Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and the battle to be ‘the world's most beautiful woman'

Telegraph4 hours ago
The great Italian film star Sophia Loren is, of course, famous for the work that she has done on screen over the past seven decades. But she is equally well known for the adoration that she inspired in many of her co-stars. Omar Sharif sighed that he fantasised about her naked after they acted together. Clark Gable confessed that he had had 'the wrong thoughts' about the beauteous Loren when they appeared in the otherwise forgotten 1960 drama It Started In Naples.
Cary Grant, meanwhile, was cast opposite her in the 1957 epic The Pride and the Passion and was initially horrified at the idea, declaring 'My God! You want me to play with this Sophie somebody, a cheesecake thing? Well, I can't and I won't.'
He was soon converted when he met Loren in the flesh, and the two embarked on a love affair: this was considerably more than Peter Sellers managed, when he starred with Loren in the now-problematic 1960 romantic comedy The Millionairess. Sellers decided that he and the Italian actress were destined to be together, and although Loren did not return his affections, he declared to his wife Ann Howe and his children that he was leaving them for his co-star. When his young daughter Sarah asked her father if he still loved his family, he replied: 'Of course I do, darling, just not as much as Sophia Loren.'
Beginnings of a feud
Loren, a diva beyond compare and perhaps the last woman standing from the Golden Age of Hollywood, now has a new season of films devoted to her at the BFI. But it's easy to forget that Loren hasn't always been universally loved – at least, not by her fellow doyens of Italian cinema.
When Cary Grant first met Loren, he was not above poking some fun at her, and the joke that he chose to express himself with may have touched a nerve. In Loren's 2015 memoir Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: My Life, she recalled Grant introducing himself: 'He held out his hand, looking at me with a pinch of mischief: 'Miss Lolloloren, I presume? Or is it Miss Lorenigida? You Italians have such strange last names I can't seem to get them straight.''
It was a clear verbal reference to the other leading star of Italian cinema of the day, in the equally beauteous form of Gina Lollobrigida, who was seven years older than Loren and who had begun her career in Italian and international film just a few years beforehand.
Both vied for the title of 'the world's most beautiful woman', a description that each of them received, at one time or another, and zealously guarded for as long as they might.
A feud had started between the two that would duly become infamous, although both participants alternately claimed that it was simply a PR-confected fantasy or, more amusingly, that it was the other who was continuing it in order to maintain their presence in the headlines.
In one of the relatively few pictures that exist of both actresses together in 1954, the body language makes it clear that they are not relishing sitting next to one another, and Lollobrigida, in particular, has an expression that suggests that she would really rather be elsewhere at that moment.
The photograph was taken at the Italian Film Festival in London, in the presence of Elizabeth II; Loren attracted most of the media attention due to her ornate outfit, which included a fittingly regal cape and crown.
'The most beloved Italian export since spaghetti'
The two women both enjoyed significant success early in their careers, but there were disparities between their levels of recognition and acclaim. Lollobrigida was signed up by the mogul Howard Hughes (who, was, predictably, smitten by her) to a seven-year exclusive contract, but her ventures into English-language cinema were comparatively limited, compared to her standing in Italy.
She appeared in such pictures as John Huston's Beat the Devil, and starred opposite a decrepit Errol Flynn in his attempt to revitalise his swashbuckling career, Crossed Swords. More significant roles in films included the circus drama Trapeze and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
However, she won the greatest amount of acclaim and recognition for Italian-language projects, and received a Bafta nomination for her role in 1953's Bread, Love and Dreams. Further awards followed throughout the decade, and Lollobrigida revelled in her standing as the best-known, most beloved Italian export since spaghetti.
Picking a fight with the queen herself
This did not sit well with the ambitious Loren, who had been born Sofia Scicolone, and had had an early career as a successful model. When she was 15, she met Carlo Ponti, who was judging a beauty pageant that she appeared in. Although the 37-year-old Ponti was no Adonis, he was sufficiently charismatic and intelligent to realise that the young Scicolone had the potential to go far in the film industry, if he could shape her, Svengali-like. He changed her name to the more pronounceable Sophia Loren, encouraged her to learn English and to shed her strong Neapolitan accent.
Still, whatever the truth of her lineage, under Ponti's tutelage she established herself as a comely figure with strong sex appeal. She had made over 25 films by the age of 21, which made her a ubiquitous presence in Italian cinema. Perhaps egged on by Ponti, she now decided to pick a fight with the queen herself, Lollobrigida, and told the European press that she was better endowed – 'bustier' – than the older actress
Lollobrigida duly snapped back that she was capable of playing a peasant, but that Loren was not able to convincingly embody an aristocrat. 'We are as different as a fine racehorse and a goat!' she complained to one reporter.
The barbs must have stung, because, later in her career, Loren suddenly remembered that her father, an unsuccessful railway engineer, had been descended from nobility, which supposedly gave her the right to call herself 'Viscountess of Pozzuoli, Lady of Caserta'.
From personal to professional
The feud soon stretched from the personal to the professional, when Loren replaced Lollobrigida in a sequel to her hit 1953 romantic comedy Bread, Love and Dreams (the older actress had asked for more money). In recognition of Loren's charms, it was filmed in colour rather than black and white.
Matters worsened when Loren had a more significant international breakthrough than Lollobrigida in 1960 by winning both an Oscar and Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for what may well be her greatest performance in Two Women.
The film, a gritty and decidedly unglamorous war drama, directed by Vittorio De Sica, featured Loren as a widow who is struggling to care for her 12-year-old daughter. It climaxes with the two of them being raped by a group of soldiers inside a church, and Loren's bold rejection of the sexuality that she had embodied since she began her career made for stunning viewing. 'I thought it was worth taking the risk at 25 to play an older woman because the story was so beautiful,' she later said.
Lollobrigida did not make any public comment on Loren's awards at the time, but it was perhaps no coincidence that she lobbied for the role of Napoleon Bonaparte's sister Pauline in the 1962 biopic Imperial Venus, presumably in the hope of attracting similar attention.
She won two major Italian awards, the Nastro d'Argento and the David di Donatello, but Oscars and Cannes gongs were not to be hers. Loren, meanwhile, enjoyed an elevated status as a Hollywood film star, appearing in leading roles in such epics as El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire and the Hitchcockian comedy-thriller Arabesque.
Such was her standing that, when she was cast opposite Marlon Brando in the 1967 Charlie Chaplin-directed flop A Countess from Hong Kong, she was able to put the Method star in his place.
As she recounted: 'One day … he suddenly reached out and grabbed at me. I twisted around and very calmly hissed in his face, like a cat when you pet its fur backward: 'Don't you dare. Don't you ever do that again.' As I gave him my dirtiest look, I suddenly saw how small and harmless he really was, almost a victim of an aura that had been created around him.' Disparagingly, she called Brando 'a man ill at ease in the world.'
'She hasn't stopped for 50 years'
Loren went on to have a rollercoaster career that even encompassed a brief prison sentence in the early 1980s for tax evasion: she was treated, appropriately enough, by royalty by her fellow prisoners and the guards alike, and the incident did not damage her significant popularity. In their later years, Loren and Lollobrigida were pictured in the same place together exactly once: at a 1988 event honouring Michael Jackson in Los Angeles.
Yet Lollobrigida continued to brood, and, in 2015, gave an interview to Vanity Fair in which she attempted to suggest that she was truly first amongst equals. 'My God! She and her press agents started this 'rivalry' with me – and she hasn't stopped for 50 years,' Lollobrigida declared.
'It was really boring for me … we are different. We made completely different careers. I wanted to be an artist more than anything else. I wanted a career on a high level.'
Belying, perhaps, the idea that Loren was obsessed by publicity, the younger actress declined to comment. So it was not entirely surprising that, two years later, Lollobrigida was still keeping the feud going.
She told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that 'I was not looking for any rivalry against anyone: I was the number one' and, in an obvious dig at Loren and Ponti, announced that 'I succeeded only thanks to myself, without any producer supporting me. I did everything alone.'
However, when Lollobrigida died in 2023, Loren was able to have the last word, announcing that she was 'deeply shaken and saddened' by the death of her one-time rival, and thereby exhibiting a magnanimity at the conclusion of the feud that was sorely lacking – on both sides – while it continued.

ITV confirms air date of Jodie Whittaker drama – a year after it was dropped

ITV has finally confirmed the air date for Jodie Whittaker's new drama — a year after it was mysteriously dropped from schedules. The former Doctor Who star will front the long-awaited series, which is now set to hit screens later this month. 5 One Night follows Jodie Whittaker alongside Yael Stone and Nicole da Silva as three friends bound by a dark secret that resurfaces years later, threatening to tear their lives apart. The gritty drama promises twists, tension, and powerhouse performances from its all-star cast. A month after Aussie drama One Night dropped in the UK last November, it vanished from Paramount+ without warning — just three months after landing on the platform. At the time, bosses blamed a shift towards ' Hollywood -style' content with mass appeal, alongside cost-cutting moves. Now ITV has swooped in to bring the series back, giving fans the chance to watch — or discover it for the first time. The full drama will stream from Saturday, August 16, with the first episode also airing on ITV1 that night. One Night marked Jodie's first TV role since making history as Doctor Who's first female Time Lord. The 41-year-old star said she was drawn to the project because it tackled a story about sexual assault in a way she found 'completely unique' — offering a fresh and powerful perspective on a difficult subject. She told the Metro: "'What made this completely unique to me and completely engrossing was the change of POV. "Very often it's told from outside in – there's an investigation, there's detectives, there's people working things out. Jodie Whittaker speaks out on Doctor Who future "This is about the decimation something like that can have. "It's also about how the event – whether it happened a minute ago or 20 years ago – is defining for a group of women that it affects, particularly this friendship group. "But also what it's about is how we all survive something like that and who owns memory, who has the right to tell stories, and especially if that story is true." The Sun revealed in April how Doctor Who could be facing the axe - with lead Ncuti Gatwa poised to quit and crew claiming to be laid off. Jodie - who played the Thirteenth Doctor - spoke out about the show's future. During an interview with Off Air with Jane and Fi, Jodie was asked whether the programme could "come back bigger and brighter." She replied: "Every time there's a Doctor Who, I think there's some comment. "I don't necessarily read anything to do with it now, but I watch it and I'm a huge fan of Ncuti [Gatwa]. "There is nothing more loyal and more beautiful than the Whovian community." Jodie added: "So I don't think necessarily its fandom's reducing any way. "So on a grown up basis of statistics, I've no idea, I'm completely unqualified." The Sun previously told how show bosses have postponed any decision until Ncuti's second season has aired later this year. His first series, which began last May, attracted between 2.25million and 3.18million viewers. The actor is already believed to have filmed his regeneration exit scene — and crew fear the BBC will shelve the show after 62 years. Meanwhile, Jodie has also teamed up with Suranne Jones for a thrilling new heist drama called Frauds. The two queens of the small screen star as duo Bert and Sam, whose intertwined past resurfaces in the setting of Southern Spain after a decade of separation. Bert, played by Suranne, is fresh from a spell in a Spanish prison but hellbent on one final, multi-million-pound art heist so calls on old pal Sam (Whittaker). The six-parter, which will air later this year on ITV, was filmed in Spain in January and also stars Karan Gill, Christian Cooke and Talisa Garcia. One Night is streaming on ITVX from Saturday August 16 and will air that night at 9.30pm on ITV1. 5 5 5

UK toy sales rise as adults turn to Pokémon and Lego

UK toy sales have bounced back as adults increasingly muscle in on the market, snapping up everything from Pokémon trading cards and Lego sets to collectibles and action figures based on movie and TV franchises. After falling almost 4% in 2024, UK toy sales have risen 8% so far this year, in line with the 'strong rebound' enjoyed by the global market, data shows. While the fortunes of the UK toy industry have for some time been linked to a growing army of 'kidults' (buyers aged 12 and over), it is over-18s who appear to have driven the increase in sales in the first half of 2025, data from the market research company Circana suggests. The firm said that in the UK the fastest growth was in games and puzzles, including Pokémon cards. These are enjoying a fresh wave of popularity among nostalgic adults, helped by social media influencers brandishing their rare finds. Building sets from companies such as of Lego were also flying off the shelves, as were action figures and collectibles. Some of this is being fuelled by strong demand for figures and other merchandise based on anime and manga series, while the recent blockbuster films The Fantastic Four: First Steps and F1 the Movie, starring Brad Pitt, are likely to have boosted the appetite for items based on the Marvel and Formula One franchises. Looking at the 12 months to March this year, and at five European countries – the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – adults aged 18 and over accounted for almost a fifth (18%) of toy sales, totalling $2.7bn (£2bn), which was up 10% on the previous 12 months. Commenting on the global data, Frédérique Tutt, a toys industry adviser at Circana, said: 'The surge in sales can largely be attributed to consumers aged over 12 years old, who have shown unprecedented growth and are consistently outperforming traditional kids' trends. 'Products such as building sets, trading cards, games, plush toys and collectibles are seeing increased demand from both teens and adults.' Entertainment licenses typically linked to movies and TV shows are playing a key role in the market's growth. Tutt said Pokémon – which began as a pair of video games in the mid-1990s – 'remains the top property for the fourth consecutive year', with sales doubling compared with last year. Katie Price accused of ‘trying to steal the limelight from daughter Princess' after rift between pair is revealed

KATIE Price has been accused of 'trying to steal the limelight from her daughter Princess' after their rift was recently revealed. The mum and daughter duo, who are often hailed "twins" due to their lookalike appearance, are battling through a tricky patch in their relationship, as exclusively revealed by The Sun. 6 6 6 Princess was invited to Ibiza to make her debut on the catwalk and the moment was captured on her new ITV series, The Princess Diaries. Katie sensationally revealed last month that she was banned from attending the event to watch Princess's success, despite holidaying on the Spanish island at the same time. Now, mum-of-five Katie has been accused of 'trying to steal Princess' limelight.' A source said: 'On the face of it, Katie seems to be doing everything she can to take the attention away from her daughter now.' They continued to tell the Mail: 'Katie has had no part in her daughter's career - and never will. 'This should be a really exciting time for Princess but over the last couple of months her mum has been doing everything she can to take the limelight away from her. 'Princess was booked to make her catwalk debut at the opening of the Ibiza Fashion Festival back in June, and what did Katie do? She flew out to Ibiza and made sure everyone knew she was there with daily stories and pictures with the likes of Wayne Lineker and Dean Gaffney. It's embarrassing. 'What mother wouldn't want to let their child have their time in the spotlight? Princess has become a success despite who her mum is. She is not like Katie and will never do a show like Love Island because that's not who she is.' They went on: 'These latest comments are going to really upset Princess. She loves her mum but her behaviour is showing her that she doesn't have her best interests at heart. Katie Price broke down in tears after being banned from seeing daughter Princess on Ibiza holiday 'Katie craves fame and attention and will use anything she can to make headlines even if it's at the detriment of her young daughter. It's sad.' Katie, 47, said she "feels like Brooklyn Beckham" - who is in the midst of a feud with his high-profile family - after being "isolated" by the teen, who has penned a host of influencer deals and bagged her own TV show. And scenes for the 18-year-old's new TV show have been released and show the teen joining 24 other models on the bikini catwalk in the White Isle. She opts for a turquoise dress with bra top detail and a flowing skirt after a last minute outfit change which left her feeling anxious. Katie Price's TV Shows Katie is no stranger to TV and has starred in countless shows over the years. Here, we look back at the ones she has fronted. 2002: Katie Price launched her TV career with a documentary called Jordan: The Truth About Me. 2004: Katie's show, directed by film maker Richard Macer, was followed up with Jordan: The Model Mum and Jordan: You Don't Even Know Me. In the same year, she appeared in Jordan Gets Even. In this show, she underwent a dramatic transformation with special effects to try and fool her family. 2004: When Jordan Met Peter. Katie appeared in the first of many series' with Peter Andre following their whirlwind romance in I'm A Celebrity Get Met Out Of Here. 2005: Jordan & Peter: Laid Bare, Jordan & Peter: Marriage and Mayhem. 2007: Katie & Peter: The Next Chapter, Katie & Peter: The Baby Diaries, Katie & Peter: Unleashed. 2008: Katie & Peter: Down Under, Katie & Peter: African Adventures. 2009: Katie & Peter: Stateside. 2009- 2011: What Katie Did Next .This was Katie's own series following her break-up and divorce with Peter. 2021: Katie Price: Harvey and Me. Katie fronted the first of two BBC documentaries with her disabled son Harvey. 2022: Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next. 2022- 2023: Katie Price's Mucky Mansion. Katie attempted to renovated her 'Muck Mansion' in Sussex for Channel 4. 2025: Katie Price: Making Babies. This followed Katie and Carl Woods' failed attempt at conceiving via IVF. She told the camera: "There's a lot of models here I don't really fit in. "I feel really anxious, I can feel my face getting red." After being asked to lead the array of models, Princess' debut was hugely successful. But the source continues to add that Katie is only focused on 'keeping herself in the limelight.' They added: 'The show is about Princess's career as an influencer and her home life with dad Peter, step-mum Emily and brother Junior, which Katie is not involved in. 'Everyone is very protective of Princess. Big brother Junior has always looked out for her and knew she'd be the one to get all the attention when she got older. He filmed with her in Ibiza and while he see his mum, the first thing Katie did was post it all over her Instagram. 'Nothing is private with Katie, it's all about keeping herself in the limelight. 'And now she's kicking off and doing everything she can to overshadow what should be a really lovely time for Princess.' KATIE'S SNUB ITV2 bosses reportedly told how Katie could not be a part of the series. A source told The Sun of the family turmoil and said: "Katie feels isolated and disregarded. "She loves Princess so much and is supremely proud of the young woman she is becoming. "Princess told her mum that she needed to distance herself publicly and yet chats to her all the time behind closed doors. "She feels a bit like Brooklyn Beckham, with no one in the Andre family really speaking to her." Katie and Peter started their relationship in 2004 after getting together on I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here!. They had Junior and Princess during their four-year marriage. But their relationship fell apart in 2009 and they divorced. SHOW SNUB Princess is said to be hoping to show fans a different side to her with her brand new fly-on-the-wall series. Despite Katie not getting a look-in, the programme will feature her dad and his wife Emily, according to MailOnline. A source said: "Katie will not be in Princess's show, the decision has been made and it's final. "Princess loves her mum, and they have a great relationship, but the show is all about her work and home life. "Television bosses were adamant that nothing was to be 'staged' to include Katie as it would not be a real and truthful insight into her life." STRAINED RELATIONSHIP It comes after Princess admitted this month she "wishes she had a happier childhood." The TikTok star also addressed the "dark times" while she was growing up. While Princess was too young to really remember her parents together, she has traumatic memories of the breakdown of Katie's third marriage to Kieran Hayler. In her new ITV2 series - The Princess Diaries - the teen opens up about her younger years and admits: "I did have a counsellor, I do still see her every now and then. "But I don't feel like I can really talk, so I just write everything down in my notes." 6 6 6
