Jacob Preston's lawyer hits out as Bulldogs NRL star receives four-match ban

Jacob Preston's lawyer has implored the NRL to launch a crackdown on diving after the Canterbury forward's State of Origin hopes were dashed at the league's judiciary.
A dejected Preston was on Tuesday night found guilty of a crusher tackle on Gold Coast's Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and handed a four-match ban in a blow to the ladder-leading Bulldogs.
Preston's disappointment was doubled by the fact he could have received a fine if not for two previous offences this year.
Instead, he will be sidelined for a month.
The NSW hopeful will miss matches against Canberra, the Sydney Roosters, the Dolphins and Parramatta, and not play again before teams are picked for State of Origin II.
But in a stunning post-hearing statement, Preston's lawyer Paul McGirr claimed diving was widespread in the game as players attempted to earn penalties from crusher tackles.
"I'm not suggesting this with Tino, but some players certainly appear to be lying down a bit in order to milk a penalty," McGirr said.
"Particularly when players go down and behave like their heads [are] almost falling off, and then they're running it up two or three times in the next [set of] six."

McGirr's comments come after the record spate of sin-bins for foul play a fortnight ago, before a significant reduction at Magic Round.
Taking part in his first NRL hearing, McGirr said his stance came out of a fear the league would go down the same path as rugby union with stop-start play.
"The general punter in the pub is sick of it," McGirr said.
"After the game even sometimes you can see opposition players smiling at each other and laughing about it.
"In this instance, the referee never even called anything out."

Stefano Utoikamanu and Trent Loiero are not cited by the NRL's match review committee after giving away penalties that cost Melbourne victory against Canberra.
Inside the hour-long hearing, Preston claimed Canterbury had prepared for Fa'asuamaleaui to turn his back into tackles.
And while McGirr suggested that left Fa'asuamaleaui vulnerable to injury, Preston said the Bulldogs had discussed how to tackle him safely.
McGirr then showed the panel at least 12 separate runs from Fa'asuamaleaui in Sunday's match at Lang Park, where he turned his back into tackles during the Titans' loss.
"Generally he will run the ball up and hit and spin and look to offload or gain post-contact metres while threatening to offload," Preston said.
"We practise ways that are safe. We always prioritise the duty of care of players."
The judiciary panel of Tony Puletua and Paul Simpkins took less than 15 minutes to reach its decision to suspend Preston.

More than 250kg of cocaine found in Brisbane shipping container as police foil $82 million drug plot

Australian police have seized more than 250 kilograms of cocaine worth more than $80 million from a single shipping container in Brisbane. With an estimated street value of about $82 million, the illicit packages were discovered during a cargo screening operation late last month. The bust was a joint operation between Australian Border Force (ABF) and Australian Federal Police (AFP). "To those criminal syndicates who mistakenly believe they can infiltrate our borders with illicit drugs, let this serve as a powerful warning," ABF Commander Troy Sokoloff said. "The ABF, in close collaboration with the AFP, have eyes and ears everywhere." Border force officers conducted an X-ray on the container's cargo after receiving a tip-off about its contents. The container was transporting bags of packing plastic, but among its contents were five carry bags that tested positive for cocaine. Further forensic testing by the AFP later confirmed the bags contained 253kg of cocaine. "I want to commend the highly skilled officers in our supply chain and cargo teams who were vital to the interdiction of this dangerous consignment, thereby preventing significant community harm," Commander Sokoloff said. A federal police investigation into the origin of the illicit drugs is ongoing. "There are people who will have information that can assist this investigation and we urge them to come forward," AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Adrian Telfer said.

Woman sexually abused daughter to satisfy husband, Perth court told

WARNING: This story contains graphic and distressing content. A woman has gone on trial in Perth for allegedly sexually abusing her daughter in a case her own lawyer has described as "confronting" and "disturbing". The mother, who is now 41, allegedly engaged in sexual acts with her prepubescent daughter along with her husband, who had expressed an interest in incest at an early stage in their relationship. Prosecutor Sean Stocks said the girl, who is now a teenager, was a "sexual plaything" for the mother and her husband, with abuse occurring several times a week after they arrived in Australia. The District Court heard the mother, who lived in another country with her eight-year-old daughter, started communicating with the Perth man online in 2016. Prosecutor Sean Stocks said the mother took photos of her child engaged in sexual acts, and used live-streaming "to satisfy his sexual fantasies". As the complainant grew up, the court heard, the man asked his partner: "What do you think about me liking our daughter the way I do?" "I like that I'm different," he allegedly told her. "I love child incest and child sex". Around this time the mother accepted the man's marriage proposal and she and her daughter moved to Perth. The prosecutor said sexual acts involving the girl started when the man visited the pair in their home country, and continued in Perth. "Two to three times a week for three years," Mr Stocks told the court, with the man eventually using a condom to guard against pregnancy. The mother recorded some of these events, the court heard. The stepfather would tell the girl "how brave she was" when they had sex, the court heard. But the girl had started telling him she was unwell or had homework, in order to avoid being abused. Mr Stocks said she would also try to eat her dinner as slowly as she could, knowing what was to happen after. Police arrested the man in 2021 over an unrelated matter and seized electronic devices, at which point they found an explicit handwritten note from the daughter. The court was told the mother and her daughter moved away from the man, to another suburb in Perth, but the woman still sent intimate photos of the teenager to him. She told police she had sent the photos because he threatened to cancel her visa and send her back to her home country. He also suggested he would commit suicide if she did not comply. "The content of this trial is disturbing and confronting," the woman's lawyer Simon Freitag told the court, describing the stepfather's offending as "evil and persistent". However, he said his client did not accept she had "physically offended" against the girl. He said it would be up to the judge to determine if she was a "willing and conscious party" to the offending. The woman has pleaded not guilty to possessing child exploitation material, producing child exploitation material, sexual penetration of a child under 13 and persistently engaging in sexual conduct with a child under 16. The trial is continuing.

F1 Australian Grand Prix confirmed as first race of the 2026 championship

Formula 1's new era will begin in Melbourne after the Australian Grand Prix was confirmed as the first race of the 2026 season. F1 will go through a massive change in 2026, with the introduction of Cadillac as the 11th team on the grid, as well as an overhaul of the sport's technical regulations. Audi will also make their debut in F1, taking over Sauber at the end of 2025. The 2026 Australian Grand Prix weekend will be held at Albert Park from Thursday, March 5 to Sunday, March 8. Melbourne's Albert Park circuit hosted the opening round of the 2025 season, with the estimated weekend attendance of 465,498 becoming a new record at the venue. "The Formula 1 calendar announcement is always an exciting moment, and in the coming weeks we will be sharing on-sale dates for tickets to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026, which we know will be eagerly anticipated," Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Travis Auld said. "There is something special about being the first race of the season, and we're looking forward to sharing that with hundreds of thousands of fans once again in 2026." F1 released the full 24 weekend calendar on Tuesday, with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to be the season finale on December 6. Madrid is the newest addition to the circuit list, with Italy's famed Imola circuit, home of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, falling off the calendar. F1 has had 10 teams on the grid since the 2013 season. The introduction of Cadillac and Audi as teams highlights the popularity F1 has enjoyed over the past decade. American auto giant Ford will also rejoin F1 for the first time since 2004, partnering with Red Bull on their powertrains. McLaren driver Lando Norris won this year's Australian Grand Prix, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver George Russell. Hometown hope Oscar Piastri, who leads the F1 championship heading into this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, spun late and finished ninth in Melbourne.
