Angela Bassett plays the American President in 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.' For the Academy Award nominee, portraying strong, empowered women comes naturally. Whether it her role as Queen Ramonda in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', which earned her an Oscar nomination, or her latest stint as President Erica in 'MI', Bassett fearlessly chooses roles that are out of the box and powerful. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Angela spoke about the joy of playing an American President, working with Tom Cruise and her desire to visit India.Excerpts from the conversation:Angela did you know Indian designer JJ Valaya dressed you up in Black Panther?advertisementWow, no, I didn't know his name, but I knew some of my favourite gowns, especially the red one in the film was made by an Indian designer. I loved it and it was my absolute favourite.Do you find it empowering to play an American President who is a woman of color? Do you think it sets an example for young girls watching the film?
Oh, it's incredibly empowering. And I hope that they will get the message that they can be whoever they want, don't be reticent about imagining your life in any possible way. You know, you can do it. Nothing's impossible for you if you can dream it.What if Queen Ramonda from Black Panther had to cross over into 'Mission Impossible'? What do you think she would do?advertisementWell, Queen Ramonda was very concerned for her country's safety. And in 'Mission Impossible,' Erica (the President) is considering her country and the world - all of humanity at large. But I think they're both very strategic and like-minded and have the best interest of the people they love.Do you remember the first time you heard the iconic Mission Impossible title music?Oh, absolutely. You know, it's just a part of my musical memory. And that one is emblazoned in there. As soon as we hear it, it's like a match being struck and a fuse being set. And off we go.Did you learn anything new about Tom Cruise while making this movie?I don't think I found out anything that we don't know. I mean, we've witnessed his joy, his enthusiasm, his love for moviemaking, his fearlessness. His passion and dedication to his craft is unmatched. And that's just who he is through and through as an actor and a film maker.Have you watched any Indian movies, or do you have plans to visit India?Oh I would love to visit India the day I get the chance. I am absolutely excited at that idea. Is there a prop or a piece from the set that you would love to take back home from Mission Imposible ?advertisementYou know, in 'Wakanda,' I got to keep my beads, the ones that are so iconic with Queen Ramonda. They brought them out every morning and took it back every evening and were very tight with it. But on the last day of the shoot, the prop master gifted me those beads and I thought it was such a beautiful gift. Well, from the set of 'Mission Impossible' I would love to take the key. You know the one that is very important!'Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning' hits theatres across India on May 17.

We Were Liars Trailer: Emily Alyn Lind Seeks Truth In Bloody Mystery On Beechwood Island

Last Updated: In We Were Liars, Emily Alyn Lind returns to her family's island to uncover a bloody secret she can't remember. The secrets of Beechwood Island are beginning to surface. Prime Video dropped the trailer for We Were Liars, the highly anticipated adaptation of E. Lockhart's bestselling novel, and it teases a haunting tale of memory, love, and betrayal. Set against the backdrop of a seemingly perfect summer, the trailer introduces us to Cadence Sinclair (Emily Alyn Lind), the golden girl of the Sinclair family, who returns to her family's exclusive New England island retreat with no memory of the previous summer — and a desperate need to uncover what really happened. 'Some people call us American royalty," Cadence says in a voiceover as the trailer opens with scenic shots of beach bonfires and sailing. She reminisces about her tight-knit group of friends, dubbed 'the Liars": Mirren (Esther McGregor), Johnny (Joseph Zada), and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari). But the serene summer facade is soon shattered. 'We were happy, we wanted for nothing. But something terrible happened last summer. And I have no memory of what — or who — hurt me," she says. Returning to the island with dyed-black hair and emotional scars, Cadence hopes the familiar surroundings will spark her memory. Her mother (Caitlin FitzGerald) confides in her sister Carrie (Mamie Gummer), 'She's hoping that being here will jog her memory." As Cadence reconnects with the Liars — and the memory of her intense summer romance with Gat — buried secrets slowly unravel. She begins to question whether her closest friends are hiding something dark. 'I need to see if all the lies lead to me, on that beach, alone," she reflects. Hints of danger emerge, particularly around Johnny, whose mother warns him sternly, 'You cannot tell anyone, do you understand me?" With haunting imagery and suspenseful reveals, the trailer ends with Cadence's chilling words: 'Not every fable ends happily. Some stories have no hero at all. Sometimes, the castle crumbles." The limited series stars Emily Alyn Lind, Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse. Dhanashree Opens Up On Love After Divorce From Yuzvendra Chahal: 'Putting Others Down...'

Last Updated: Dhanashree and Yuzvendra Chahal filed for divorce by mutual consent in February this year, with a Mumbai court officially granting the divorce in March. Choreographer and digital creator Dhanashree Verma has broken her silence on life after her divorce from Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal. In a conversation with Times of India, Dhanashree opened up about dealing with misleading narratives, staying grounded, and whether she's open to finding love again. Addressing speculation surrounding her, Dhanashree said, 'The narratives circulating around me are far from the truth. None of it reflects who I am, and I don't engage with it because I know my values, my upbringing, and the kind of person I am. I've always believed in maintaining dignity and grace. Putting others down has never been my way, and it never helps anyone rise in life." Reflecting on whether love is on the cards again, Dhanashree shared that matters of the heart aren't planned. 'I've always been extremely focused on my goals, whether it was during my time as a dentist or now in the entertainment industry… Pyaar ki baat karein, toh you can't plan these things. Aap ye decide nahi kar sakte ke main aaj ya ek saal baad pyaar mein padhungi. Love is a different entity altogether. What matters most to me is mera focus aur main apne life mein aage kya dekh rahi hoon." Dhanashree and Yuzvendra Chahal filed for divorce by mutual consent in February this year, with a Mumbai court officially granting the divorce in March. However, the process saw a delay after the family court initially declined to waive the six-month mandatory cooling-off period. The former couple's separation had been speculated on for months, particularly after they unfollowed each other on Instagram. They tied the knot in December 2020 in an intimate ceremony in Gurugram and were reportedly living separately since June 2022. They first connected during the COVID-19 pandemic when Chahal approached Dhanashree for dance lessons. First Published: June 04, 2025, 04:15 IST
