JAKARTA, May 24 — Indonesia plans to announce economic stimulus measures on June 5 to revive activity and boost consumer purchasing power, hoping to push economic growth to around 5 per cent this quarter, the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Saturday.
'These programmes are prepared to encourage growth by increasing consumption,' chief economic minister Airlangga Hartarto said in a statement, adding that launching the measures before a school holiday starting in late June would provide momentum to boost purchasing power.
Southeast Asia's largest economy grew 4.87 per cent in the first quarter from the same period last year, its weakest in more than three years. The central bank trimmed its 2025 growth forecast to between 4.6 per cent and 5.4 per cent from a 4.7-5.5 per cent range.
The ministry is still calculating the size of the stimulus package, which is meant to boost growth in the second and third quarters, a spokesperson said.
The incentives include a 50 per cent discount on electricity bills for around 79.3 million households and food handouts for 18.3 million lower-income households in June and July.
The government also plans to give cash transfer for low-income workers and a discount on work accident insurance for workers in labour-intensive industries.
To boost tourism, the government said there will be discounts on airfare, train and sea transportation rates during the school holiday, which runs through mid-July, and discounts on highway tolls for 110 million users in June and July, the ministry said. — Reuters

Report: Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxis may hit Malaysia, Singapore roads in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Baidu is planning to launch its Apollo Go robotaxi operations in Malaysia and Singapore as early as this year, Bloomberg reported today. A person familiar with the matter said the move is part of the Chinese tech giant's broader push to extend its global footprint beyond China. They added discussions are ongoing with potential local partners to identify suitable business models for the two markets. 'We are looking at mobility service providers, local taxi companies and third-party fleet operators,' Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li has previously said, describing the company's preference for an 'asset-light approach'. The timing of Baidu's planned expansion coincides with growing momentum in the global autonomous vehicle race. Tesla is set to unveil its Cybercab robotaxi network within days, with CEO Elon Musk betting big on autonomous driving to fuel future growth. Baidu's Apollo Go is among a trio of Chinese robotaxi companies — alongside WeRide and — stepping up efforts to enter markets in the Middle East, Europe, and South-east Asia. The Apollo Go service has already made strides at home. It has deployed more than 1,000 autonomous vehicles worldwide, mostly in China, and notched 11 million rides as of the first quarter of 2025. That puts it ahead of US rival Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving unit, which reported 10 million paid rides as of May. Beyond South-east Asia, Baidu is also eyeing new frontiers in Europe and Turkey. It has been in talks with PostAuto, a subsidiary of Swiss Post, to introduce robotaxis in Switzerland. Baidu has yet to issue an official statement on its South-east Asia plans.

‘Create opportunities for local farmers': Anwar orders govt to stop using imported food at official events

PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today directed all government departments to cease using imported goods, particularly food, at official events, in a bid to promote local products. Speaking at the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar emphasised that using local produce will not only bolster the local economy but will also open wider opportunities for local farmers to market their goods. 'If every government department follows this directive, it will create more opportunities for our farmers to supply local food ingredients,' he said. The Prime Minister cited neighbouring countries as examples, noting their firm commitment to using local food products at all official functions. 'In Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, I've never been served imported food at any government-hosted official event. It's automatic for them to ensure only local food is served,' he remarked. Anwar also criticised the continued preference by some parties for imported food despite the government's clear stance. Calling the practice inconsistent with efforts to empower the local economy, he urged civil servants and officials to be more mindful of the need to support homegrown produce. — Bernama

Malaysia's trade hits RM252b in May, powered by E&E exports, says Miti

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Malaysia's trade increased by 2.6 per cent in May 2025 to reach RM252.48 billion, marking the 17th consecutive month of year-on-year growth since January 2024, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry. In a statement today, it said exports recorded a slight decrease of 1.1 per cent to RM126.62 billion, while imports grew 6.6 per cent to RM125.86 billion. Trade surplus for the month stood at RM766.3 million, maintaining a trade surplus for the 61st consecutive month since May 2020. The ministry noted that exports of electrical and electronics (E&E) products continued to show resilient performance, registering an increase of nearly RM4 billion — consistent with the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics forecast of an 11.2 per cent increase in global semiconductor sales in 2025. 'As a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain, Malaysia stands to benefit significantly from this anticipated expansion. 'Nevertheless, potential challenges remain, notably the uncertainties in global economic conditions. While the sector's outlook remains positive, proactive policy responses will be crucial to sustain this growth momentum,' it said. According to Miti, trade, exports and imports achieved their highest cumulative value on record for the January to May 2025 period, with trade growing 6.2 per cent to RM1.23 trillion compared to the corresponding period in 2024. Exports expanded 5.5 per cent to RM638.48 billion and imports rose 6.9 per cent to RM591.54 billion, while the trade surplus slipped 9.4 per cent to RM46.94 billion. The ministry noted that exports to key trading partners, including the United States and the European Union recorded robust growth, while exports to Taiwan not only expanded but also attained a new record high. 'Exports to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) partners, notably the United Kingdom and New Zealand also recorded increases, primarily due to higher shipments of palm oil-based manufactured products,' it added. — Bernama
