Christian Horner successor is sailing Red Bull F1 into more choppy waters

Daily Mirror3 days ago
The good ship Red Bull has a new captain at the helm – but it's still sailing the same choppy waters. Making long-serving skipper Christian Horner walk the plank as they did last week unburdens the team of the baggage that came with his presence.
Always happy to play the pantomime villain, Horner was a divisive figure long before last year's scandal that rocked Formula 1. Even though he denied and was cleared of accusations of inappropriate behaviour towards a female colleague, it was a PR disaster for both Horner and the company.
Performance and the unwavering support of Red Bull's Thai majority owner Chalerm Yoovidhya helped to protect him, even from waves of attacks coming from the firm's Austrian CEOs and Max Verstappen's dad Jos. But now Red Bull are struggling, and Jos continues to spread rumours that his son is off to Mercedes, Horner has paid the price.
He is succeeded by Laurent Mekies, the Frenchman who has been promoted from sister team Racing Bulls. There is a certain irony in that, given Horner brought the former Toro Rosso engineer back into the Red Bull family in 2023.
Horner was put in charge of steering the struggling sister outfit back on course and hired Mekies as team principal from Ferrari, alongside new CEO Peter Bayer. Now, two years later, the 48-year-old finds himself in one of the top jobs in world motorsport. But it will not be an easy one for Mekies who will need to find his sea legs swiftly.
And his first job will be to stop Verstappen defecting to sworn enemies Mercedes. The four-time F1 champion won't be making it five in a row this year with McLaren dominating and he won't want to spend much more time out of contention.
Red Bull are making their own engines for the first time next year while Mercedes are veterans on that front and are hotly tipped to start the new F1 era next year strongly. Mekies needs to figure out quickly whether Verstappen truly intends to jump overboard, or whether all the speculation was just his dad making waves.
Even if the Dutchman stays for 2026, he'll soon be looking elsewhere if that new engine isn't performing. Verstappen would love to complete his whole career with Red Bull, but not enough to stay on board a sinking ship. And Yuki Tsunoda's struggles show that, if they were to lose their star man, things could get really ugly at Red Bull.
It's too late for the team to change course on their engine plans, and it may already be too late to ensure Verstappen will stay for the whole voyage. One thing that is for sure is that it won't be smooth sailing for Red Bull's new skipper.
While predecessor Horner loved the spotlight, it is something Mekies, 48, will have to get used to. The Frenchman is a much different character, quiet and unassuming, an engineer at heart, and admitted last year being an F1 team principal was never his "dream".
He has not the same level of ambition as Horner, which ended up being the Brit's downfall in part as his huge influence and Red Bull Racing's autonomy under his leadership annoyed the company leadership in Austria, including co-owner Mark Mateschitz and the head of Red Bull's sporting projects, former RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
What will work in Loughborough University graduate Mekies' favour, as could the fact he already has a long-standing relationship with Jos Verstappen having worked with the Dutchman when he was a driver for minnows Arrows in 2001.
One thing for sure is that he has never experienced the level of interest he will receive when he turns up trackside for his first race as Red Bull leader at the Belgian Grand Prix later this month.

Liverpool fans think they know what Virgil van Dijk said to Alexander Isak amid £125m chase

Liverpool are on the hunt for a new forward to ensure they keep hold of their Premier League title and Newcastle's Alexander Isak has been identified as their primary transfer target Liverpool fans will remember how captain Virgil van Dijk exchanged words with Alexander Isak after their Carabao Cup final defeat to the Magpies back in March - as the Reds continue to chase the £125m striker. ‌ Arne Slot 's side are ramping up their bid to sign a new striker this summer after already splashing out more than £170million on a raft of new signings. ‌ That included smashing their transfer record to secure the £116.5m addition of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen - and they might have to do so again if they want to bring Isak to Anfield. ‌ The Sweden international has emerged as Liverpool's next priority transfer target but a deal looks difficult to complete, with Newcastle extremely reluctant to lose their prized striker. It is understood the Reds could have to spend around £125m just to get the Magpies to consider a bid, with Slot keen to bring in a top forward to complement his already impressive attacking options. Liverpool came up against Isak in their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final four months ago. ‌ The 25-year-old found the back of the net as he netted Newcastle's second goal at Wembley and was seen speaking to Van Dijk after the game. The Dutchman had been filmed whispering in the striker's ear and that led to wild speculation on social media among Liverpool fans. ‌ Some had theorised that Van Dijk had told him "see you in the summer" or "see you in pre-season". Another added: "That was definitely Alex saying to Virg 'see you next season'. I'm so happy I could cry." "Virg telling Isak he's Liverpool's number 9 next season," read a further post from a Liverpool fan on Twitter. ‌ If Liverpool can't get a deal for Isak over the line, they could switch their attentions to Hugo Ekitike after reportedly approaching his club Eintracht Frankfurt over a move. Newcastle are have had a £70m bid rejected by Frankfurt, who are said to be holding out for around £85m.

Mercedes reveals its new electric estate

The stars are out for the launch of the new all-electric Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake – hundreds of them in fact. For the three-pointed star that is the emblem of the German premium car company features extensively throughout the interior and exterior of its first battery-powered estate car – from the stellar panoramic glass starlight roof to the front grille and lights. It makes the new zero-emissions Shooting Brake, with a claimed range of up to 472 miles on a full charge and the ability to add 192 miles on a ten-minute charge, something of a shooting star. This is the second generation CLA Shooting Brake following the first launched in 2015 and officially goes on sale next spring. The new CLA Shooting Brake is the estate version of the recently unveiled CLA Saloon with its sporty shark-nosed design – but all the real action is in the back and in the roof as it remains identical up the B-pillar. The long low-slung electric Shooting Brake combines the sporty proportions of a four-door coupe with more load-lugging cargo space with a stretched roofline drooping towards the large tailgate at the rear. Although no official prices have been given for the first EV estates, expect them from around £60,000. The star-studded motor has 142 individually illuminated chrome-look LED stars on the front grille. There are a further 158 on the estate model's panoramic roof, plus a star on the bonnet and boot, stars on each pair of headlights and rear-tail-lights, one on the steering wheel, and scores more small stars dotted around singly and in clusters inside and outside the car. Mercedes-Benz said: 'The all-new CLA Shooting Brake is the first electric Mercedes-Benz available as an estate. 'It combines the elegance, sportiness and intelligence of the CLA with plenty of space for passengers and luggage as well as a high degree of interior versatility. 'Whether it's a weekly shopping trip, a holiday with the whole family or a weekend trip with friends, it offers space for everything you need.' Here's five things you need to know about Mercedes' new stylish estate. 1. It has an enormous panoramic roof One of the highlights of the new CLA Shooting Brake is the vast panoramic roof which creates a generous and open feeling of space from the cabin to the stars above. To protect against solar radiation, the roof consists of heat-insulating laminated safety glass with a super-thin coating on the inside that in summer reflects infra-red rays to stop the interior heating up, and in winter reduces heat loss by reflecting the interior heat back into the cabin. This panoramic roof is available with a new optional function which can change the transparency of the glass in 10 to 20 milliseconds – less than the blink of an eye. From the dashboard controls, passengers can choose between transparent for a clear view upwards towards the sky, or a milky opaque if they want more privacy or improved glare protection from direct sunlight. But Mercedes-Benz says the 'icing on the cake' is that the large panoramic roof - for the first time connected to the car's ambient lighting system - can be illuminated in a chosen colour to create a starry sky with 158 individual stars integrated into its glass surface. The car firm said: 'The starry sky is almost invisible during the day. But in the dark, it surprises with a unique visual experience, especially for the rear passengers. 'It invites you to lean back and relax and also attracts attention from the outside. In combination with the new light signature at the front and rear, the illuminated glass roof gives the CLA Shooting Brake an unrivaled appearance.' 2. Space race The new CLA estate also promises more space and comfort than its predecessor including more headroom and easier access to the rear thanks to larger door cut-outs. Overall the all-new CLA Shooting Brake is 35mm longer (at 4,723mm) and 27 millimetres higher (at 1,469mm) than the predecessor model, while the wheelbase has increased by 61mm (to 2,790mm). The higher roofline means more headroom in each of the five seats – up 14mm in the front and 7mm in the rear-legroom has increased by 11mm in the front but reduced by 6mm in the rear. It also has 26mm more headroom in the second-row seats than its sibling new CLA saloon. There's also more storage space. Folding rear seats increases the boot volume from 455 litres to up to 1,290 litres. An illuminated front-trunk or 'frunk' under the bonnet adds another 101-litres of storage space. And an electric tailgate is standard. Mercedes-Benz says: 'Surfboards or bicycles fit easily on the roof thanks to the standard roof rails. Their load capacity is 75 kilograms. And a jet ski or two motorcycles can be easily transported on a trailer.' 3. It will exclusive be an EV... to begin with Two models of the new CLA Shooting Brake will be launched initially, both with 85kWh lithium-ion batteries. The CLA 250+ Shooting Brake with an output of 200 kW accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds, with a range of up to 472 miles (761 kilometres). The more powerful all-wheel drive 260-kW CLA 350 4MATIC Shooting Brake with two electric motors accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 5.0 seconds with a slightly shorter range of up to 453 miles (730 kilometres). Both cars benefit from a newly developed electric drive system and two speed gearbox on the rear axle which is designed for dynamic driving performance with high efficiency. First gear allows 'excellent acceleration right from the start' says Mercedes-Benz. Second gear is designed for power delivery at high speeds to boost range and comfort on long journeys. A new one-box braking system optimises the recovery of braking energy and helps increase the range. Almost all braking processes are carried out entirely by recuperation. From early next year, a petrol-electric hybrid version will be launched with 48-volt technology and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. At inner-city speeds and when less than 20kW is required, the hybrid models can be driven purely electrically. Electric coasting will be possible up to a speed of around 62mph and the engine will be able to recuperate energy in all eight gears. 4. Physical switches return with a 'Superscreen' A new multifunction steering wheel heralds the return of physical buttons in the form of roller and rocker switches and follows 'numerous customer requests.' There is a rocker switch for the limiter and a roller for volume control. 'Additionally, some functions have been removed from the control panel for better clarity and usability, making the finger navigation pad for controlling the driver display significantly larger and thus easier to operate.' An optional Superscreen extends across the entire width of the interior. This comprises a 26-centimetre (10.25-inch) screen for the driver and a 35.6-centimetre (14-inch) central display located behind glass, while a separate 35.6-centimetre (14-inch) screen is optionally available for the front passenger for individual entertainment. For in-car gaming, the gaming controller can be used with the passenger display while driving. With the central display, this is only possible when the vehicle is parked. 5. Say hi to AI The fourth generation of Mercedes-Benz User Experience – or 'MBUX' - infotainment system integrates artificial intelligence (AI) from Microsoft and Google. It combines knowledge gathered from the Internet based on ChatGPT4o and Microsoft Bing Search. It means the car's on-board Virtual Assistant 'can conduct complex, multi-part dialogues' and even has 'a short-term memory,' enabling it to continue a conversation at a later date. During an active dialogue, the Virtual Assistant 'even recognises emotions and can react accordingly, just like a good Friend,' says Mercedes-Benz. As a 'living avatar' in the form of the Mercedes-Benz star, it is always present on the centre display.

Sporting CP vs Celtic LIVE score and goal updates from pre season friendly in Portugal

The champions of Scotland and Portugal go head-to-head tonight as Celtic bring the curtain down on their pre-season tour in the Algarve. Brendan Rodgers' side have been grafting in the searing heat of Lisbon since Thursday, even taking time to visit the iconic Estadio Nacional - the site of the club's greatest ever triumph in 1967 - before heading south last night. Saturday's behind-closed-doors runout against Estrela da Amadora ended in a 3-2 defeat, but now Callum McGregor and Co. will step things up in front of a big crowd at the Estadio Algarve. New Bhoys Kieran Tierney, Benji Nygren and Hayato Inamura are set for more minutes as they continue to build match sharpness, while a number of academy prospects could also be handed another chance to impress. Meanwhile, Shin Yamada is poised to become Celtic's latest summer signing, with the Japanese striker saying his goodbyes to Kawasaki Frontale ahead of his move to Glasgow. Rodgers is likely to face fresh questions on transfer business after the game, having already made it clear that reinforcements are urgently needed before the Premiership curtain-raiser. Ryan McDonald Pre-season fixture schedule Celtic got their campaign off to a flyer last year with emphatic pre-season wins over Manchester City and Chelsea. There hasn't quite been the same pace and energy so far this summer, but at this stage, it's all about building fitness. The champions have four more games to go before next month's Premiership curtain-raiser at home to St Mirren. July 4 - Queen's Park 0-1 Celtic July 8 – Cork City 1-2 Celtic July 12 – Celtic 2-3 Estrela Da Amadora July 16 (KO: 7:30pm) – Sporting CP v Celtic July 19 (KO: 3pm) – Celtic v Newcastle United July 24 (KO: 7:30pm) – Celtic v Ajax July 26/27 (KO TBC) – Como or Al Ahli v Celtic Ryan McDonald Odds-on to return? Celtic have been alerted to the availability of former hero Odsonne Edouard. However, Brendan Rodgers would have to stump up serious cash to bring the Frenchman back to Parkhead. Edouard has been deemed surplus to requirements at Crystal Palace and has entered the final year of his contract. The Eagles are keen to offload the striker this summer and Edouard is now weighing up his options. It's believed the ex-PSG kid is picking up a weekly salary of £80,000 - and that's a huge hurdle for Celts. Ryan McDonald Need for speed Impatient Celtic fans have made their feelings clear on social media about the lack of transfer business in recent days. But the Hoops are edging closer to a £1.2million deal for Japan B international Shin Yamada. Kawasaki Frontale have confirmed the striker is set to join 'an overseas club,' with Yamada expected to team up with compatriots Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Hayato Inamura in Glasgow's east end. Will he be a direct replacement for Kyogo? That remains to be seen - but Brendan Rodgers will be grilled on the incoming signing after tonight's clash with Sporting Lisbon.
