Miami Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison will miss the entire 2025 NFL season after undergoing season-ending neck surgery in Chicago. The injury, sustained during a preseason matchup against the Chicago Bears, is a major blow to Miami's backfield depth heading into the regular season.

to reshape Running Back strategy
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mattison was hurt during Sunday's preseason game and immediately taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. What initially appeared to be minor neck and shoulder soreness quickly escalated in severity, leading to emergency surgery later that evening. The procedure effectively rules him out for the remainder of the year.
The news comes as a surprise given Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel's post-game comments.
Speaking to reporters, McDaniel noted that Mattison was 'doing well' and mentioned only experiencing some neck and shoulder soreness, suggesting that further updates would follow in the coming days. Unfortunately for Miami, the follow-up update confirmed the worst-case scenario.
Mattison, who joined the Dolphins to add veteran stability and power running to the offense, was expected to play a key role in short-yardage and red-zone situations.

With Mattison sidelined, the Dolphins will lean heavily on De'Von Achane, whose speed and versatility make him a dangerous weapon in space. Rookie Jaylen Wright and first-year back Ollie Gordon will also see increased opportunities to prove themselves in training camp and preseason action.
In addition, the Dolphins are bringing in veteran Jamaal Williams for a workout, signaling the team's intent to bolster depth with experienced talent.
Williams, known for his physical running style and reliable goal-line production, could be a strong fit to replace Mattison's role.
Dolphins face backfield challenge and offensive balance test without Alexander Mattison
For Miami, the loss of Mattison is not just about depth; it's about maintaining offensive balance. The Dolphins' high-powered passing attack led by Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill thrives when complemented by a consistent ground game. Finding a replacement capable of handling the physical demands of the position will be crucial for sustaining their offensive rhythm.

Silver lining for Indian football amid dark clouds as FC Goa qualify for ACL2

FC Goa striker Javier Siverio (right) and Al-Saeeb's Arshad Said battle for the ball at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Wednesday Margao: It was nervy, at times difficult to watch, and the six added minutes had everyone on the edge of their seats. But in the end, FC Goa survived, quite literally. Given the uncertainty surrounding this season, there were dark clouds over the future of the club. Goa though ensured they have competitive football to look forward to, from Sept to May, as they put it across Al Seeb Club 2-1 to qualify for the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two. Goals from Man-of-the-Match Dejan Drazic (25th) and Javier Siverio (52nd) gave Goa a 2-0 advantage inside the first hour. But the Oman Professional League champions fought their way back with a goal from Nasser Sultan Alrawahi (60th). The AFC Cup winners from 2022 were the dominant side from start to finish and came close to equalising on several occasions, only for the hosts to protect the lead like their lives depended on it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dog Raises 3 Tiger Cubs - Years Later Zookeeper Bursts Into Tears When Tiger Does The Unexpected Undo Goa now join ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the second-tier Asian club competition. It will be the first time two Indian teams will be in the group stage of the 32-team tournament that offers over $16m in prize money with both Indian teams now being assured of $300,000 each. Playing at home, Goa had some advantages. They knew the ground conditions here, weather suited them -- even if it was overcast all through -- and had fans to back them. But with Al Seeb enjoying a large share of the ball and constantly attacking, the home crowd had little to cheer in the opening minutes. There was excitement when Drazic had the ball at his feet. The Serbian winger excelled on the left with his quick movement, and, true to form, gave Goa the lead at a time when nobody expected. It was the 25th minute and Al Seeb were distracted in the opposite half, appealing a handball. The referee saw nothing wrong, a decision that allowed Borja Herrera to do what he does best: play an instinctive long ball forward for his teammate, over the defence. Drazic brilliantly evaded goalkeeper Faraj Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi, and into the back of the net. It was just the start that Goa wanted. Pushed on the back foot, without the ball, and with Al Seeb pressing at every opportunity, the hosts were forced to play a style they were not accustomed to. Against a quality opposition like the champions from Oman, it's not exactly the best strategy and they almost paid a price closer to the end of the first session. Al Seeb's attempt to cross in the 43rd minute brushed Drazic's hand, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Amid protests from Goa players, the decision was overturned, after the referee consulted his assistant. It was a lucky escape. In the second half, the momentum saw Goa extend their lead when Borja's cross off a short corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above the goalkeeper for a poacher's finish. Two goals ahead with half an hour left to be played was never going to be easy for Goa. Al Seeb attacked in numbers; Zahir Sulaiman Al Aghbari, Ali Sulaiman Al-Busaidi and Salaah Al Yahyaei were so methodical with their passing that hardly anyone noticed when they created the chance for Alrawahi to toe home. For the next half an hour, Goa defended, with Sandesh Jhingan and Pol Moreno, at the heart of every action. There were chances to kill the game with Siverio and Brison Fernandes going close from inside the box. But in the end, that hardly mattered. Goa won, and made it to the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two, providing a rare moment of joy to a sport that's riddled here with troubles like never before.

Kyle Dubas backs Auston Matthews amid the Toronto Maple Leafs' playoff backlash

Kyle Dubas (Image Via Twitter) The Toronto Maple Leafs' 2024-25 playoff run ended in an all-too-familiar way, a second-round exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers. Once again, the loss placed Auston Matthews, the captain, under intense scrutiny. Despite tallying 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in 13 playoff games, Matthews appeared to seize the wrong moments that truly mattered. The extended lack of an Eastern Conference Finals appearance for the Leafs only made those criticisms hot again from the fans, reopening discussions about his postseason effectiveness. Kyle Dubas commends Auston Matthews' maturity Speaking on The Cam & Strick Podcast, the former Maple Leafs general manager, who is serving the same post for the Pittsburgh Penguins today, took exception to some of the appraisals. Kyle Dubas joins the show to talk core four, Mike Babcock, Pittsburghs future and more 'You've seen the evolution as a leader and the evolution on the defensive side as well. Of course, everyone knows about the goalscoring, but to see him named captain there, captain of Team USA, he puts a lot into his craft." Dubas remarked, stating that Matthews' development has much more to do with things outside his offensive numbers. He went further to explain that Matthews is not driven by external criticism but rather that 'I don't think any of the stuff that people talk about, the pressure, the market, his pressure is probably internal and trying to be at his absolute best, and you saw different steps that he took throughout his career.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pierce Brosnan's Wife Lost 120 Pounds - This Is Her Now Undo According to Dubas, it has been a brush with growth throughout Matthews' career: 'He took constructive criticism well, especially as he got into his mid-20s, so it's been great to see him continue to evolve, and I hope that he gets back to 100 percent.' A challenging season for Auston Matthews The 2024-25 season parted ways from the usual production-wise for Auston Matthews, with him ending up with 33 goals against a staggering 69 just the year before. Dubas considered this not as a dip in performance but an upward, hard challenge, harder because expectations are higher for him. Chop Robinson injury update: Dolphins star shares 5-word message for fans amid practice scare

Chop Robinson seems to be up and ok. The Miami Dolphins edge rusher was carted off during Wednesday's joint practice with the Detroit Lions. According to the Palm Beach Post, the 22-year-old was attended by defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and fellow edge rusher Jaelan Phillips before the cart arrived. The rookie was hurt when he forced a fumble by Lions running back David Montgomery. Miami Dolphins linebacker Chop Robinson (44) does drills during practice(AP) As fans were concerned about Robinson's injury, the rookie posted a positive update on social media. 'I'm good yall (sic) nothing serious," he said on his Instagram story. The Dolphins have faced several injury scares leading up to the 2025 season. Last year, Bradley Chubb spent all of his time on the sidelines as he recovered from a knee injury sustained in December 2023. Jaelan Phillips endured a difficult stretch of injuries, first tearing his ACL in Week 4, then suffering a torn Achilles just two months later. Star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are also among the players who were sidelined because of injuries. The two missed the first preseason game, and their status for Week 2 remains unclear. Dolphins placed Alexander Mattison on injured reserve on Monday after the running back suffered a season-ending neck injury vs the Chicago Bears. The veteran left Sunday's game with a neck injury after being tackled on a 21-yard pass play and landing awkwardly on his head in the fourth quarter. Coach Mike McDaniel said afterward that Mattison had some soreness in his neck and shoulder. First-round pick Chop Robinson, taken 21st overall in last year's NFL Draft, had a quiet start to his rookie campaign but finished with a flourish. The Penn State edge rusher notched six sacks over Miami's final 10 games, earning enough attention to place fifth in the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
