to accelerate the implementation of high-impact projects and to adopt innovative technologies and practices,' he explained. Mohamad stated that the forum's theme, Is Irrigation a Sunset Industry?, is highly significant as it challenges all stakeholders to reassess the direction of the irrigation sector in the context of the digital era and the climate crisis. He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is actively implementing various initiatives, including the adoption of modern technologies such as precision agriculture, Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart irrigation systems, and sustainable approaches to water resource management. He stated that the theme encourages critical discussions and promotes new innovations to ensure the irrigation sector remains relevant, productive, and sustainable. Indulge in sweet, savoury treats
MUCH like Cheers, the 90's sitcom bar 'where everybody knows your name', diners at a Plaza Damas 3 cafe can expect a warm welcome, with regulars being greeted by name by its friendly chef-owner. At the heart of Real Sweet Treats cafe is Renee Soliano Tan, a chef by training who has over 10 years of baking experience under her belt. Real Sweet Treats cafe in Plaza Damas 3 saw its business improve after introducing a hot menu with savoury options. She started Real Sweet Treats as a side hustle at the age of 16. Baking was also how she survived during the Covid-19 pandemic, as her job was put on hold during that period, explained Tan. At the heart of Real Sweet Treats is Tan, who started the business at the age of 16. — Photos: JAROD LIM/The Star 'I ran a home-based baking business for two years during the pandemic and participated in pop-up bazaars when movement restrictions were eased, before venturing to open my own cafe in April 2023.' Tan said her business' name pays homage to the RST acronym she shares with her four siblings and also reflects her passion for baking, although she admitted that it also gives people the impression that her pastries are 'really sweet'. 'I trained in culinary arts and was given an opportunity to work as a pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur. 'My mentors trained me to craft pastries quickly, while ensuring they looked appealing and tasted nice,' said Tan, adding that she still holds to the 'do it fast, do it nice' motto. The cafe typically offers 20 types of baked goods daily, including at least one type of brownie, tart and banana cake, all of which are Real Sweet Treats' signature items. Blue Nana topped with banana compote, chantilly cream and fresh blueberries is the cafe's signature buttermilk waffle option. The menu, she said, changes weekly, as she crafts the pastries based on what she feels like eating. It can be Earl Grey tea, or a pastry item with seasonal ingredients like South Korean strawberries, she added. 'I make an effort to use good quality ingredients in my pastries, some of which are imported. 'If there are customers who question my price point, I try to educate them on what it takes to craft quality baked goods.' The cafe's daily lineup of pastries offers something for everyone with the RST Banana Cake, Orange Flourless Cake and Maple Pecan Carrot Cake being our personal favourites. Emerald Pesto Pasta features sweet basil, garlic, roasted almonds and beef bacon. Other items spotted included Strawberry Vanilla Tart, Blueberry Lemon Tart, Rainbow Cheesecake, Vanilla Cloud Cake, Raspberry Lemon Meringue, Strawberry Panna Cotta, Blueberry Earl Grey Loaf and tiramisu (alcohol-free). For customers who want an introduction to its pastries, Real Sweet Treats has a monthly tasting box featuring some of its bestsellers and seasonal goodies. One box is priced at RM85 via pre-order and RM90 via walk-in. The first year of running a cafe was challenging, as Tan had to deal with multiple challenges on top of handling payroll, purchasing and social media posts. 'The business improved when I introduced a hot menu with savoury options. Strawberry Vanilla Tart with juicy South Korean strawberries is a signature item. 'About 70% of dine-in customers opt for the hot menu.' 'Thanks to my strict culinary training, I have separate chillers and sinks for my sweet and savoury items to prevent cross contamination.' Tan is assisted by a team that includes cafe partner Bryan Ong, who cooks the hot food. The cafe's bestselling hot meals include Cozy Meal (grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread, served with house-made roasted tomato soup), Orchard Chicken (a blend of Granny Smith apples, citrus-infused mayo and shredded chicken served on sourdough bread), Emerald Pesto Pasta (a dish featuring a blend of flavours and textures with sweet basil, garlic, roasted almonds and beef bacon), and Sausages and Eggs. Silky, smooth Mango Panna Cotta. 'We use three types of cheese in the Cozy Meal – Gouda, American cheddar and mozzarella,' she said. 'It became so popular that we introduced half portions for customers who couldn't manage a full plate. 'The sausages used in our hot meals are Italian herbed chicken sausages provided by a supplier that also sends them to hotels,' said Tan, adding the cafe works with halal-certified suppliers and ingredients. Besides toast, pasta, all-day breakfast and salads, the cafe also offers made-to-order buttermilk waffles, with Blue Nana topped with banana compote, chantilly cream and fresh blueberries as its signature option. Japan ready to compile extra budget to cushion US tariff blow, PM Ishiba says

REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Monday the government is ready to compile an extra budget to cushion the economic blow from U.S. tariffs, a move that would add strain to the country's already worsening finances. After suffering a stinging defeat in last month's upper house election, Ishiba's minority coalition is under pressure to heed opposition parties' demand to boost spending and cut Japan's sales tax. "We will compile one if necessary, taking into account discussions with other parties," Ishiba told parliament when asked by an opposition lawmaker whether the government would compile an extra budget that includes tax cuts. If the government were to compile a stimulus package, an extra budget to fund the spending would be submitted to an extraordinary parliament session likely to be convened in September. Japan's trade deal struck with President Donald Trump last month lowers U.S. tariffs for imports of goods including its mainstay automobiles, easing the pain for the export-reliant economy. But there is no clarity on when U.S. tariffs for automobiles and auto parts will be cut to 15% from the current 25%, clouding the outlook for Japan's fragile recovery. Compiling an extra budget has become a regular practice in Japan as politicians call for increasing spending to support the economy, keeping its fiscal policy loose even as other countries rolled back crisis-mode spending after the COVID-19 pandemic. Ishiba has not commented on the possible size of an extra budget, but some analysts expect it could reach around 10 trillion yen ($67.68 billion), which would require additional debt issuance. The extra budget would come on top of a record 115.5 trillion yen budget for the current fiscal year. Of the total, 24.5% is being spent on financing debt. Such deficit funding costs will likely rise further as the Bank of Japan eyes more interest rate hikes, analysts say. With rising food costs hurting consumption, opposition parties have called for slashing or eliminating Japan's sales tax rate, which is set at 10% except for 8% for food. Ishiba, who is regarded as a fiscal hawk, has been cautious about cutting the sales tax, which funds social welfare costs for a rapidly ageing population. A flurry of big spending packages and ballooning social welfare costs for a rapidly ageing population have left Japan with a debt pile 250% the size of its economy - the highest among major economies.
